Bishop Alexander Carter Students Advance to Championship Rounds in the Skills Ontario’s Junk Drawer Races!

Grades 2-12 students across the province were invited to participate in the first-ever Skills Ontario’s Junk Drawer Races!  In this program, students had fun while exploring various challenges to build their skills and explore different pathways.

This morning the winners of the Regional round of the competition were announced on Skills Ontario’s  YouTube channel.

We are excited to report that a team of BAC grade 7 students placed 2nd in the Air Glider Challenge and three teams of BAC grade 8 students placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the hydraulic crane challenge.

These teams will be competing in the Provincial Championship round and will have until February 16th to review their existing blueprints, potentially modify their designs to meet the provincial challenge and construction requirements while explaining their modifications and submit their new submissions.  Provincial Submissions will be evaluated by industry volunteers, and the top three teams will be awarded prizes by Skills Ontario. Winning teams will be notified by March 10th . 

We wish our students the best of luck and thank Skills Ontario, industry partners, the Government of Ontario and Bombardier for giving our students a unique experiential learning opportunity.

Come Celebrate Family Literacy Day with SCDSB!

Sudbury Catholic Schools is pleased to celebrate Family Literacy Day with ABC Life Literacy Canada’s National Family!

What Is Family Literacy Day?

Family Literacy Day takes place every January 27th to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Since 1999, thousands of schools, libraries, literacy organizations and other community groups have taken part in the initiative. ABC creates free learning and promotional resources for anyone that wants to get involved. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.

Virtual Story Time with Howard Binkow

Howard Binkow, from Sarasota Florida, is the author of the Howard B. Wigglebottom series. Mr. Binkow will launch our celebration with a read aloud and give Sudbury Catholic students a question and answer period.

Learn to Make Play Dough  

Grade: K-Grades 6 

WHEN: JAN. 27TH AT 1:00 PM-1:30 PM

Teachers are encouraged to have students join this live session where together they will learn how to make Play Dough with flour, salt, water and food colouring. Teachers can extend the activity into another art lesson and/or invite families to join Barbara Reid’s live demonstration later in the day.

Celebrate Family Literacy Day 2022 with Honorary Chair Barbara Reid 

GRADES: K-Grades 6

Barbara Reid will be doing a demonstration on how to use clay/play dough to create a picture. She will share unique techniques that students can use to make different things. The event will end with a Q&A.

CANCELLED SCHOOL BUS ROUTES

Please be aware that the Sudbury Student Services Consortium is encountering a higher than normal rate of absences for bus drivers due to COVID-19 and the Omicron variant.  


Each morning they will post daily cancellations on our website, parents are reminded to verify the cancellations by visiting www.businfo.ca. Please be advised that parents will not be receiving telephone calls or emails.

Holy Cross students reflect what has helped them be successful during remote learning

Students at Holy Cross School in the South End missed being in-person at school, but rather than sit back these young leaders found creative ways to focus on the positive and stay connected to their friends and teachers! 

In an innovative way that allowed them to unite and connect with their school community from afar, Holy Cross School asked their students, with their guardian’s permission, to submit pictures and share incites on what got them through the latest stint of online learning at home. 

Bradley Wolski, in grade two, expressed that he enjoyed being cozy in his room while drumming and making noise during music class. He also enjoyed taking Dewey the dog for a walk at recess time. What a good idea! 

Preeya Mulligan-Graton says, “what helps me learn online is knowing that all my friends are learning with me. We are all in it together.” 

Tishe Esan says what keeps her going is “a comfy and quiet place where she can concentrate when learning at home.”

Overall, students thoroughly enjoyed speaking about their personal experiences on how they have been learning online. 

Although many students are looking forward to returning to in-class learning in the near future, this opportunity provided an integrative experience where students could discover how other individuals in their exact position kept positive.

A total of 24 students submitted their stories and pictures. As a special reward for inspiring and uplifting their school as young role models, these students received their very own Cub toque to help them keep on the schoolyard upon their return. Great work, Cubs!

