Marymount Academy student Elizabeth Urso elected President of ECBC

Elizabeth Urso, a grade 11 student at Marymount Academy and student trustee for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, attended the Annual General Meeting of the Ontario Student Trustees’ Association (OSTA). She was one of approximately sixty student trustees representing 1.9 million public and Catholic students in the province of Ontario. Several guest speakers spoke at this conference, including the Minister of Education, Kathleen Wynne.

During the executive council elections, Elizabeth was elected President of the English Catholic Board Council (ECBC). She is one of five voting members on OSTA’s executive council, and the first female president elected since the Board Council system was integrated into the OSTA’s constitution. This council works to represent the 1.9 million elementary and secondary students in the province of Ontario. The mission of OSTA is to improve education in consultation with the Ministry of Education, adult trustees, teachers, and stakeholders.

Elizabeth’s term as President of the English Catholic Board Council will commence August 1st, 2009. She will also continue to be the student trustee on the SCDSB for the 2009/2010 school year.

The Ontario Student Trustees Association will be moving into its tenth year in September, and hopes to continue to improve education for the 1.9 million students of Ontario.

Sudbury Catholic Board Supports United Way Centraide Campaign

The United Way Centraide received some additional support to its 2008-2009 fundraising campaign from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s unionized and non-union staff at a recent board meeting.

United Way Campaign Chair, Jim Thompson approached Paula Peroni, Chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board at the start of the campaign to become part of the United Way’s Campaign Cabinet team and to encourage Board members and staff to contribute to this year’s fundraising drive. Towards that end, the Board of Trustees passed a motion at the October meeting that would encourage all staff to contribute generously to this initiative. “OECTA Elementary Teachers, OECTA Secondary Teachers, Principals and Vice Principals, CUPE Members, Senior Administration, Secretaries, Board Support Staff, IT Staff and Managers will be asked to contribute a minimum of $2.00 per pay in order to assist in the ongoing support for programs that are presently in place at many Sudbury Catholic Schools,” stated Peroni. “It is incumbent upon us as leaders in the Catholic community to set an example and show our support for the United Way campaign and it is our goal this year to significantly increase the SCDSB’s staff participation rate.”

Since 1982, the United Way Centraide Sudbury and District has been raising funds for critical community needs. As one of the largest non-profit fundraisers of social and human services in the Sudbury community the United Way supports 60 programs and services designed to assist people in the City of Greater Sudbury.

The United Way Centraide collected a total of $ 2.2 million for the 2007-2008 campaign. This year’s goal is set at $2.4 million.

St. Andrew Catholic School Teacher Wins “Teacher of the Year” Award

Representatives from Scholar’s Choice visited St. Andrew Catholic School recently to present Junior Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Chantal Morin with the Teacher of the Year Award. Jeramy Sawyer, a student in her class, nominated her with a delightful picture and story that was scribed by his Mother.

Chantal and Jeremy were both awarded $200 gift certificates, while St. Andrew School was awarded a $100 gift certificate. As a bonus prize, the entire JK class will enjoy the celebration with a complimentary pizza party at lunch break on Monday, June 2, 2008.

Longtime Teacher, Vice-Principal and Principal Recipient of Sudbury Catholic Schools 2008 Chairperson’s Award

Each year the Sudbury Catholic District School Board presents its Chairperson’s Award to the individual that embraces Catholic values, demonstrates initiative and ingenuity and contributes positively to the lives of its students and staff. “Sharon Oliver, Principal of St. Paul The Apostle Catholic School is all of those things and more,” stated Sudbury Catholic Schools, Board Chair, George Middleton before presenting Mrs. Oliver with the Chair’s Award for 2008. The award was presented at the Board’s 25 Year Employee Recognition and Retirement Party held at Bryston’s on the Park during the last week of May.

Mrs. Oliver is well deserving of this award having been an exemplary teacher, vice-principal and principal for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board for more than thirty years. Her Catholicity is evident to all students, parents and staff that have had the good fortune and opportunity to meet or work with her. Her truly caring and compassionate nature is apparent daily, beginning with prayers during morning announcements to the spiritual way in which she leads liturgical celebrations of all kinds through her gift of song and words of praise.

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School is a recipient of the Childhood Enfance- Better Beginnings Better Futures Snack Program due to her efforts. The community is well informed of school events and frequently invited to join students and staff in the school gym for sit down Harvest Teas and Shrove Tuesday Pancake meals.

Mrs. Oliver has been involved in numerous committees and initiatives that champion the cause of Catholic Education over her many years as teacher, vice-principal and principal. As the chairperson of the NOCCC, (Northern Ontario Catholic Curriculum Cooperative) she continues to promote and encourage Catholic curriculum across Northern Ontario. She is a member of the CPCO (Catholic Principals Council of Ontario) Professional Development Committee and is also involved as the chairperson of the Liturgy Committee of her church.

SCDSB Proud Participant in Sudbury Elementary Volleyball League

St. Raphael, Marymount and St. Francis are proud participants in the Sudbury Elementary Volleyball League. The league includes more than 350 athletes and is in it’s 7th season. Boasting 19 girls’ teams in two divisions and 13 boys’ teams in a single division, the league develops Sudbury athletes throughout the area from all four local school boards.

