This Christmas season the Pius XII School community is pleased to once again be participating in the “Fill A Crib” campaign to support the Infant Food Bank in Sudbury and our community’s most vulnerable: babies and toddlers. There is a crib located in the front lobby of our school where new and gently used items can be donated and used to help over 800 families in need in our community. The Pius XII community has already filled the crib with over 200 items. Well done, Penguins!

St. Charles School in Chelmsford Hosts a ‘CEREALsly’ Entertaining Fundraiser For the Friendship House Food Bank
To spread kindness this past Fall, staff and students at St. Charles Catholic School in Chelmsford collected 245 boxes of cereal to help feed the community through the Friendship House Food Bank.
Students collected boxes of cereal throughout the community for two weeks. On November 18, 2022, the school celebrated their efforts by creating a giant row of dominos and visually demonstrating how one small act of kindness can cause a ripple effect.
Melodie Winn, Grade 2/3 French Immersion Teacher at St. Charles School hopes to complete this fundraiser each year!
“At St. Charles, we are always looking for ways to help our community. Giving students an opportunity to see how a small act of kindness can make a big difference for others is always rewarding as a teacher. It was very exciting to watch as the boxes toppled over, and the students cheered with excitement, all while understanding that there is a greater cause behind it,” she said.
“Melodie Winn’s idea that one small act can create a massive positive impact for our community has provided our students with a wonderful opportunity to help create social justice for all,” said Angela Polischuk, Principal at St. Charles School.
“We enjoyed helping people that don’t have as much food. It was cool to watch the cereal boxes fall!” said Ashton Willoughby, Grade 3 at St. Charles School.
To take their message of kindness one step further, St. Charles Rams are asking schools within our community to complete their own cereal box domino chains in support of local Food Banks.
Local Indigenous Artist Visits St. Anne School
Jessica Somers, Indigenous visual artist from Focal Point Artistry facilitated a full day of learning about wampum belt with students in honour of Treaty Recognition Week. Along with the support from Ms. Carissa, the Indigenous Support Worker, students had the opportunity to learn about the history and significance of the wampum belt and paint their own wampum stories on a canvas. Jessica ended the day by leading the students through a smudging ceremony and a closing drumming song.

On September 25th, 2022, Sudbury Catholic Schools celebrated Franco-Ontarian Day! This celebration is an annual opportunity to learn about Franco-Ontarian culture and history in real life and bring awareness to this wonderful community on an occasion that combines education, fun, language, and history. As the number of FSL students and families continues to grow, it is important for Sudbury Catholic to infuse French Culture into the classrooms.
In our video that highlights our Franco-Ontarian celebrations, we use the phrase, “Ma Francophonie, j’y tiens!”, which translated from French means, “We are proud of our Francophone heritage!”
In addition to annual celebrations, FSL teaching and learning is being further supported in our community through our FSL Plan. One of the most important goals of Sudbury Catholic School’s three-year FSL Plan is improving student confidence and proficiency. We’re committed to providing french language learners with the support they need, and to continue to offer programming that is evidence-based and engaging.
“With what we currently know about how kids learn to read, our Board has committed to shifting from a balanced to a structured literacy approach. Structured literacy provides explicit instruction of the key components of literacy so that students develop excellent pre-reading and reading skills. This approach also guarantees early identification of students at-risk through assessment. The best interventions can then be used to support and move students along. With purposeful reading instruction and interventions, students will demonstrate increased achievement in the FSL program. Sudbury Catholic Schools Give Back to the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee
Staff and students at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board raised $1,923.10 to support the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee. Leaves of Change: Binaakwe Giizis is a fundraiser which took place on October 14, 2022, to promote environmental stewardship.
The goal of the fundraiser is to engage in civic and environmental responsibility by bringing attention to climate change and better understand how we can protect the earth for future generations. Throughout the day and the month of October, students and staff are encouraged to make more sustainable efforts. This includes cleaning green spaces by picking up trash and litter, recycling, using a reusable water bottle and reducing day to day waste, where possible.
In addition, October is known as Binaakwe Giizis – Moon of Falling Leaves. The fundraiser also served as an educational opportunity to understand, acknowledge, and respect Indigenous perspectives on caring for Mother Earth (Shkagamik Kwe).
“As a school board, it is our responsibility to create opportunities that teach the importance of protecting the earth for future generations.Environmental degradation affects the health and well-being of all peoples of North America and the world in many ways. By participating in this fundraiser, and the many planned activities, we help our community engage in volunteerism and create hope through environmental restoration,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.
K-12 Cyber Awareness Month
To help Ontario school boards promote safer and more secure practices across their school communities when using digital technologies and the internet, The Educational Computing Network of Ontario (ECNO) has introduced a a campaign to promote cyber safety and encourage individuals to become better online cyber citizens.
The K-12 Cyber Awareness Month (CAM) campaign has been tailored for K-12 education and focuses on promoting cyber security, online safety and privacy in schools and the community. This campaign is an adaptation of October Cyber Security Awareness Month, which is often mentioned in the media.

An Education That Inspires: Register Now for the 2022-2023 School Year!
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board invites parents and students in all grades to register with Sudbury Catholic Schools for the 2022-2023 school year!
Parents can register their children for Kindergarten (for children turning 4 years of age on or before December 31, 2022). There are both regular and French Immersion programs available. For a full list of English Catholic elementary schools, please go to the following link.

Sudbury Catholic Teacher Receives Prestigious Math Award
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is pleased to congratulate Bishop Alexander Carter CSS secondary teacher, Julie Denomme, who was formally recognized by the University of Waterloo and inducted into The Society of Descartes Medallists for her exceptional work in mathematics.
The Society of Descartes Medallists was founded in 1968 by the Rene Descartes Foundation for the Advancement of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. Sine 1968, the Society meets annually to pay tribute to Ontario mathematics and computer science teachers identified as worthy of special recognition. Every year since it was established, the Foundation has admitted a small number of new members, chosen for their contribution to the noble cause of mathematics education.
Denomme, was only one of two recipients recognized by the Rene Descartes Foundation in 2021. Denomme attended the 53rd Rene Descartes Medallist Dinner on June 11th, 2022, in Waterloo where she was able to officially be inducted into the Society.
“We are so proud of Mrs. Denomme for her exceptional dedication to student learning. Her fearless approach to embracing new teaching and evaluation strategies makes a real difference in our school. She consistently uses her passion to evolve her instruction on important subjects and improve the way students learn to make a real impact on their education.
