St. Charles Catholic Elementary School participated in hat day on May 11th. This is in remembrance of Johnathan Hetu a past student of St. Charles School who passed away from cancer. When Johanthan would return to school he would wear a hat to cover his hairless head, the result of his chemotherapy. Students were encouraged to wear a hat to remember him and all other children who have gone through the same experience. Students paid a dollar to wear a hat. The money that is raised goes to the NOFCC. Hat day this year has raised $154.00. Since Johnathan’s death, St. Charles has had an annual walk and hat day and have raised around $35 000 for the NOFCC (Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer). The annual Johanthan Hetu walk is scheduled for June 8th at 1:30.

Showcase Portfolio and Family Dinner at St. Bernadette
Austin Desrochers, a grade 2 student at St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School proudly shared his showcase portfolio with his father during Catholic Education Week. The school held a Showcase Portfolio and Family Dinner evening on Wednesday, May 9th.
All the students from JK ~ 6 selected works from their portfolios to share with their family members.
Family Dinner with St. Bernadette Community
Over 200 members of the St. Bernadette Catholic school community gathered in the gym to enjoy a lovely meal together on Wednesday, May 9th. Stephanie Poirier , a grade 4 student at St. Bernadette, filled her dish with some lasagna and salad provided by the Caruso Club. Her parents are looking on in the background.
Open House Events At Corpus Christi
Massimo and Donna in Ms. Visentin ‘s Gr. 2/3 class at Corpus Christi School, proudly display the prayer cloth which classmates and family guests signed, after their Open House Celebration during Catholic Education Week. Students and family united in song to “Yes, We Believe” to reaffirm their Catholic Faith, before the activities began. Parents had an opportunity to listen to their favourite poem which the children had created throughout the year, along with many other writing pieces from their Writing Portfolio Collection. The students and their guests also worked together on the laptops in order to design a comic strip which summarized Sudbury’s origins as St. Anne of the Pines.
St. Raphael Early Learning Kindergarten Students Celebrate their Moms
Students in the two Early Learning Kindergarten Programs at St. Raphael Catholic School professed their love of their mothers with a show stopping performance on Monday, May 7th. As part of the school’s Catholic Education Week events, the two classes took turns singing songs in honour of their mothers and grandmothers. The families also enjoyed a slideshow and video presentation that had all the students professing what they loved most about their moms. Afterwards they had the opportunity to share in some refreshments with their classmates and their families. Some students were fortunate enough to have generations of moms together in the room – with grandmothers, and even great grandmothers in attendance. Rosemary Tripodi, one of the Early Learning teachers explained the history of the school’s Mother’s Day tea. “We have been hosting this event for approximately five years now,” Tripodi stated. “Every year, we get such positive feedback as it is really is such a wonderful opportunity to not only showcase our students’ talent, but to give parents a chance to enjoy their child’s company in the school setting. The students, their families and the staff really love this event as it is such a feel good morning – everyone leaves with big smiles and warm hearts!” As well as taking in the performances, the parents also walked around the entire gym as every single wall had pictures and tributes to the students’ mothers.
St. Andrew Hosts Hawaiian Day Bookfair
The parents of St. Andrew School are hosted a Scholastic Book Fair during Catholic Education Week. To kick start the week students were encouraged to get dressed in Hawaiian gear and the best dressed from each class won $10. of free books.
Students Learn about Community at Corpus Christi School
As part of their Catholic Education activities, Corpus Christi students in teacher Eva Scola-Lawryshyn’s grade 1/2 class had the opportunity to come to school dressed as their favourite community helper during the open house. They made a mural of our school community when the parents arrived putting their mapping skills to task. As well, they made their own community helper hats as part of their science unit.
Family Pasta Night at St. Paul
The St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School Council hosted a Family Pasta Night on Thursday April 19. The council members Angela Paris, Jennifer Whynott, Anastasia Rioux, Rikki Larcher, Lisa Wrights and Natasha Folino have provided families opportunities throughout this school year to come together with families from our school to play and socialize. There was a Pizza Night Open House in September, a Family Movie Night in December and now this Spaghetti Supper in April. Families enjoyed the opportunity to visit, enjoy good food and let their children play together in an after school setting. The co-chairs of the Council hope that this relaxed atmosphere will encourage parents to become comfortable and ultimately more involved in their children’s school and the Catholic School Council.
Immaculate Students Continue to Inspire Change
Several months ago, a group of three students in teacher Chantal Rancourt’s grade 5/6 class were inspired to make a difference in the world. All on their own, these grade 6 Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary students decided that they wanted to start fundraising for the Ryan’s Well Foundation, which helps buy and build wells in countries where there is little access to clean water. In December they launched their own school fundraiser with the goal of raising $2000 to contribute to this foundation. After their first initial event, the girls – Abigail Morgan, Sydney Hall and Alexa Connors, had raised over $210 from the one day. Since then, they have had an additional $300 raised through more donations. On April 18th, 2012, the students organized a “fun day” fundraiser to secure more funds for their cause. “They have basically made all of the arrangements and plans all on their own,” teacher Chantal Rancourt stated. “These girls are amazing – they have done all the set up, organized all the events, and planned all the teams and team captains. I am so proud of their enthusiasm with this initiative!” Immaculate students were asked to bring in a toonie to take part in the fun day which included an obstacle course and a variety of sports and speed games. At the end of the day, their total had climbed to over $1650 – very close to their goal of $2000. The girls have one more event planned – a zumba fundraiser. When asked to comment about their inspirational efforts, the girls replied in unison “Inspiration is the key to the future!” The girls explained that this was their motto and they had decided to be inspiring and to spark inspiration in others. Their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed as a person from their community, after reading the initial story on their fundraiser, was so inspired by their determination, offered to help them reach their goal and would top up the remaining funds after their events were completed. Abigail, Syndey and Alexa were thrilled that they had inspired a stranger to get involved. All three have decided that this is just the beginning, and will continue to make positive changes in the future.