Teams have competed over 4 Saturdays from the beginning of the school year, and at the end of league play going into playoffs SCDSB teams are ranked as follows:

Boys:
St. Raphael – 3rd
St. Francis – 6th

Girls Division 1:
Marymount A – 1st
St. Francis – 6th
St. Raphael – 10th

Girls Division 2:
Marymount B – 7th

The Sudbury Elementary Volleyball League is organized by Diables Sports Club – a non-profit organization. They take care of all scheduling, stats, hosting and other organizational duties.

St. Benedict Science Teachers and Laurentian Students Represent Ontario at National Science Competition

St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School students were treated to edge-of-their-seat action and suspense at the Ontario Iron Science Competition which was held at Science North on November 3, 2007. Bearing signs and banners, St. Benedict students cheered on two of their own science teachers, Mr. Aaron Barry and Mr. Michael Sipos, who were competing againstt another local and two Southern Ontario teams for the Ontario championship title.

The Iron Science Competition is held across Canada with the intention of increasing the appeal of science and scientific experiments to students and the general public. The goal was undoubtedly met as the crowd which consisted of both students and adults responded to the scientific displays with incredible enthusiasm. Each ten minute presentation was based on the “secret ingredient” in the human body. The teams were judged by a panel of scientists, teachers, and local media.

St. Benedict Catholic School teachers, Mr. Barry and Mr. Sipos, teamed up with two graduate students from the Laurentian University/Science North Science Communications program, Lisa Lambert and Brandi Chuchman. Together, they formed the “Ferral Nerds” and solved the baffling mysteries of the human body. The sinuses were explained through the use of a “Booger Cannon” and the steps of the Digestive System were demonstrated with a larger-than-life working model. Their presentation impressed the crowd and judges alike, and their supporters were delighted with their scientific antics. After lengthy deliberation, the “Ferral Nerds” were crowned the champions of the Ontario Iron Science Competition for their unparalleled originality, delivery, entertainment value, overall knowledge of scientific principals and general “nerdiness.” St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School received a Smart Board as the top prize which will benefit all students in the science classrooms.

The “Ferral Nerds” will represent the province at the National Iron Science Competition in Calgary, Alberta on November 22, 2007. The entire event will be webcasted live at 12:00 p.m. local time from www.ironscience.ca.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board would like to congratulate the “Ferral Nerds” on their excellent achievement in winning the Ontario Iron Science Competition and wish them the best of luck as they represent St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, Laurentian University, and Ontario on the national stage.

SCDSB Teacher Receives Best Practice Award

Rosanna Battigelli, a teacher at St. James Catholic School in Lively, has been awarded a Best Practice Award from the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) for an essay she wrote highlighting her teaching experiences dealing with loss, grief and healing, and the support systems she developed within the classroom and school setting. She also received a Best Practice Award in 2002, 2004 and 2005.

Rosanna’s writing has been published in a number of Canadian anthologies. In August 2006, she was awarded an Ontario Arts Council “Writer’s Works in Progress” Grant for her second novel. Out of 116 applicants, 14 writers were each awarded $12,000.

Rosanna plans to spend her summer relaxing, reading, researching and writing.

And the 2007 SCDSB Chairperson’s Award Goes To…

Maurizio Visentin, longtime teacher/guidance counsellor with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board was presented with the SCDSB Chairperson’s Award by Board Chair, Paula Peroni at the SCDSB’s annual 25 Year and Retirement Banquet held at Bryston’s on the Park on Thursday evening.

Mr. Visentin’s involvement with the Sudbury Catholic District Board began as a teacher for Marymount Academy from 1982 to 1996. He then moved to St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School as a teacher and later became the school’s guidance councillor. In her address to the audience, Mrs. Peroni listed numerous awards of recognition that
Mr. Visentin had received throughout his teaching career which included; the Bishop Reding Outstanding Teacher Award, the Partners in Peace Program Award, the Service Above Self Award, the Excellence in Leadership Award (on two separate occasions), a citation for his outstanding support with the Canadian Red Cross’ Respect Education Program and a nomination for the Premier’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

“Mr. Visentin is well deserving of this award,” stated Mrs. Peroni. “He lives and leads by example the Catholic School Graduate Expectations. He is a discerning believer, effective communicator, reflective, creative holistic thinker and a devoted family man. He promotes his secondary school in the most professional manner and that is why our secondary schools are held in such high regard in sports and academic circles in this city.”

Sudbury Catholic Board Recognized By United Way

Michael Cullen, Campaign Director for the United Way / Centraide presents Paula Peroni, Chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and Rossella Bagnato, Interim Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board with an Award of Recognition for the Board’s ongoing support for the United Way Campaign. For many years, the Board’s students and staff have continued to donate their time and efforts to raise funds for the United Way through events at individual schools and through the Payroll Deduction Plan.

The SCDSB and its family of schools have raised more than $6,500 for this year’s United Way / Centraide campaign.

The United Way / Centraide, together with its many volunteers and donors such as the Sudbury Catholic District School Board strives to build a healtheir and stronger community.
