Growing Young Minds in the Great Outdoors: Outdoor Learning in Kindergarten

Did you know that outdoor learning is a game-changer for young children? At Sudbury Catholic Schools we believe in providing students with meaningful experiences that foster both learning and well-being. Our kindergarten students at St. David recently had an exciting opportunity to take their classroom outdoors, exploring nature while developing essential physical literacy skills.

Led by Mr. Atkinson, this engaging outdoor activity encouraged students to connect with the environment, stay active, and develop important skills such as creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. Research shows that hands-on learning in natural settings enhances cognitive development, promotes physical health, and nurtures a lifelong appreciation for the world around us.

We extend our gratitude to our dedicated teachers for making learning both fun and enriching. Through outdoor exploration, we are shaping curious, confident, and resilient learners—one adventure at a time!

Sudbury Catholic Schools is proud to support innovative learning experiences that inspire young minds. Stay tuned for more exciting initiatives that help our students learn, grow and thrive!

Sudbury Catholic Hosts Outdoor Play Session for New Kindergarten Families

Sudbury Catholic Schools hosted a Family Outdoor Play session at Holy Trinity Catholic School on June 13, 2024. New Kindergarten students (beginning school in September 2024) and their families had the opportunity to immerse themselves in hands-on, outdoor experiences that they can bring to their own back yard this summer. The evening was a fun way to foster curiosity and connection with the natural world.  From exploring the flow of water to building ramps and runs, it was an evening of fun and learning in the great outdoors!

Small Hands, Big Impact: Pius XII Students Celebrate Earth Day with Schoolyard Cleanup

In honour of Earth Day, students at Pius XII, including those in the Full-Day Kindergarten program, are participating by picking up garbage in their schoolyard. Students wore protective gloves and disposed of the collected trash with the help of our educators. This initiative reminds us that no matter how small we are, we can make a big difference in protecting the environment by working together. By participating in such activities, we nurture meaningful lessons and discussions about the importance of sustainability and conserving natural resources for future learners.

Today, as we celebrate our beautiful planet, we reflect on how we can protect and preserve it for future generations. Every action counts, from reducing energy consumption, recycling, planting trees, cleaning our local neighbourhoods, or spending more time outdoors.

Thank you to Pius XII for nurturing an insightful lesson that will support their school community’s efforts to keep the planet clean and beautiful.

Predicting Spring: Groundhog Day Festivities in Kindergarten Classes

February 2nd is Groundhog Day! Some of our schools participated in activities this week to forecast what would happen.

At Holy Trinity Catholic Elementary School, Mrs. Yasko, Mr. Vicedomini, Ms. Julie, and Ms. Tamara’s Kindergarten class participated in an art activity where they constructed groundhogs while drafting their predictions on whether or not the groundhog would see his shadow.

Meanwhile, Miss Martel and Mrs. Meunier’s classes at Immaculate Conception School had a blast with a week full of Groundhog Day activities! Students enjoyed a Groundhog-themed pancake breakfast and crafted a prediction graph, “Will the Groundhog See His Shadow?” Most students predicted he would!

After much anticipation, the results are in – the groundhog did not see his shadow, which means spring is on its way early this year! Thank you to our schools for sharing their activities. We are excited to welcome spring with open arms!

Sudbury Catholic District School Board is excited to announce our upcoming virtual event “Transition to School,” designed to provide the support students need to take the next step in their learning journey!

From August 29-31st, students and families are invited to attend live, online presentations from various Sudbury Catholic teachers to help them prepare for a new chapter this fall. Each session will run twice throughout Aug 29-31. See below for session dates/times and click here to attend!

Additional Event Information

Kindergarten, Primary, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior teachers will cover essential topics during this event. By attending, you will learn what to expect as a new student, know what to do if you want to speak with a resource or guidance teacher, learn who the key people you should connect with and so much more! Sessions will also deliver simple strategies to help ease anxiety and teach essential organization skills to help support student success.

Getting ready to take the next step in any learning journey can be scary. Whether it’s the first day of kindergarten or the first day of grade 12, the transition to a new grade level should be smooth and worry-free. Because every child’s journey is unique, each presentation will focus on how to help students in that grade level prepare for Sept, so they can reach their full potential at school.” – Jennifer Connelly, St. Francis Principal
