SCDSB Celebrates Earth Day!

During the month of April, we celebrate the virtue of stewardship.
As Catholics, stewardship calls us to share our gifts of time and talents. This month we especially look towards our role as stewards of the environment. How can we act responsibility as keepers of the beautiful world God has given us?

Wednesday, April 22nd is Earth Day! And this year marks the 50th anniversary of Canadians’ participation in Earth Day celebrations. Though we are not in our schools, as a community we can still mark the occasion by joining our collective efforts and celebrating this important day. Let’s share the efforts our students can take at home, by showcasing how simple and concrete actions can lead to a positive impact on the environment.

From April 20-24th, we invite students to participate by submitting a digital format of their actions to Earth Day 2020 Entry Form. Please note, when submitting, participants will need to use a google account. This requires a Gmail e-mail address. For those that do not have access to their google account, submissions can be e-mailed to Joan Yawney at yawneyj@suburycatholicschools.ca.

Examples might include:

Make a pledge sharing your commitment to practice environmental stewardship
Write a poem, story, song, comic strip, etc. sharing your commitment to care for the earth
Show your creativity by creating an art piece using only recyclable items from your home or making a nature collage
As a family, commit to changing habits (turn off the lights, recycle, compost, etc.) and share your commitment
Pick up litter in your yard, ensuring to practice social distancing measures
Create an environmental ad in video format
Plant seeds and plan a home garden
Make seed balls to care for the birds
etc.

Update on EQAO Assessments

Please be advised that the Ontario Ministry of Education has announced that all EQAO assessments (Grades 3, 6, 9 and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test) have been canceled for the remainder of this school year. We appreciate the hard work completed by staff and students in preparing for these assessments.

The literacy graduation requirement (OSSLT) for students who are graduating in the 2019-20 school year has been waived.

Students who are not graduating this school year will write the OSSLT in the upcoming 2020-21 school year.

Sudbury Catholic Schools Embrace Summer Learning!

Students at Sudbury Catholic Schools completed another year of summer learning this month! 60 students from Kindergarten to Grade 3 completed the three-week Summer Learning Program at St. David School from July 8 – July 26, 2019.

Students participated in a literacy and numeracy program, which supported students in improving their skills at their own pace. The program also featured various activities centered around Indigenous culture. The program was led by both classroom teachers and camp counsellors, providing a full educational team to participating students. Through the online tool and app Lexia, teachers and counsellors were able to provide a visual experience for both the literacy and numeracy components, and students are able to continue to access their account from home throughout the summer.

As in past years, each morning began with a physical activity which helped to energize students and build confidence so that they were ready to learn. This year, the group participated in Zumba sessions provided by Zumba Vibe.

The Board is thrilled with student participation in this year’s Summer Learning Program.

“The work and effort that goes into making the summer learning program a success each year is truly inspiring,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “With the right tools, support and amazing staff, participating students were able to improve their skills and enjoy the experience along the way!”

The Summer Learning Program is a Ministry funded program which aims to promote literacy and numeracy learning for students during the summer months in fun and engaging ways.

Holy Cross students honour National Indigenous Peoples Day

Grade 6 students in Miss Scola’s class, at Holy Cross Elementary, acknowledged National Indigenous People’s Day by holding group discussions and participating in an art activity. In the morning, students viewed “In Our Words,” a series of videos from the Ministry of Education that explores the events that took place between Europeans and Indigenous peoples in the early years of settlement, in what is now called Canada. Following each video, students lead discussions on their thoughts of early colonization and how the Indigenous Peoples were treated. In the afternoon, students took part in an art activity that was inspired by Contemporary Indigenous artist Faye Heavyshield. The Grade 6 students are hopeful that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will lead to a renewed relationship between the Government of Canada and the Indigenous Peoples through respect, rights, co-operation and partnership.

Students Participate in First Ever SCDSB Model UN Conference

Secondary students from all four secondary schools were able to participate in the first ever SCDSB Model UN Conference hosted at St. Charles College. The event was an opportunity for local and international students to come together and unpack an issue from an international perspective.

Approximately 75 students participated in this first-ever event! Students worked to find possible solutions within the United Nations framework to resolve the global human trafficking crisis. The event leveraged diversity and encouraged participants to develop global citizenship skills!

Students were awarded in the following categories:

Best Delegates: Liam Couisneau (St. Charles College) and Rosaria Nero (St. Benedict)

Honourable mentions: Madison Penrose (Bishop Alexander Carter) and Amy Godin (Marymount Academy)

Best international delegates: Ryan Dinh (St. Charles College) and Zihao Wang (St. Benedict)

St. Francis Flames Celebrate Literacy Day with Annual Book Swap

St. Francis staff and students celebrated Literacy Day and their love of books with its annual book swap organized by the school’s resource teacher, Ms. G. Visentin. Staff and students kicked off the special event arriving to school dressed as their favourite story book character. Students donated gently used books from their home and traded them in for “new” books. The school’s gathering room had a large selection of book titles on display for students to choose from in both English and French languages. The book swap provided an excellent opportunity for students to reuse, exchange books and encourage reading.

Attendance Awareness Poster winners announced!

Sudbury Catholic Schools and the Attendance Counsellors held the annual poster contest in October. In order to engage students from FDK to Grade 12, the poster contest promoted the importance of regular school attendance. It was a huge success with nearly 500 students participating!

Sudbury Catholic District School holds Inaugural Meeting for the new term

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board proudly held the annual Inaugural meeting on Tuesday, December 4, 2018. During the meeting, Trustees Michael Bellmore, Jody Cameron, Alex Cimino, Nancy Deni, Raymond Desjardins and Estelle Scappatura were commissioned to the Board for a four-year term.

The inaugural meeting also included the election of the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson. Michael Bellmore was elected Board Chair and Ray Desjardins was elected Vice-Chair of the Board.

“I am honoured to continue to serve as the Board Chair for another term,” said Michael Bellmore, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “I am proud to sit on a Board that encourages diversity, collaboration and leadership. I look forward to working with the Board during this next term”

“I am honoured to serve as vice-chair for the Board of Trustees,” said Ray Desjardins, Vice-Chair for the Board of Trustees for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “I have such a wonderful history with Catholic Education. My childhood and teen years were in Catholic Schools. As an adult with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board I was teacher, principal and now trustee. I look forward to serving alongside my fellow Catholic trustees in our new term. “

The meeting began with a mass which was officiated by Father Larry Rhymes. Board meetings take place on the third Tuesday of each month during the school year at 6 p.m. and are open to the public.
