Saying Goodbye at St. Andrew

St. Andrew School staff and students said good bye to Mrs. Lesia Sawkiw (resource teacher) and Mrs. Melody Henry (principal) on Wednesday June 24th. A beautiful farewell prayer service was led by all the teaching staff. The two retirees were gifted with roses, homemade cards and a beautiful painting that incorporated a thumbprint of each student from the school. Pictured are Rachel Walker, Mrs. Sawkiw, Mrs. Henry and Joe Gouchie.

Holy Trinity Hosts Welcome to Kindergarten Event

Holy Trinity Catholic School isn’t set to open its doors and welcome students until September 2015; however, this didn’t stop the newest members of the Holy Trinity school community from gathering for the Welcome to Kindergarten Orientation session. Parents are a child’s first and best teacher and learning about how to play and discover with your child in order to support them as they begin school is a special opportunity. The Welcome to Kinderdarten Orientation event allows parents/caregivers to attend workshops at their neighbourhood school where they receive early learning resources from The Learning Partnership and learn the strategies and rationale for using the resources with their child. Pre-school children, registered to begin their educational journey in the fall, and their families participated in an evening of literacy / numeracy early learning activities organized by the school staff and community partners, including the Sudbury & District Health Unit; Best Start Hubs New Sudbury; the Greater Sudbury Public Library; Teddy Bear Daycare; Optometrist, J. Levesque; and,  Speech Language Pathologist, N. Keating. Aila Lepage, whose son will be starting Full Day Kindergarten in French Immersion at Holy Trinity in in the fall said that “It was very informative for us. We are looking forward to the start of Brody’s school career…he is in great hands!”

Joining Together As One

Students from St. Andrew, St. Bernadette and St. St. Raphael Catholic Elementary Schools came together in prayer to celebrate Catholic Youth Day at St. Andrew the Apostle Church.
The three schools will form Holy Trinity Catholic School in the fall. This is the first time all three student bodies came together in the church to celebrate the Eucharist. Students at all three schools helped in the mass presenting the readings, altar serving and forming a choir. Father Sam D’Angelo presided over the mass.

Faith Based Play Day at St. Andrew

St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School celebrated Catholic Education week with a Faith Based Play Day. Each classroom teacher and the Core French teacher lead the teams of children in faith based activities. There was singing, creating a story, forgiveness melts a frozen heart activity , love letters, the parable of the Good Samaratin and discussion of the miracles of Jesus. Pictured is the group who explored “what joy means to me.” Thank you to each teacher who planned, organized and led each team in an activity.

Holy Trinity Families Unite through Exercise

It was all in the name of building new friendships for the future students of Holy Trinity Catholic School in an active and healthy way!
Families of children who currently attend St. Andrew, St. Bernadette and St. Raphael Catholic Elementary Schools came together in the gymnasium at St. Charles College on April 16th, 2015 to participate in a fun-filled evening of Zumba and Yoga. Many parents and teachers enthusiastically took to the gymnasium floor and the gym mats to participate in the exercises!
The night was made possible through the funding of a Ministry of Education Parents Reaching Out grant focused on increasing parental engagement in education.
As gracious hosts, the St. Bernadette School families collected items to create gift baskets with themes like “cooking with family”, “a family indoor movie night” and “outdoor family activities”. Sudbury & District Health Unit Public Health Nurses, Stacey Gilbeau and KC Rautiainen, also joined in the amusements and helped out by drawing the winners of the three baskets at the end of the evening.

St. Andrew Open House Celebrates Memories

St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School hosted a Come and Go Open House on Sunday April 19th from noon to 2pm. The principal and the classroom teachers welcomed many former students, teachers and parents to the school to walk the halls and share memories. They learned that at one time St. Andrew School was St. Conrad school and subjects were taught in both of our national languages. There were many memories shared about former teachers and principals and activities that happened in this little community school. Many of the visitors were interested in viewing the architect’s rendering of the new Holy Trinity School. Pictured is Mrs. Henry, the present principal, with Brittany and Brandon Schroeder two former students. Mrs. Henry remembers when she was taller than both of these students!

Sudbury Catholic Schools – Running for Terry

Sudbury Catholic Schools are extremely proud of their history with the Terry Fox Foundation. Over the last eleven years, several of the board’s schools, including St. Andrew, St. James, St. John, St. Paul and St. Raphael Catholic Elementary Schools have taken part in the annual Terry Fox run collectively raising almost $60,000. The Sudbury Catholic schools are part of more than 4,000 schools across Canada taking part – raising $6.8 million dollars for cancer research. On Wednesday, September 30, 2015, SCDSB schools will again take part in the annual Terry Fox run with this year’s run commemorating the 35 anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. “We are very fortunate to have extremely dedicated and engaging staff,” stated Joanne Bénard, Director of Education for the Board. “We recognize as a board the powerful and positive impact that the Terry Fox Foundation and the Marathon of Hope represent, and we are proud of the past efforts of our students and staff collectively supporting this important cause. We will continue to support this national school run with our school communities.”