Join us! Guest Presentation by Indigenous War Veteran, Tim O’Loan

Guest Speaker: Indigenous Veteran  ~  Tim O’Loan

Sudbury Catholic Schools is pleased to invite Grade 7-12 classrooms to attend a presentation by our guest speaker, Tim O’Loan. Tim O’Loan is a is a proud indigenous (Sahtu Dene) Veteran, having served 10 years (1983-1993) in the military. During his presentation, classes will be taken through Tim’s story as he provides his insight and experiences to provide an engaging presentation that ends with an interactive Q/A session.

“Tim O’Loan comes from two wounded communities: one military, one Indigenous. Tim is a proud Indigenous (Sahtu Dene) Veteran, having served 10 years (1983-1993) in the military. Throughout Tim’s life he experienced massive amounts of racism and trauma. The racism and his search for his identity was something Tim struggled with until his mid 40’s when he started working at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).” Given his unique history, Tim O’Loan now identifies as a knowledge keeper and continues to share this unique perspective across Canada and beyond, particularly through the Indigenous Veterans lens, mental health and Reconciliation.

St. David Families Learn to Make Hot Chocolate Balls Together!

Students and their families from St. David Catholic Elementary School were invited to join Skills Ontario’s Winterfest Celebration. Last night, families had a fun evening of learning how to make Hot Chocolate Balls led by Skills Ontario expert and Summer Camp Program Manager Kayla Bezarie. 

Families learned the technique of tempering chocolate while trying out the skills of a Patisserie or Pastry Chef.

Students also learned the virtue of patience and the rule that if at first you don’t succeed, try again! 

A parent, Amanda Tyson said, “We enjoyed making the hot chocolate bombs! Although we need some more practice, we still had fun!”

“Oh what fun we had tonight with this project. Thanks to Skills Ontario Winterfest for a new challenge. We had some failures but managed to complete 6. Look forward to trying more during the holidays.”stated Taryn Gorrie, another parent.

Skilled Trades are Not Just for Men!

Last week students from Grades 7-12 at Sudbury Catholic Schools had the opportunity to hear from Jamie McMillan, a Journeyman Ironworker/Boilermaker and founder of Work Boots Careers/Kick-Ass Careers.

Jamie has been an Ironworker since 2002. Although she’s always been fascinated by mining and construction, and acting as her dad’s “side kick” around the house, it took a while before Jamie found her calling.

After graduating from high school in Timmins, her mom encouraged her to go into nursing. Jamie became a personal support worker by day and waitress and bartender by night. She was miserable, and didn’t like the pay or the hours, and wanted something more.

Jamie had just moved to Hamilton when she bumped into an old high school acquaintance on the street, who happened to be an Ironworker. That was the moment everything changed. “I looked up the union hall in the phone book and I walked in there, and I’m so glad,” Jamie says. She filled out applications, sent in high school transcripts, took tests, and was hired as an apprentice by Ironworkers Local 736 in Hamilton. She “earned and learned,” putting her union hall training and instruction in welding and fabrication into practice on the job.

Jamie speaks to more than 25,000 students, parents, educators and employers each year across North America. She has opened doors and minds to the career possibilities in the skilled trades, and shows youth an alternate pathway to rewarding and well-paid careers in the trades. She is also an inspiration and mentor to hundreds of young women. Jamie takes several months off each year from her skilled trades job to promote careers in underrepresented occupations and to encourage youth to consider the vast opportunities skilled labour has to offer.

Alina Rukkila MSW, RSW and Jessie Jones CYW will lead us through an engaging session on dealing with the different types of stress and provide helpful strategies and tips we can incorporate to help us manage it when it happens. 

We all know that not all types of stress are bad. Good types of stress can help you focus, ensure you meet your daily challenges, and encourage you to reach specific goals you have for yourself. However, it’s essential to understand the difference between good and harmful types of stress. Over time, a continued strain on the body put on from stress can get the best of you. It’s paramount to identify the causes of daily stress and manage the intensity of these feelings. By knowing healthy coping strategies, we can enjoy life and learn happily.
