We were proud to honour our employees on May 31, 2018 in our annual retirement dinner. Together, we honoured the recipients of this year’s Chairperson’s Award as well as those employees who have given 25 years of service and those who are retiring this year! Thank you for your commitment to our Catholic community!
St. Benedict Welcomes New Community Liason Officer from GSPS
There is a new uniformed police officer who will be visiting English high schools in the city.
Stefany Mussen began her duties this week and today she received a tour of St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, one of the schools on her roster.
She introduced herself to a number of students in the building in an effort to ensure they know who she is and approach her about issues or questions they have on future visits.
Mussen replaces Constable Hally Willmott who serviced a number of high schools for a number of years.
Sudbury Catholic Schools honours recipients of this year’s Chairperson’s Award
We are excited to announce the recipients of this year’s Chairperson’s Award! All three individuals embody the Board’s vision as leaders in learning and faith. They strive to support their school community in any way they can and have each helped shape the unique culture present within their schools.
Julie Hammond is a secretary at St. David Catholic Elementary School. She serves as the first person students, staff and guests see as they enter the building and she always greets everyone with a warm smile! Julie works tirelessly each and every day to ensure the daily operations of the school are taken care of. She acts as the ‘go-between’ for all special activities occurring at the school and works with community partners to provide the safest and healthiest learning environment for all students. Julie embraces the Catholic values and models them on a daily basis. She promotes equity within her school community and advocates to provide St. David with physical, mental, spiritual and emotional support when anyone is in need.
Steve Callaghan serves as the Chaplain at St. Charles College. He is selfless in his vocation whether it be at St. Charles College or his home parish of St. Kevin’s, where he also serves as Deacon. Kind and patient, Steve always makes sure to provide support to staff, students and whoever else is in need. Steve leads two Antioch Retreat Weekends each year for students at St. Charles College. The powerful weekend of prayer, reflection and spiritual bonding has united participating students, and provides them with a voice. Steve also organizes the annual Christmas Toy Drive, works in the Breakfast Program room each morning and is on the planning committee for the annual St. Charles College Food Drive.
Paola Stefanuto is a lunchroom supervisor at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School. In addition to this role, Paola also serves as a school volunteer, book fair chairperson, snack coordinator and helps run various school events such as silent auctions, fun fairs and Christmas concerts. Paola mentors many students and guides them as they prepare and deliver healthy snacks to classrooms twice a week. She has also created a cooking club in partnership with the Sudbury District Health Unit. She lives each day with the Board’s values as her guide and looks forward to entering the building of Holy Cross school no matter the task.
“The recipients of this year’s award act as true leaders within our system,” said Michael Bellmore, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “Whether they are organizing an event, mentoring students or providing spiritual or emotional support to whoever is in need, they embody our mission and vision as a Board in all that they do. We are very proud to honour them.”

Wednesday April 4 2018 – Transportation cancelled
Due to the reduced visibility and the snow covered roads and in the interest of safety, all school related transportation services for English catholic, English public, French catholic and French public schools, operating in the districts of SUDBURY, ESPANOLA, MANITOULIN AND MASSEY (this includes all areas such as St-Charles, Noelville, Monetville, Markstay, Hagar, Warren, Wahnapitae, Coniston, Killarney, Whitefish, Whitefish River First Nations, Manitoulin Island, Onaping, Chelmsford, Capreol, Valley East, Garson, Chelmsford, Azilda, …) are cancelled today. All schools will remain open, however, NO transportation will be provided.
Parents who transport their children to school are reminded that they must pick their children up at the end of the school day.
All staff is expected to report to work.

GSPS Media Release – St. Charles College
The Greater Sudbury Police Service is working in collaboration with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and St. Charles College to address the recent concerns of a supposed threat at the school today, Thursday, March 29, 2018. The supposed threat circulating social media was in relation to a “kill list” and potential shooting in the school during mass.
We would like to take the opportunity to address some of the speculation that has been posted on social media and hopefully reassure staff, students and parents. The Greater Sudbury Police Service and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board take these types of matters very seriously and Officers have been investigating the matter in order to determine its validity.
No physical evidence of a “kill list” was ever located by school administration.
Officers attended the residence of the young man and spoke with him and his guardian. The young man and his guardian indicated that he does not have access to a firearm. The young man also indicated that he was unaware of the recent social media activity surrounding him. He stated that he had no intention of attending St. Charles College today and that he had no intention of shooting anyone.
There will be a Police presence at St. Charles College throughout the day today as a precaution and in order to ensure that staff and students feel safe.
