Sudbury Catholic Students Excel at Regional Science Fair

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is very proud of the many students who participated in the Regional Science Fair at Laurentian University on March 28-29. The projects were extremely well done and demonstrated creativity, innovation and quality work. The Board would thank the staff for their support and for inspiring students to become involved in this excellent learning opportunity. “Sudbury Catholic schools were well represented and we are very proud of our students,” stated Director of Education, Joanne Bénard. “Congratulations to all of our participants. Please extend our congrats to students and staff for these wonderful accomplishments.”

St. John’s Wins Nesbitt Cup

St. John Catholic Elementary School’s Co-ed Hockey team wins gold for the second year in a row at the Nesbitt Cup. The St. John Jaguars played in the finals againstt Algonquin Public School winning 4-1. Their coaches are extremely proud of their team’s positive attitude and hard work. All players represented St. John School and the Catholic District School Board with integrity and respect. Many thanks go out to the very dedicated coaching staff, parents, and students. Way to go Jags!!

Finding Momo at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School

The students at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School were very excited to have Momo, the main character of the New York Times best-selling book, ‘Finding Momo’ visit the school. Momo is a black and white border collie who’s owner, Andrew Knapp, has driven across Canada photograhing Momo to create a canine version of the beloved picture book ‘Where’s Waldo’. Students were able to ask the author/owner, Andrew Knapp, questions of how the idea of the book came to be and many questions about Momo. The FDK students were very thrilled to take a picture with Momo. Can you find him?

St. David School Promotes Healthy Life Choices with “The Big Crunch”

The students and staff at St. David Catholic School participated in a special day of “good food education, ending in a massive, synchronized bite into a crunchy apple”. The school prepared for this special day playing student created public service announcements celebrating the benefits of choosing locally grown foods and eating healthy. St. David School works throughout the year to promote healthy eating habits, the benefits of daily physical activity and positive self esteem. “It was a fun activity to support positive lifestyle choices. The students enjoyed the fresh apple and especially enjoyed that this learning experience was done as a school community”, said Ms. Cimino, St. David School Grade 1 teacher.

St. David School welcomes the Indigenous duo, Waaban

Mrs. Fielding and her St. David School Native Language students gathered together to welcome the Indigenous duo Waaban, which means “first break of light in the morning” in Anishnaabemowin. Nathalie Restoule (former Miss Wikwemikong and Anishinabek Nation Youth Representative) and Jordan Mowat first shared their gift of song and drumming with a concert for the students. Then they shared their struggles growing up with bullying in schools. They passed on advice on how they overcame their struggles by the power of resilience and having pride in their culture. After the young role models delivered their motivational speeches, they “broke bannock” with the inspired students during the Native Language Feast in honour of Nathalie and Jordan’s classroom visit.

Alpine ski coach Dan Bartolucci honoured

Dan Bartolucci has been coaching Alpine Skiing for 14 years at Marymount Academy and OFSAA recognized his contributions to this sport by honouring him with the “OFSAA LEADERSHIP IN SCHOOL SPORT AWARD” at the banquet on February 23rd.

The OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award is presented annually at each OFSAA Championship to a teacher-coach who has made a significant contribution to the educational athletic program. The recipient of this award exemplifies the values of fair play and good sportsmanship, while promoting enjoyment, personal growth and educational achievement through school sport.

Dan has coached his Alpine Skiing team to many city and NOSSA championships and has sent skiers to OFSAA for the past 6 years. His dedication, not only to Alpine Skiing but to Soccer, Badminton, and Flag Football make him an exemplary coach and leader. Congratulations Dan on this well deserved recognition! We are extremely proud of you!
