Bear Necessities campaign for Hospice wraps up

More than 11-hundred personal hygiene items collected for Maison McCullough Hospice on behalf of St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School.

From body wash to bath salts and wipes, the students at St. Benedict’s Catholic school have been collecting items for Maison McCullough Hospice.

Coined the Bear Necessities Campaign a few years ago, the students collect the items in their effort to be caring family members and collaborative contributors.

This year, the students turned it into a friendly house competition. From Karhu to Urso, the houses have been collecting very specific items for patients who are nearing the end of life in the palliative care facility. Karhu took top honours.

More than 11 hundred items were collected ranging from shaving razors, dry shampoo, hair brushes, combs and diapers and will be delivered to the hospice in the coming days.

Marymount Academy hosts successful first annual Walk, Bike or Run Fun Day!

Marymount Academy held its first ever Walk, Bike or Run event on Saturday May 5 at Kivi Park alongside Maison McCulloch Hospice. The event was a lot of fun and a huge success, bringing in $11, 432 in funds. It was then matched through the generosity of Lily Fielding, bringing the total to $23,000! Funds raised will be split between Marymount and the Hospice. Amazing work Regals!

St Francis Flames Raise the Flag for Autism Awareness!

Many of our schools brought awareness to autism by wearing blue. Staff and students at St. Francis also took part in a special assembly to mark this important day! The group watched videos, sang songs and raised the flag to stand up for each other.

We are all part of the puzzle! Thanks for the reminder Flames!

St. Charles College Kicks off Annual Food Drive Campaign!

If the students at St. Charles College and its feeder schools had their way – no one would go hungry in our community this year!

St. Charles College is kicking off their annual food drive at feeder schools St. David, St. John, St. Paul, Pius XII and Holy Trinity. For over three decades, they have been collecting cans to feed local families. Every year, they have surpassed their goal by collecting thousands of cans from the community.

The SCC contribution is always the largest single donation to the Sudbury Food Bank each year and the food bank has grown to rely on the major haul of cans and cash. We are asking for the community’s assistance in helping us, once again, surpass our goal.

Our students will be going out into the community in order to collect non-perishable food items. Please start collecting and feel free to drop off at St. Charles College. The kids will also be helping to bag groceries at Metro on Thursday, October 19th, Chris’ Independent on Friday, October 20th and Vrab’s Independent on Saturday, October 21st and are hoping to gather donations from the public at that time.

We look forward to once again this year, continuing to feed the needy and make a difference in our community.

Entire Marymount Student Population Completes ICE Certification!

The students at Marymount Academy had a unique opportunity to work with the Maison McCulloch Hospice! Through ICE Certification (Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship Certification Certification), the school worked in groups to assist the Hospice, providing solutions to a real-life case study. The students will then present their ideas to the Hospice, who will help bring them to life!

This is a great opportunity for our Regals to learn about the value of business and creativity and give back to our community at the same time!

Cards Raise Over $21,000 During Relay for Life Event!

The St. Charles College Cardinal Relay Committee presented a cheque of more than $21,000 to the Canadian Cancer Society during their annual Relay for Life event.
Lead organizers, Jennifer Humphrey and Krystal Rewega are looking forward to next year. Principal Patty Mardero says “it doesn’t matter what goal is set for the Cards, they always have a way of meeting and also exceeding their target which is a true testament to their character and strength.”

Popular radio personality DJ G-Rant of The New HOT 93.5 led the troops early Tuesday with an inspirational speech highlighting his own personal battle with the disease. He encouraged the students to give blood when they are the legal age to do so. He also inspired the students to think about their legacy in the world long after they are gone. He also participated in the highly emotional Survivor’s lap – where students, parents, grandparents and staff members who are fighting cancer walked together in unity with all other students following suit as their allies and supporters.

The day-long event featured water balloons, bucket drops, lots of music and entertainment, yoga, Zumba and many other activities to keep the students motivated and having fun throughout the day.

St. Charles College Awarded with the RJ McCarthy Award to Support the Open Doors Program

St. Charles College has been awarded a Catholic Education Foundation of Ontario award for 2017. The RJ McCarthy awards are given to schools for projects that nurture the growth and education of the whole person.

The School plans to use the funds to support students in the Open Doors program, a program to assist at-risk youth. The students in the program will spend the next year building partnerships with local parishes thereby strengthening their faith and faith opportunities.

St. Charles College is the only school in Northern Ontario to be granted this award.

St. Charles Students Host Second Annual Relay For Life Event!

St Charles College hosted their second annual Relay for Life Event in support of Canadian Cancer Society! Many students came out today to participate in the laps, as well as many other fun activities such as face painting and water balloon toss! The event provided the school the opportunity to give back to our community and to many cancer patients across our district. Special thanks to all staff and students who helped put this event together!

St. David School staff thanks 92.7 Rock and A & W

The staff at St. David Catholic School was excited and thankful to be recent recipients of “92.7 Rock Caffeine Kickstart”. Kindergarten teacher, Jennifer Gran submitted the school’s name and applied for the opportunity for her fellow staff members. Mrs. Gran shared how appreciative she and her co-workers are for the newly build school. “The school staff can always be counted on to go that extra mile. Our newly built school building now matches the vibrant energy that the staff, students and families have always carried”. All staff received warm apple turnovers and fresh coffee from A & W. Thank you Mrs. Gran, 92.7 Rock and A & W. Everyone enjoyed the nice treat!
