Immaculate Conception Principal Named CPCO Catholic Principal of the Year

Guy Mathieu, Principal of Immaculate Conception School has been named Principal of the Year by the Catholic Principals’ Council Ontario (CPCO).

Guy Mathieu joined Sudbury Catholic Schools in 2000 and was appointed founding principal of Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School in 2002. Over the course of his 30-year career, Guy served 7 years as a secondary school principal and 12 years as an elementary school principal. Guy has a long-standing passion for French as a Second Language and for building trusting relationships. He has served on numerous board-level committees and uses his enthusiasm for technology to empower his colleagues in their own work.

“I accept this award with a grateful heart on behalf of all those whose paths crossed mine in the past thirty years,” said Guy Mathieu, Principal of Immaculate Conception School. “I think more specifically of the superheroes residing in the hearts of small children fighting big battles and looking to us for compassion and support. I think of all our staff who do their little bit of good where they are, reaching out and lifting people up each day. I think of the leadership team at Sudbury Catholic who chose a vocation that they love and always make the impossible seem possible.”

Mr. Mathieu truly embodies our Board’s mission and vision and what it means to be a servant leader,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “He is a compassionate and innovative leader who is a strong role model and who is always at the ready to provide support to his fellow colleagues and to the students and families at Immaculate Conception School. He is a difference maker”.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we extend a warm congratulations to Mr. Mathieu on this achievement,” said Michael Bellmore, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “His work ethic, passion and dedication to serving our community is truly inspiring.”

We are so grateful that he is a part of the Immaculate Conception family. Congratulations on this much deserved award!” said Susan Traverse Wong, Catholic School Council Chair for Immaculate Conception School.

Guy Mathieu will be presented with an award in April 2021. Catholic Principals’ Council Ontario (CPCO) is the professional association for Principals and Vice-Principals in Ontario’s publicly funded Catholic school system. CPCO also offers services to individuals from other organizations, provinces and countries around the world.

Join our Virtual Learning Series!

The Parent Involvement Committee is very pleased to once again to support virtual learning sessions throughout the winter and spring.

All sessions will take place virtually through Zoom between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. These are excellent opportunities to learn about topics that are relevant to you.

Join our Virtual Dance Party!

On Tuesday evening, families participated in an Hour of Code while participating in a dance party and learning about coding all at the same time! This session was designed for families to learn the basics of coding without even using a device.

Students learned that events are a useful way to control when an action happens and can be used to make multiple things act in sync. In programming, events can be used to respond to a user controlling it (like pressing buttons or clicking the mouse) and that events can make programs more interesting and interactive.

Following, our teachers taught various dance moves such as the “Star, Dab, High Clap and This & That”. Then, families were asked to create their own unique dance algorithm and to share their finished products in order to have a chance to win a family prize pack.

We are Thankful for our ECEs and EAs Today and Everyday!

Today, we celebrate and honour our ECEs and EAs in a special way. We are very fortunate at Sudbury Catholic to have many wonderful, caring and supportive Early Childhood Educators and Educational Assistants in our schools. The support and care that they provide our students each and every day in helping them to grow in mind, body and spirit is foundational to their success. We thank them for their support, their gentle guidance, for inspiring, for helping to create a growth mind set, for helping our students believe in themselves and for all of their contributions to our schools and to our system. Their expertise and commitment inspires our students to grow and to reach their full potential. You truly are amazing!

Celebrating World Teacher Day

On October 5th, we recognize and thank our dedicated and inspiring educators who work tirelessly to support our students in reaching their individual goals. During such unprecedented times our educators have stepped up to ensure that our students continue to receive a quality Catholic education and the supports they need to be successful both in the classroom and in our remote school. Thank you for nurturing their mind, body and spirit through the engaging opportunities that you provide. Last school year when our schools closed due the COVID19, you found ways to connect with them and to continue to support them through various actions such as care pkgs, food programs, social media, the modified graduation celebrations and of course through the various platforms that you were using. We were all so proud of how resilient and creative you were and continue to be. Our students are better because of who their teachers are. Thank you for always going the extra mile for them.

On behalf of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board community, we thank you for putting our students first and helping us to achieve our vision of being leaders in learning and faith. You truly are amazing!

Recognizing our Custodial Staff for National Custodial Worker Appreciation Day!

October 2, 2020 is National Custodial Appreciation Day! It is a day to thank and appreciate each and every member of our custodial team including custodians, assistant custodians, cleaners, BSTs and maintenance staff! We are especially grateful for their efforts in helping us to prepare for our school reopening, and for their ongoing diligence in keeping our schools and buildings clean. Your efforts are helping to keep us all safe.

Every Child Matters: Sudbury Catholic Schools Honours Orange Shirt Day

Staff and students throughout the Sudbury Catholic District School Board joined hundreds of others across Canada by participating in Orange Shirt Day on Wednesday, September 30, 2020.

By wearing orange shirts, we recognize the harm the residential school system did to children’s sense of self-esteem and well-being and it serves as a symbol of our commitment to reconciliation. Since it began in 2013, the phrase “Every Child Matters” has been used as part of the movement to recognize the value of every child and for communities to come together.

“The Sudbury Catholic District School Board firmly believes that every child matters and as such we will continue to honour Orange Shirt Day year after year,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education. “We are committed to Truth and Reconciliation and we strive to find opportunities for our staff and students to come together in support of intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.”

Will you be one of June’s Contest Winners?

This month we are encouraging students to participate in the Daily Trivia Challenge from June 8th – June 19th,2020.

There are two category groups:
Elementary (Kindergarten to Grade 6)-Home Scavenger Hunt: Entry Form
and
Secondary (Grade 7 – Grade 12)- Skilled Trades Trivia Game : Entry Form

Each day, a trivia question or clue will be shared via social media encouraging students to record the answer or take the appropriate photo. There will be 10 days in total. Students will then submit all 10 correct answers on the appropriate Google Form on June 19th for a chance to win a prize.

Winners will be announced on social media on Monday June 22nd!
