The Sudbury Catholic District School Board was proud to welcome former NHL player and Indigenous speaker Jason Simon for a multi-school speaking tour from September 15 to 16, 2026.
Organized by the SCDSB Indigenous Education team, Simon’s interactive sessions reached students across four board schools, blending personal storytelling with vital conversations around personal growth, inclusion, and safety.

Drawing on his personal journey from childhood to professional sports, Simon challenged students to embrace perseverance and surround themselves with positive support systems.
“Sometimes against all odds, through resilience, determination and discipline, great things can happen. I can’t stress enough that it takes that personal belief and to surround yourself with people that believe in you and your dreams,” Simon noted during his visits. “My whole objective is trying to bring the students along in my story – from a young child to an adult and show them that life is not easy sometimes. By working through the hardships in life and getting past those hard times you build resilience and confidence and self-esteem – the more we learn the more we are dedicated to our mission.”
Reflecting on overcoming hardship and adversity, Simon shared his hope that his story inspires every student to break barriers, build resilience, and pursue healing and growth. He spoke passionately about a future where all young people thrive, while highlighting the importance of remaining deeply connected to one’s culture, community, and foundational values.

Indigenous Education Consultant Dawn Fielding highlighted the deeper purpose behind these visits, noting that as fourth-generation Residential School Survivors, both she and Simon ground their work in sharing truths that empower all students while carrying their history forward with strength.

Rowan’s Law Day

On Monday, September 28, 2026, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board will recognize Rowan’s Law Day, joining communities across Ontario in raising awareness about concussions and the importance of responding safely.
Check out the following information and resources to learn the signs of a concussion, speak up and know how to respond. Together, we can increase awareness and help protect the health and well-being of every student.
Rowan Stringer was 17 years old when she died from a condition known as second impact syndrome. While playing rugby, Rowan is believed to have experienced three concussions over six days. She didn’t know her brain needed time to heal. Neither did her parents, teachers or coaches.
Rowan’s Law and Rowan’s Law Day honour Rowan’s memory and aim to bring awareness to concussions and concussion safety. This year, Rowan’s Law Day falls on September 30, which is also the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Sudbury Catholic Schools will therefore recognize Rowan’s Law Day on Monday, September 28.
HIT: A concussion can result from a hit to the head, neck or body. It can affect how a person thinks, feels and acts. A person does not need to lose consciousness to have a concussion, and symptoms may not appear immediately.
STOP: If you think a student or athlete may have sustained a concussion, stop the activity immediately and seek help. Students with a suspected concussion should be assessed by a physician or nurse practitioner.
SIT: A student with a suspected concussion must sit out of sports and activities where another injury could occur. They should not return to physical activity that day and must follow the appropriate return-to-school and return-to-activity steps.
Signs and symptoms of a concussion can be physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioural or related to sleep. They may include:
Headache, dizziness or balance problems
Nausea or vomiting
Blurred or double vision
Sensitivity to light or sound
Difficulty concentrating or remembering
Confusion or appearing dazed
Irritability, sadness or unusual emotions
Changes in sleep or energy levels
If a student experiences severe or worsening symptoms, including loss of consciousness, repeated vomiting, seizures, increasing confusion, slurred speech, severe headache or neck pain, call 911 immediately.
Staff members, coaches and volunteers do not diagnose concussions. However, we all share a responsibility to recognize and report possible signs and symptoms, remove students safely from activities and ensure they receive appropriate medical attention. Following a concussion, students may require temporary adjustments and support as they gradually return to learning and physical activity. Open communication among the student, family, school and healthcare team is essential to supporting a safe recovery.

Sabrina will oversee student mental health initiatives, focusing on early intervention and accessible support for all students. In collaboration with School Mental Health Ontario and the board’s executive leadership team, Sabrina will direct the implementation of the Mental Health and Addictions Strategy and Action Plan.

Grounded in provincial standards and centered on Catholic values, the 2026–2031 MYSP focuses on four strategic pillars: Living Catholic Identity, Welcoming, Safe, and Inclusive Schools, Achievement & Future Pathways, and System Excellence. Over the next five years, these pillars will serve as a roadmap to guide classroom instruction, operational priorities, and community partnerships across all elementary and secondary schools.

The 2026–2031 strategic framework outlines key priorities across four core areas:
Living Catholic Identity: Nurturing Catholic identity as a daily, lived experience across all classrooms; strengthening student and staff faith formation anchored in equity and dignity; and deepening the Home-School-Parish triad through active parish partnerships.
Welcoming, Safe, and Inclusive Schools: Continuously strengthening student and staff well-being; ensuring consistent system-wide processes to address bullying, hate, bias, and discrimination; improving access to mental health and special education supports; and embedding Indigenous education and Truth and Reconciliation across all schools.
Achievement & Future Pathways: Closing achievement gaps in foundational literacy and numeracy; expanding hands-on, experiential learning opportunities including STEM and skilled trades; and preparing all students for post-secondary transitions through personalized pathway planning.
System Excellence: Building a culture of trust, transparency, and accountability; investing in professional growth and leadership development for staff; and modernizing operational systems, infrastructure, and technical resources.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board (SCDSB) is excited to announce that Lisa Lamoureux has been appointed as the new Superintendent of Education, effective Monday, August 31, 2026.
Lisa brings more than 28 years of experience serving in Ontario’s education system, having held a wide range of roles throughout her career. Career milestones include positions as an Educational Assistant, classroom teacher, school principal, Acting Superintendent of Education, OPC Provincial President, and System Principal with the Near North District School Board. Each of these roles has provided Lisa with a comprehensive and grounded perspective on senior leadership, supported by a diverse portfolio focused on student achievement and well-being. Her leadership experience encompasses special education services, equity, Indigenous education, student mental health, and French as a second language (FSL). She is also deeply passionate about mentorship and developing others, believing firmly in supporting and empowering educators and leaders as they grow in their careers.
Beyond her professional work, Lisa has strong personal connections to the Sudbury area, as her father grew up in Chelmsford and she continues to have many family members in the region. Outside of work, Lisa is the proud mother of five children. Family is very important to her, and she enjoys spending time with them at their family’s cottage in Kipawa, Quebec.
