On Friday March 28th representatives from Samaritan’s Purse/Operation Christmas Child visited the staff and students of St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School. The students were given first hand descriptions of “shoe boxes” reaching children in the third world. St. Andrew School has participated in this social justice endeavour for the past two years and intend on participating once again next December. Students and their families gather small gift itemsfor either a boy or girl and place them in a shoe box. PIctured is a proud Mrs. Henry (principal) and the two Samaritan Purse representatives as they give her a thank you plague to place in the school foyer.

St. John School Wins Gold in Nesbitt Challenge!
With an intense effort from grade 7 & 8 students, the St. John Catholic Elementary School’s very first ice-hockey team took home the cup in the 2nd Annual Nesbitt Challenge. The team competed againstt 9 other teams across the Greater City of Sudbury and won 1st in the finals againstt the Lively Hawks with a score of 5-3. Coaches, Mr. Stargratt, Mrs. Vaillancourt, Mr. Gobbo, and Mr. Benoit were honoured to coach such a remarkable group of students and are immensely proud of the dedication and sportsmanship demonstrated by all of their players. SCDSB Band Enjoying a Successful Season
The Sudbury Catholic Elementary Band, directed by Vice Principal JoAnne Comisso and teaher Leanne Urso, has just finished a very successful Festival season. On February 27 the students performed at the Northern Ontario Music Festival, held at Sudbury Secondary School, where the students received a Silver award. To follow up that achievement, they competed at the Kiwanis Music Festival on March 24 at St. Benedict School. The band was very excited to receive a Gold award! All their hard work is definitely paying off, and we wish them continued success as they head into their spring concert season. This band is comprised of students from St. Anne, St. Benedict, St. Raphael and Pius XII Catholic Elementary Schools.
Celebrating Franco-Fun Day at St. Bernadette
March 20th, 2014 was Franco-Ontario Day at St. Bernadette Catholic School! Maxx, Tyler and Carter were busy making green and white cookies to help celebrate ” the love of our rich French heritage.” YUM!
Franco-Fun at St. Ben’s
Students at St Benedict Catholic Secondary School participated actively in an afternoon of Franco Fun Day activities on Friday March 21st 2014. The students were submerged in the French culture, music, language, and food in a series of challenges which involved some friendly competition againstt each other for a chance to participate in the grand finale. There were many laughs shared as the day was a huge success and enjoyed by all!
Marymount Regals Take OFSSA Curling Gold
The Marymount Regals curling team came home OFSAA champions this past weekend with an 8-3 win over Brockville in Brampton. The team, consisting of skip Krysta Burns, vice, Monica Graham, second Cynthia Furlotte and lead Kaylyn Collin and Kayla Nickson were elated with their gold medal win and the school’s second curling crown ever, and first since 1981. Team coach/teacher Brenda Thompson was extremely proud of the girls and was thrilled that they played so well and remained undefeated during every round. “I, as well as the rest of the school, are so proud of this team and their commitment to playing to the best of their ability,” Thompson said. “ Many of the students and staff were able to watch the final game line online, and were ecstatic to see the team crowned as the provincial champions, which is an absolutely incredible accomplishment!”
“Game on” for Franco Fun Day at SCC
Francofun Day really did get fun and competitive with the help of board games at St. Charles College on March 20, 2014. The students celebrated their French language and culture by playing The Game of Life/Destins, French Pictionary and Tic Tac Boom in teacher Anthony Malafarina’s Immersion class.
“This forced the students to converse and have fun while thinking about French language studies” said Malafarina.
The Franco Fun day was celebrated today by all Sudbury Catholic Schools in either Core French or Immersion classes.
BACCSS Receives Significant Donation
Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School was pleased to be a recipient of some funds from the Sudbury Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The school was among one of a handful of chosen recipients from this year’s applications. CIM donated $ 8111.00 for the school to purchase new equipment for their technology department. A metallurgical bender and a MIG stick welding machine was purchased and will be used to teach students the skills and techniques involved with fabricating and manufacturing.
Celebrating Franco-Fun days at St. John School
At St. John Catholic Elementary School, their activities for Franco-Fun day were spread over a three day period. On March 19th, their French Immersion FDK program created beautiful Franco-Ontarian flags and proudly waved them to show how lucky they are to learn a second language!
On March 20th, the school started off our morning announcements with music from the Franco-Ontarian group SWING followed by a few fun and interesting facts about the French language and culture across the world. The grade 1 & 2 French Immersion, grade 1 English and grade 5/6 English classes then had the opportunity to go out snowshoeing, led by Bradley Blackwell from the Killarney Centre’s outreach program. Through this activity, the younger students were able to learn about animals and their habitat. The older students were able to better understand the purpose of snowshoes and how important is was for French Settlers to build and maintain a friendship with the First Nation’s people if they were to survive when they arrived to this new land we now call Canada. Students were also encouraged to greet each other in the hallway in French throughout the day. Quelle belle journée!
On March 21st, all students at St. John School were given a button or tattoo that allowed them to show their support for French learning within the school community. They also attended a magic show in the gym with one of their own supply teachers, The Amazing René! The children and staff alike enjoyed the bilingual presentation and actively took part in the show.
