On September 30, we will join schools across Canada to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Students and staff are encouraged to wear orange and participate in Orange Shirt Day events to recognize and raise awareness about the history and legacies of the residential school system in Canada. We are reminded that Orange Shirt Day also offers an opportunity to honour and pray for those who never made it home.

TRUTH. RESILIENCY. HOPE Event @ Bell Park 

In recognition of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, the Urban Indigenous Sacred Circle and Shkagamik-Kwe Health Centre is holding the TRUTH RESILIENCY HOPE event. Join the Circle on September 30, 2026, at Bell Park, with opening remarks at 10 a.m. and a day of sharing to honour the children and families harmed by residential Indian Day Schools, and Sixties Scoop survivors.

Honouring Truth and Reconciliation in Our Schools:

Across Sudbury Catholic, our school communities are actively engaging in meaningful learning and action. Examples of local initiatives demonstrating our commitment to the TRC include: 

• Inspiring Guest Speakers: Hosting motivational visits and talks by former Indigenous NHL player Jason Simon. 
• Land-Based Learning: Participating in guided nature walks across beautiful traditional lands. 
• Cultural Practices & Prayer: Incorporating smudging as prayer for students and staff as they enter our schools. 
• Intergenerational Wisdom: Visiting with and listening to the words of wisdom shared by Elders. 
• Visual Remembrance: Creating reflective visual displays, symbols, and artwork throughout our buildings. 
• Community Engagement: Joining the Minaadendaandaa Aadziiwninaa (Respect Each Other’s Way of Life, Respect One Another) event sponsored by Shkagamik-Kwe at Bell Park.

Along with the activities listed on this page, schools may be engaging in additional ways to observe and honour this time. These events and activities may differ, but support is always provided.
