Award Winning Creativity at Bishop ACCSS
Bradford Bourque and Scott Istvandi, two grade 11 students in teacher Steve Facchini’s Specialist High Skills Major ICT program at Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School, were announced the winners of the “Belanger Ford’s Filming for Funds!” contest at the Belanger Lincoln Ford Centre LTD Grand Opening on Friday, May 2nd, 2014 in Chelmsford. As entries for the contest, schools from around Greater Sudbury submitted 30-second videos intended to promote Belanger Ford in a unique an creative way. Bradford and Scott’s winning video featured a Ford truck that could bark, growl, and wag its antenna. As the prize, Bishop Carter received a cheque for $3000 towards promoting and improving creativity within the school, as well as a $500 celebratory lunch party. Much of the winnings will go towards enhancing the new 3D Game Development section of the SHSM program.
“Creativity does not have limits in my class.” says Facchini. “I teach my students everything: video, sound, special effects, 2D graphics, photography, 3D graphics and animation, web development, 3D game programming. If my students want to make a truck behave like a dog, then there would be nothing stopping them. Brad and Scott’s video is definitely proof of that. I’m extremely proud of their awesome work. And I definitely thank Belanger Ford for providing us with this amazing opportunity.”
Oui, On Parle Francais!
The French Immersion students in Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 at St. Bernadette Catholic School put their French speaking skills to the test during a recent trip to Wal-Mart to shop for ‘back to school’ items. The students have been working very hard in class to improve their second language skills. ‘I enjoyed myself a lot. I was very glad to experience speaking French in a real-life situation outside of the classroom!” said Meghan Danyluk, Grade 4.
Bruins Versus Habs at St. Paul
The normally cordial and family-like atmosphere at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School has been temporarily shattered with the imminent NHL playoff battle between the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadians. Staff and students are seen representing their colours and allegiances with the same intensity found in an NHL playoff series!! May the best team win!!!!
NATIONAL YOUTH ARTS WEEK: ROCK N’ ROBOTICS EVENT
The St. Benedicts Robotics team is hosting an event at Dynamic Earth this Saturday – May 3. We will be demonstrating the robot, in conjunction with Sudbury Youth Rocks Band, as part of National Youth Arts Week. This event will be streamed live across Canada, which is really exciting!
NATIONAL YOUTH ARTS WEEK: ROCK N’ ROBOTICS EVENT
National Youth Arts Week from May 1-7, 2014 provides an opportunity for young people across Canada to create a celebration of youth led events showcasing their talents, expressing and exchanging ideas, getting excited about the arts and celebrating their positive contribution to their communities and to Canada. From St. John’s, NFLD, to Vancouver, BC, and everywhere in between!
For the first time, Sudbury will be hosting their own events throughout the week. A highlight will be “Rock n’ Robotics”, an exciting event that will combine a rock band with mechanical robots and professional stilt walkers. It will be a great opportunity to witness the hard work of these youth led/engaged activities from the Sudbury Youth Rocks Band, RoBenedicts Robotics Team from First Robotics Canada, and the Myths and Mirrors’ Kazzzam Stilt Walking Performers.

Minister of Education Launches New Aboriginal Business Program at St. Charles College
A new pilot program was launched on Tuesday, April 29 at St. Charles College to help Aboriginal students develop business and entrepreneurial skills. Minister of Education Liz Sandals was on hand to reveal the details of the program as the province partners with the Paul Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative to support Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneurship.
The students will learn how to develop a business plan and create product or service based business.Jason Michelutti and Paola Gutscher will spearhead the grade 11/12 program at St. Charles College.
Gutscher says “the critical goal of the program is to improve attendance and increase student confidence levels.”Michelutti says he’s eager to get started and wants to get the students “thinking like business owners”.
About fifteen students are already enroled in the program which will commence September 2014.
Spring Is Popping Out All Over St. Anne
The Grade 2/3 students at St. Anne Catholic Elementary School in Hanmer are anxiously waiting for spring to arrive. They constructed some bird nests out of thread and sugar water. When they came back to school the next day, their nests had sprouted new life. What a great way to start the Easter season!
St. Charles Elementary School Volunteers Recognized as Champions for Children
On Wednesday, April 24, a special group of people from St. Charles Catholic Elementary were recognized for their dedication to the school. The 2014 Volunteer awards for the Champions for Children were handed out by Our Children Our Future at an awards celebration and the volunteers for the school’s snack program won the group award for this event.
Vice Principal, Laura Stirrett explained that several days a week, the group of volunteers come in to wash, prepare the snacks, serve them to the students and wash up afterwards. They know that having a nutritious start to the day will help the students succeed. While most students do come to school with some form of snack, their eyes light up when the volunteers arrive with trays of fruit, vegetables and crackers arranged with the loving touch of a mom. Thanks to their unwavering support students are moved from a potential disadvantage to an advantage. “At St. Charles School, we are very lucky to have a core group of volunteers who run our Healthy Snack Program! Running a program like this takes a real dedication to the well-being of our students” says David Soehner, Principal. “We are very fortunate to have this group of ladies volunteer at our school, which is why we nominated them for this award”.
One of the award recipients, Kristine Belanger explained,” It is all about the children, and making sure they are happy and fed. Not everyone is as fortunate to have enough to eat every day so it is wonderful to see how excited the kids get when they get to experience different foods and are happy because they have had something nutritious to eat!”
Bookie Monsters at St. John
After 7 months of preparation, The St. John’s “Bookie Monsters” are proud of their third place finish at The Battle of the Books Competition held on April 23rd at Tom Davies Community Centre in Lively. Furthermore, the team won the spirit award thanks to the quick thinking of Mrs. Roque, teacher and Bookie Monster parent, who created the team cheer on the spot! Coaches Mrs. Whitman and Mrs. Walker are very proud of James Roque, Ashley Ross, Lauren Carlson, Avery Hoffman, Madison Michalowicz, and Aidan Gardner.
