COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream – Education Related Projects

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board would like to acknowledge that schools in SCDSB have received COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream – Education Related Projects (CVRIS-EDU) as part of Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).

The CVRIS-EDU funding is a federal and provincial program designed to help school boards promote occupant health and safety, improve facility conditions (e.g. optimize air quality), enhance physical distancing and facilitate distance learning.

In total, the CVRIS-EDU projects will support up to $656M in projects in school boards across Ontario. We are grateful for the support of both our federal and provincial partners in supporting our ongoing efforts to ensure safe and supportive learning environments for our students, staff and community.

Eligible expenditures under the program are those that will be incurred by school boards between February 2021 and December 31, 2021, and have been approved by the federal government.

The funds we received are being used to facilitate Ventilation Upgrades at the following schools:

  • St. Francis
  • St. John
  • St. Anne
  • St. Albert
  • St. Charles (elementary)
  • Bishop Alexander Carter C.S.S

Sudbury Catholic Staff Celebrate Board Wide Wellness Day!

Wellness is the quality or state of being healthy in mind, body and spirit – especially as the result of deliberate effort. It is seen as an approach to healthcare that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life, as opposed to emphasizing treating diseases.

Sudbury Catholic Schools staff put their wellness first by participating in a Board Wide Wellness Day! Staff were encouraged to complete a wellness activity throughout their work day that would help enhance their mind, body and spirit. From walking to yoga, indulging in a healthy lunch or trying meditation, the possibilities seemed endless!

Great job by all participants!

Students and Staff take a stand against bullying!

Staff and students wore their favourite pink shirts to celebrate #PinkShirtDay. Pink Shirt Day is celebrated each February to take a stand against bullying and promote inclusivity.

SPS Officer Cheryl Kennelly stopped in at Holy Trinity for a visit and a discussion with some of our students about why it is so important to spread kindness to others not only today, but every day.
St. James staff stood together to promote Pink Shirt Day.

SCDSB celebrates faith and wellness as a system!

All Sudbury Catholic District School Board staff gathered together on October 26 for the annual Faith PA day celebration! The day started with a Mass led by Bishop Marcel Damphousse. A Choir made up of SCDSB staff also joined in, providing us with many wonderful songs to complete our Eucharistic celebration. Following the Mass, Dr. Ian Manion, a psychologist and BellLetsTalk panelist, provided a thought-provoking and powerful presentation about the importance of mental health and wellbeing.

The afternoon consisted of break-sessions where staff were able to sign up for an activity. Sessions ranged from yoga and physical fitness activities, sports games, mental health and wellbeing talks and even an escape room!

We thank all staff who attended the day and fully embraced the theme of wellness, and all those who helped organize the days events and activities!

Dragons Training Around their Den

Students at St. David Catholic Elementary School have set a goal for themselves. They are going to become runners. Teacher Terri-Lynn Lapage issued a challenge to the grades 1-5 students to learn how to become runners and fifteen students have accepted this challenge. Twice a week this group – called the St. David Roaring Runners – as an homage to the school’s mascot, the dragon, can be seen and heard playing cooperative games, running around the block, and cheering each other on. Lepage’s hope is to get the students moving and fit all the while having fun. “The club promotes physical fitness for students and staff and encourages sportsmanship and a positive mental attitude,” Lepage stated. “It’s about supporting the whole person – mind, body and soul… and with the running club – the kids are getting that positive support.” The Roaring Runners are preparing for the Santa Shuffle on December 3rd and are busy collecting pledges to donate to the Salvation Army’s Women and Children’s shelter. All of the their progress is charted in a blog that Lepage has set up at http://groups.runforlife.ca/roaringrunners. “Running club is a place where all children (and teachers) can experience success. I can’t describe how great it feels to see students cheering each other on or proudly announcing that they ran 7 laps this practice instead of 3 or 4.” St. David principal Dawn Wemigwans is quite proud of Lepage and the students. “What a fantastic opportunity to promote wellness and healthy living for our students,” Wemigwans stated. “There is nothing better than seeing the kids running around the school, laughing and cheering, with great big smiles on their faces – that is what this club is all about.” Lepage and the Roaring Runners are issuing a challenge to all other schools and running clubs in Sudbury to start up similar clubs and match or even beat their donations. Lepage encourages others to go to her blog to find out more about the St. David Roaring Runners and says to expect to see them in fine form at their very first race, the Santa Shuffle, in December. “This race is only our first goal – the first step in a journey of healthy living for our St. David community.”

Sudbury Catholic Schools’ Employees Ride the Big Bike for Heart & Stroke

Sudbury Catholic District School Board “Holy Rollers” staff took on the challenge of riding the “Big Bike” to raise funds for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. On Friday afternoon, 20 of the Board’s employees mounted the monster bike and peddled through the streets of downtown Sudbury during hot and muggy weather. Spirits were high on the bike as SCS members rattled their noisemakers and waved to everyone as the peddled past them. Cheered on and encouraged by pedestrians and motorists alike, the SCDSB staff did their best to complete the route in record time and raise more than $1,900 for the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
Encouraged by the turnout, the fun and the camaraderie, Sudbury Catholic Schools will be back again next year with even a more impressive group.
