St. Benedict SHSM Students Visit Hatch Engineering!

Students from St Benedict Computer Science class and the SHSM Business students attended a fieldtrip to Hatch Engineering accompanied by our teachers Maurizio Depoli and Giuseppe Politi.    

Our students had the opportunity to tour the new Hatch facility on Regent St to spark their interest in the many future careers that exist at Hatch and other engineering fields.  The engineers at Hatch facilitated sessions for the students to introduce them to the world of electrical and mechanical engineering, while feeding them a delicious lunch too!

The students were also shown how machinery and engineering are used in mining.  The presentation gave the students a glimpse of how technology is used in the workplace and how new technology is being developed to create a safer environment for all workers.

Mr. Depoli along with our students will partner with Hatch to start our First Robotics Canada program.  This exciting new venture will be great learning opportunity for our Bears!  

Katie Martel, a St Benedict Alumnus, organized the day for our students to learn about how science can work in so many different ways!

Sudbury Catholic Schools Welcome the Year of the Rabbit!

The Lunar New Year is a time for celebration and renewal, and it is an important cultural event for many around the world. This year, the Lunar New Year falls on January 22nd, 2023, and marks the start of the Year of the Rabbit.

In Chinese culture, the rabbit is a symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity, so it is regarded that 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope.

Many of our schools find unique ways to celebrate this holiday, and we look forward to seeing how they will incorporate the celebration of Lunar New Year into the classroom by teaching students about the holiday and its history through activities.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity, and celebrating Lunar New Year is one way to accomplish this. By celebrating Lunar New Year, we promote understanding and acceptance of different cultures, and foster a sense of community within our learning environments.

Wishing everyone a Happy Lunar New Year! May the Year of the Rabbit bring good luck, prosperity, and hope to all.

Family Literacy Day 2023

Family Literacy Day is an important event that is celebrated annually in Canada on January 27th. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of literacy and the role that families play in supporting the literacy development of their children.

Sudbury Catholic District School Board recognizes the crucial role that literacy plays in the success of our students. Literacy is not only the ability to read and write, but also the ability to understand and use information in a variety of contexts. It is essential for academic success and for personal growth and development.

We also acknowledge the important role that families play in promoting literacy at home. Research has shown that children who have parents and guardians who read to them, talk to them, and encourage them to read independently, have a stronger foundation in literacy which can help them succeed at school.

That is why we encourage all of our families to participate in Family Literacy Day activities. Reading together as a family, visiting the library, and participating in literacy-related events can all be fun and engaging ways to promote literacy and support the literacy development of our students.

On this Family Literacy Day, let’s celebrate the power of literacy and the importance of families working together to support the literacy development of their children. Let’s work together to create a literate and informed community, where every child has the opportunity to succeed.

Holy Cross Students Participate in French Speaking Contest!

French Immersion students at Holy Cross School participated in the Canadian Parents for French public speaking contest and it was a great success! This contest highlights the tremendous ability of our immersion students to communicate in French and is a testament to the amazing support the teacher and school is providing.

Sudbury Catholic Schools Offers Two New Language and Heritage Programs

We are proud to announce two new language and heritage programs: Spanish and Yoruba! These programs are designed for children in Kindergarten to Grade 8 and provide the opportunity to speak, listen, write and read any international language, while learning about the culture and heritage associated with the language. The Spanish and Yoruba language and heritage programs will run every Saturday from Feb 25th-June 17th 2023, (9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.) at St. Albert Learning Centre.

The Fourth Sunday of Advent: The Angel’s Candle/ Symbolizing Peace

December 18 marks the fourth Sunday of Advent for 2022. Together, we all await the birth of a baby boy, the light of the world, coming to transform us, so that we can transform the world. The month of December is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, celebrated on December 8th. The first 24 days of December fall during the liturgical season of Advent and are represented by the colour purple. During Advent it is fitting that we celebrate the virtue of patience, for we recognize that we are patiently awaiting Jesus’ coming.

Advent Prayer

Dear Lord,

Send down Your Spirit to guide me during Advent this year. May the Holy Spirit help me journey closer to You and lift me up when I feel down and led me when I feel lost. I may stumble at times, but I know my ultimate journey is to draw closer to You and build Your kingdom here on earth–a kingdom that Jesus’s birth, life and death helped secure.

Amen.

St. Albert Adult Learning Centre welcomes YMCA Settlement Worker!

The Settlement Worker in the Schools(SWIS) program is a partnership with YMCA Immigration Services and Sudbury Catholic District School Board in providing settlement services to the students and their families. Services are provided on an ongoing and as-needed basis.

SWIS Services may include:

  • Information and orientation sessions about the education school system focusing on support for school registrations, student requirements and education terminology 
  • Support in attending parent/teacher interviews
  • Social Integration support to participate in school events and activities
  • Needs assessment and referrals to community resources
  • Community connections to support systems within the schools and community
  • Social integration support to participate in school events and activities
  • Information sessions to school staff to ensure cultural awareness and understanding of the challenges newcomers face adjusting to a new academic environment
  • Study Buddy Initiatives

PEACE Program Students are Busy Making Sweet Gifts

Students in the PEACE program at St. Albert Adult Learning Centre are busy fulfilling orders for the Christmas season. Students learn a variety of essential skills while handcrafting and selling one of a kind gifts.

What better way to say, “You’re as sweet as honey” with these custom, handcrafted honey dippers made from quality wood such as birch, poplar and maple. Each honey dipper can take anywhere from 2- 4 hours to create.

About the PEACE Program:

PEACE (Personalized Experiential Alternative Caring Education) program is an alternative school for teens who have anxiety, depression and personal issues that interfere with their schooling. It is a second chance for many students, where students can have teacher support, learn techniques to overcome obstacles, and learn new skills through Peace Pens: a student-run, self sustaining business. These high-school aged students earn credits creatively, and partake in engaging alternative activities including fitness, outdoor education, and art workshops. All pens and other products in the PEACE shop are custom made and created from start to finish by students in the program. Each item has its own unique style reflective of the creator. Any item purchased will come with an insert containing a description of the program, the type of wood or acrylic used, and the name of the student who created the item.

SCC Students Pair Up with Holy Trinity Students for Hour of Code Workshops

Students in Mrs. Whalen’s computer science class at St. Charles College paired up with grade 5/6 classes at Holy Trinity this morning to participate in some Hour of Code workshops! SCC students taught the Holy Trinity students about computer science, coding, and helped them work through fun coding challenges on Scratch, Minecraft and using Lego EV3 robots. It was a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, and a wonderful way to wrap up Computer Science Education Week!
