Literacy and STEM night was hit at Pius XII School with many community partners in attendance. Families enjoyed the Let’s Talk Science activities put on by Cambrian College, face painting, scholastic book fair, fishpond, upcycle club, art station and much more! The school planned a memorable night as families focused on the importance of literacy while reading at home as well completed STEM activities and learned about the opportunities they have for careers in the near future!
PEACE program students were proud to be able to help Caruso Club – Società Caruso members celebrate their membership banquet on March 25th. Students personalized over 400 wooden spoons!
PEACE Pens has completed orders for many organizations including Workforce Planning Sudbury and Manitoulin, Old Rock Café, Lake City Reality, Caruso Club, Tony V’s, the Art Gallery of Sudbury, and Dominion Sewing Centre. The program provides students with hands-on learning opportunities using a variety of design technologies and business planning experience. All pens and other products in the PEACE shop are custom-made and created from start to finish by students in the program. Each item has its own unique style reflective of the creator. The project allow students to earn credits through the workshop co-op. Through the initiative, students develop their computer skills, design skills, business skills all in a safe and healthy work environment.
“Working on these projects lets me focus on doing hands on activities outside of my schoolwork. It has been really fun to create things like the spoons for the Caruso Club,” said student Pierce Langill.
“Learning how to properly and safely use the engraver has been a great experience. I really enjoy learning about the process of creating products and how to successfully run a business such as this one,” said student Emma Flear.
“The team at St. Albert Learning Centre is always looking for innovative ways to promote experiential learning opportunities and to expand our partnership with community partners. We thank our community partners for giving our students the various projects to keep them engaged in their learning!” said Christina Raso, Vice Principal of St. Albert Learning Centre.

What a wonderful day for St Charles College students and staff as they celebrated the various cultures and diversity at the school by hosting their annual International Dessert Fair.
There were over 40 student booths with a variety of countries being represented. Students travelled to Nigeria, Italy, Greece, Ukraine, Mexico, France, Canada, Brazil, China, Japan, Lebanon, Norway, Philippines, Honduras, Austria, Korea, Spain, Chile, Zimbabwe, Bahamas, South Africa, Germany, Tibet, India & Israel, and go to enjoy bite sized desserts from each country. School Principal Mr. Aaron Barry was blown away by the various desserts and booths, after spending the afternoon conversing with many students and learning about their culture & foods, he said he has definitely added a few places to travel on his bucket list.
The event was a huge hit raising funds for the Northern Cancer Foundation. The event was planned by the schools’ international clubs, student council, foods classes and the amazing teaching staff involved.
St. Charles College students Parker Tilbury, Kyle Nyereyemhuka and Brady VanDruenen all placed first in the Skills Ontario Qualifying Competition held at Canadore College on April 1, 2023.
Parker took home gold in the Individual Carpentry competition while Kyle and Brady wrote, filmed, and produced an innovating short film on climate change which earned them the gold medal in the TV/Video Production category.
“There were some requirements before heading to Canadore. We had to do a storyboard, a production brief, and a script. We came prepared, were dead set to win and we really wanted to move onto Toronto. Overall, we’re really proud of our efforts” said Brady VanDruenen, St. Charles College Student.
“After two years of virtual competitions, it feels good to compete in person! We’re excited to meet the other students involved and excel at the Provincial level next month,” said Kyle Nyereyemhuka, St. Charles College Student.
Teacher mentors Chris Kohut (Construction SHSM Teacher) and Christina Thompson (Digital Media SHSM Teacher) are very proud and excited to see their students compete at the next stage.
“It was great watching Parker apply his skills and knowledge throughout the competition. Winning the gold in North Bay has made him even more focused on his goal to reach the podium in Toronto, and after that, maybe even the National competition. We’re very proud of his efforts so far and can’t wait to see what he accomplishes!” said Chris Kohut, Construction SHSM Teacher at St. Charles College.
The students will next compete against the best in Ontario at the upcoming Skills Ontario Provincial Competitions. A total of 13 secondary students from St. Charles College and 2 students from Bishop Alexander Carter C.S.S will represent the Sudbury Catholic District School Board at the Toronto Congress Centre from May 1 –
3, 2023. Contests will include Carpentry, TV/Video Production, Graphic Design, Auto Service Technology and Photography. Participating students will have an opportunity to win medals, be awarded with scholarships and bursaries, and qualify for the National Skills Competition in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Both Victoria Leigh and Maggie Polischuk will be moving on to the Canada Wide Science Fair which will take place in May 2023 in Edmonton.
