For Bell Let’s Talk day, Holy Cross students from Madame Riutta’s class hold up their class mind map of ideas for staying positive and hopeful!
This week, lots of students have been brainstorming new and creative ways to lift themselves up when stuck in a negative rut. In addition to these wonderful mind maps, students have also made posters, videos and morning announcements on the topic! The idea is based on the book “How to Get Unstuck from the Negative Muck” by Lake Sullivan.

Sudbury Catholic Schools is pleased to celebrate Family Literacy Day with ABC Life Literacy Canada’s National Family!
What Is Family Literacy Day?
Family Literacy Day takes place every January 27th to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Since 1999, thousands of schools, libraries, literacy organizations and other community groups have taken part in the initiative. ABC creates free learning and promotional resources for anyone that wants to get involved. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.
Howard Binkow, from Sarasota Florida, is the author of the Howard B. Wigglebottom series. Mr. Binkow will launch our celebration with a read aloud and give Sudbury Catholic students a question and answer period.
Teachers are encouraged to have students join this live session where together they will learn how to make PlayDough with flour, salt, water and food colouring. Teachers can extend the activity into another art lesson and/or invite families to join Barbara Reid’s live demonstration later in the day.

Students and their families from St. David Catholic Elementary School were invited to join Skills Ontario’s Winterfest Celebration. Last night, families had a fun evening of learning how to make Hot Chocolate Balls led by Skills Ontario expert and Summer Camp Program Manager Kayla Bezarie.
Families learned the technique of tempering chocolate while trying out the skills of a Patisserie or Pastry Chef.
Students also learned the virtue of patience and the rule that if at first you don’t succeed, try again!
A parent, Amanda Tyson said, “We enjoyed making the hot chocolate bombs! Although we need some more practice, we still had fun!”
“Oh what fun we had tonight with this project. Thanks to Skills Ontario Winterfest for a new challenge. We had some failures but managed to complete 6. Look forward to trying more during the holidays.”stated Taryn Gorrie, another parent.
We live in a world surrounded by technology. We know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increase depending on their understanding of how technology works.
That’s why once again this year, students at Sudbury Catholic Schools joined in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 6-12th 2021).
We would like to thank Professor and Program Coordinator of Game Design at Cambrian College Aaron Langille, who presented two informative and engaging sessions about Coding and Gaming to our students. In addition, thanks goes out to all of our amazing teachers, parents & volunteers! With their help, our students joined students around the world and participated in Hour of Code activities or tutorials 20 MILLION times this month!
To commemorate the event, Sudbury Catholic teachers and students that participated in an Hour of Code were entered into a draw to win a classroom prize pack! Congratulations goes out to: Martine Shydlowsky and her grade 6 French Immersion class! Prizes will be distributed in January!

November 1-7 is Treaties Recognition Week, an important time of year where Ontario students acknowledge and learn about treaties as well as the histories, perspectives, and contributions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples.
The best way for students to discover Indigenous peoples and treaties is to meet with community leaders and listen to their first-hand perspectives. Students must be exposed to Indigenous history and perspectives, and we must take advantage of local resources whenever possible. This week, several resources and events are available for SCDSB students, staff, and the community to take advantage of.

Description: Alongside Dominic Beaudry, an Anishinaabe Language & Cultural Facilitator, Science North is hosting an online session that will look at the innovations that Indigenous people have adapted throughout history and are continuing to do so daily. Students will have a chance to explore how the Ojibwe used STEM to construct canoes, Wampum Belts as hypertext (HTML) and how Ojibwe students are taking the robotics world by storm.
Tree of Hope: Tree Lighting Ceremony
When: Sunday, Nov. 14th starting at 6pm
Description: Police services across the province light trees in honour of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. This year’s event will occur at 190 Brady St. (Greater Sudbury Police Service) and include drumming, smudging, guest speakers, and more. For more details, refer to the attached poster.
Treaties Recognition Week was introduced in 2016 to honour the importance of treaties and help students and residents of Ontario learn more about treaty rights, treaty relationships, and their relevance today.
The Ministry of Education works with the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs every year to support and amplify its annual public awareness campaign to increase knowledge and understanding of treaties and treaty relationships. This campaign includes resources that teachers in the classroom can use to plan activities about treaties.
Last week, a call out was made to all grades 2-6 at St Anne students to see if they were interested in participating in the first-ever Skills Ontario’s Junk Drawer Races! Over 100 students attended the first planning meeting. Due to the overwhelming response, the school has organized their own tournament with local winners advancing to the regional competition.
Each challenge nicely aligns with the grade specific science curriculum expectations. This is an excellent opportunity to integrate the curriculum while giving our students fun and engaging hands-on learning experiences.

We are hoping to have representation from each of our schools and will provide a small budget for the extras that might be required for our students to participate. In addition, Dan and myself will be available to present the challenges with the specific details to individual classes or to a group of classes via Zoom.
