Holy Cross Students Brainstorm How to Lift Their Spirits for Bell Let’s Talk Day!

For Bell Let’s Talk day, Holy Cross students from Madame Riutta’s class hold up their class mind map of ideas for staying positive and hopeful!

This week, lots of students have been brainstorming new and creative ways to lift themselves up when stuck in a negative rut. In addition to these wonderful mind maps, students have also made posters, videos and morning announcements on the topic! The idea is based on the book “How to Get Unstuck from the Negative Muck” by Lake Sullivan.

Stay tuned to CTV Northern News tonight as the teacher Mr. Clapperton and student Lia Gallo will be featured in story about Bell Let’s Talk day!

BUS TRANSPORTATION CANCELLED – AM ONLY

TRANSPORTATION CANCELLED MORNING ONLY, SCHOOLS REMAIN OPEN – SUDBURY, ESPANOLA, MASSEY AND MANITOULIN DISTRICTS

BUSSES WILL BE DOING THEIR AFTERNOON RUNS ONLY

Due to the extreme cold and in the interest of safety, all school related transportation services for English Catholic, English public, French Catholic and French public schools, operating in the districts of SUDBURY, ESPANOLA, MASSEY AND MANITOULIN, (this includes all areas such as St-Charles, Noëlville, Monetville, Markstay, Hagar, Warren, Wahnapitae, Coniston, Killarney, Whitefish, Whitefish River First Nations, Manitoulin Island, Onaping, Chelmsford, Capreol, Valley East, Garson, Chelmsford and Azilda) are cancelled this morning. All schools will remain open, however, only afternoon transportation will be running.

Parents who transport their children to school are reminded that buses will pick them up at the end of the school day.
Also, we remind parents to verify the website for ALL DAY cancellations due to school bus drivers’ absences.

All staff is expected to report to work.

SCDSB Students Participate in Virtual Quiz Show!

Over 650 students from grades 4-6 participated in a special Brain Buster Quiz Show organized by Let’s Talk Science solely for Sudbury Catholic students.

Students tested their knowledge about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in a fun and engaging activity.

During the 45 minute session, multi choice questions in a variety of categories such as careers, inventions, public, multidisciplinary, sprint and general were selected. Students learned new vocabulary such as crepuscular, felidae, canidae, mustelidae and so much more all while having fun!

Students were also given the opportunity to ask questions to special guests Gaëlle and Nick about their experiences studying in STEM. Both university graduates, Gaëlle studied engineering while Nick studied physics. Both educators have a passion for teaching and sharing their knowledge about STEM to students across the country.

We would like to thank the team at Let’s Talk Science for organizing this event for our students.

Join us with your class for fun and interactive STEM activities starting on January 27th! Each week features a different hands-on activity using minimal, easy-to-find materials. Students will also have the chance to learn from and ask questions to inspiring STEM role models. Let’s Talk Science Challenge (Grades 6-8)

The Let’s Talk Science Challenge is a competition that takes place each year for students in Grade 6-8 across Canada. It includes a question and answer competition and an engineering challenge.

Preparation for the competition is important. Students will work in teams or individually to learn STEM concepts provided in a handbook prior to the competition. There will also be practice quizzes and design and build challenges available weekly throughout the Play & Learn weekly activities portion.

STEM Storytime – Washing Your Hands

Students at Sudbury Catholic Schools joined the Let’s Talk Science Team for STEM Storytime yesterday afternoon.

Students listened to Helen Patuck’s book, “My Hero Is You” read by Angelica, a graduate student at University of Guelph in the Plant Agriculture program.

Then together with our students, she completed a hands-on science activity about the importance of soap and washing your hands!

Students used water, black pepper and soap to learn about germs, how they spread and the importance of washing our hands as an effective way to prevent the spread of infections.

Register now for weekly STEM Storytime series on Tuesdays at 1pm. Each week a Let’s Talk Science Outreach student will read a storybook followed by a hands-on activity.

If teachers cannot make it to a live session, they can register and will be sent a link to the recording afterwards.

Also, for each week that a class participates in a STEM Storytime live event, they will receive an entry in Let’s Talk Science’s monthly draw for a $50 gift card to buy books for your classroom!

Bishop Alexander Carter Students Advance to Championship Rounds in the Skills Ontario’s Junk Drawer Races!

Grades 2-12 students across the province were invited to participate in the first-ever Skills Ontario’s Junk Drawer Races! In this program, students had fun while exploring various challenges to build their skills and explore different pathways.

This morning the winners of the Regional round of the competition were announced on Skills Ontario’s YouTube channel.

We are excited to report that a team of BAC grade 7 students placed 2nd in the Air Glider Challenge and three teams of BAC grade 8 students placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the hydraulic crane challenge.

These teams will be competing in the Provincial Championship round and will have until February 16th to review their existing blueprints, potentially modify their designs to meet the provincial challenge and construction requirements while explaining their modifications and submit their new submissions. Provincial Submissions will be evaluated by industry volunteers, and the top three teams will be awarded prizes by Skills Ontario. Winning teams will be notified by March 10th .

We wish our students the best of luck and thank Skills Ontario, industry partners, the Government of Ontario and Bombardier for giving our students a unique experiential learning opportunity.

What Is Family Literacy Day?

Family Literacy Day takes place every January 27^th to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Since 1999, thousands of schools, libraries, literacy organizations and other community groups have taken part in the initiative. ABC creates free learning and promotional resources for anyone that wants to get involved. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.

Virtual Story Time with Howard Binkow

GRADE: K-Grades 3

Howard Binkow, from Sarasota Florida, is the author of the Howard B. Wigglebottom series. Mr. Binkow will launch our celebration with a read aloud and give Sudbury Catholic students a question and answer period.

Learn to Make Play Dough

Grade: K-Grades 6

WHEN: JAN. 27TH AT 1:00 PM-1:30 PM

Teachers are encouraged to have students join this live session where together they will learn how to make Play Dough with flour, salt, water and food colouring. Teachers can extend the activity into another art lesson and/or invite families to join Barbara Reid’s live demonstration later in the day.

Celebrate Family Literacy Day 2022 with Honorary Chair Barbara Reid

GRADES: K-Grades 6

WHEN: JAN. 27TH AT 4:30PM

Barbara Reid will be doing a demonstration on how to use clay/play dough to create a picture. She will share unique techniques that students can use to make different things. The event will end with a Q&A.