“Everyone who participated put in so much effort towards the Regional Fair – winning these awards at the fair was so unexpected. Receiving an invitation to attend the national fair is very exciting and I am looking forward to attending,” said Victoria Leigh.
“For me it was more fun than work because I picked a topic that I enjoyed learning about. Meeting people that have the same interests as me has been amazing. I look forward to representing my school and the Board at the Canada wide Science Fair next month!” Maggie Polischuk.
In addition, St. Benedict C.S.S Science teacher Loretta Cuda received the Ambassador of Science Award. This award is given to someone who has contributed to science programming over the years by facilitating and encouraging teachers and students to participate in project-based learning opportunities, including annual science fairs.
“It is an honour to have been presented the Sudbury Regional Science Fair Ambassador of Science Award. I have been a member of the Sudbury Regional Science Fair for ten years as the Activities Chair and also a member of Teacher Resources. I have had the opportunity to attend four Canada Wide Science Fairs, which has taught me the importance of inquiry-based learning; something that I always implement into my classroom. I am a firm believer in allowing students to engage directly in their learning and explore the answers to their scientific inquiries through hands-on opportunities,” said Loretta Cuda.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board community is thrilled to celebrate the success of Bishop Alexander Carter and their talented students, Julia Parenteau, Madison Coutu, and Jade Prentice, for their exceptional artwork featured at the Emergence Exhibition held at the Art Gallery of Sudbury on March 30th, 2023.
The event was a tribute to the artistic talent of Sudbury’s young people and was a night filled with awe-inspiring local art, artists, and supporters. As part of the celebration, an awards ceremony recognized five outstanding artists, including two Bishop Alexander Carter students.
Jade Prentice was honoured by the Elizabeth Holmes & North Forte Studio for her print, “The Owl Prince,” while Madison Coutu received recognition from the Walden Art Club for her oil painting, “Dinner for One.” This achievement made Bishop Alexander Carter the only school to receive two awards at the event.
Stephanie Venturi, the Principal of Bishop Alexander Carter, expressed her pride in her talented students. “The exhibition showcased 50 pieces created by secondary students from all four school boards in the Sudbury Region, so it is an immense honour for Bishop to be the only school to receive two awards on this special occasion. We couldn’t be prouder of our talented Bishop artists who submitted their works to this incredible exhibition. We also want to thank our secondary art teacher, Ms. Pardoe, for her mentorship and guidance in helping these young artists achieve their creative dreams.”
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board would like to congratulate all secondary student artists and educators whose artwork was submitted for consideration to this stunning show.
The Emergence Exhibition is available for public viewing until May 7th. Everyone is encouraged to visit the Art Gallery of Sudbury to witness the impressive collection of artwork created by young artists in the Sudbury region.
As an Earth month initiative, Adele Reynolds from Let’s Talk Science, and Sudbury Catholic Schools enjoyed a great collaborative partnership this past week as we explored the wonderful free programming and resources offered by Let’s Talk Science. Approximately 50 educators participated in Lunch & Learn sessions in our four Grade 7-12 schools. Let’s Talk Science provided tasty lunches, offered fabulous prizes and distributed great resources.
Holy Trinity Redbird Alice (Grade 3) is making headlines as CTV News Northern Ontario’s Weather Star! The eight-year-old will be joining local weather specialist Katie Behun on Thursday, March 30th, 2023 at 5:00 pm for her debut appearance.
As part of her Weather Star experience, Alice will receive the VIP treatment, including a behind-the-scenes tour of the TV station, a swag bag, and a video feature profile shown on the news. She will also appear live on camera during the newscast.
Alice is thrilled for this amazing opportunity and is excited to share her passion for weather with Northern Ontario. Her fellow Redbirds and the Sudbury Catholic School community are proud of her accomplishments and wish her the best of luck in her Weather Star debut.

Secondary student, Emily Levesque from St. Benedict CSS, has recently signed a commitment letter to join the Cambrian College soccer team, the Cambrian Golden Shield. This announcement was greeted with enthusiasm by Head Coach Evan Philips, who personally came to St. Benedict to welcome Emily to the team.
According to Coach Philips, Emily has already started training with the team during the winter months. He expressed excitement about working with Emily over the summer to further develop her skills.
