Students and Parents say Thank You to St. Bernadette Staff

In appreciation of all the staff at St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School, every single staff member was presented with a plaque of appreciation from the students and parents of the school community during Catholic Education week. Each teacher, the Principal and the school secretary, received their own personal plaque that described exactly why they were appreciated and cherished by the students of St. Bernadette and all of the comments and illustrations on the individual plaques were then collected and placed on a large plaque for the school to proudly display. The Catholic School Council members had secretly collected comments and artwork from the students describing why they loved their teachers.

St. Bernadette Celebrates Franco-Fun!

Grace Olive, Grade 2 student at St. Bernadette Catholic French Immersion School, proudly waves the Franco-Ontarian flag she created in honour of La Journee Internationale de la Francophonie on March 20, 2012. St. Bernadette celebrated this day by highlighting the French language and culture through a variety of educational activities including: dancing and singing along to traditional Francophone music, sampling home made culinary French treats like “la sucre a creme” and “les petes de soeurs”, and wearing green and white (the official colours of the Franco-Ontarian flag). The celebration ended in the gym with the students coming together to cheer, “Le francais est une chance!”

Friendship is flourishing at St. Bernadette Catholic School

During the month of February all the Sudbury Catholic Schools are celebrating the virtue of Compassion and at St. Bernadette they extended this theme on Valentine’s Day with their Fete de L’amitie (Friendship Feast). Every year the grade 5 and 6 students take on a leadership role and organize a series of fun-filled activities from obstacle courses to bowling and floor hockey for the JK and SK students to enjoy. Each student in the school is given a red heart-shaped lollypop to symbolize the love and friendship we have and show to all of our classmates and friends at school. One lucky boy and girl in each class gets to act as le roi et la reine (the king and queen) and they wear their special crowns for the entire day.

JK students at St. Bernadette French Immersion school, Kiley Laforest and Caleb Woods are le roi and la reine for the Fete de L’amitie (Friendship Feast) held every year on St. Valentine’s Day.

St. Bernadette Celebrates 100 Days of School

The students in the Grade 2 class at St. Bernadette Catholic School sported crowns on Friday, February 10, in honour of the 100th day of school. Superintendent Rossella Bagnato visited the students during their 100th day math lesson where students were able to use one of the new document cameras to interactively work through fun-filled math activities involving the number 100. The entire day was filled with a host of celebratory 100th day activities such as doing jumping jacks, skipping and hula hoop fun each for 100 seconds at a time!
“It was a very exciting way to tie in all of our learning successes to date with the 100th day of school!” stated teacher Jenny Aubin. “The students were enthusiastic and they are eagerly looking forward to the next 100 days of school”.

St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary Celebrates Family LIteracy Day

Did you know that just 15 minutes of reading with your child can improve his/her literacy skills? This Family Literacy day students at St. Bernadette Catholic School visited the New Sudbury branch of the Greater Sudbury Public Library for a very special Celebrity Story Hour. The students toured the library, received their very own library card, signed out their favourite selections and participated attentively while guest reader, City Councillor, Joscelyne Landry-ALtmann read to them. The students were encouraged to take home their book selections and read along with their families. Mme Perron, Grade 3/4 teacher stated that, “Visiting the library has been an excellent opportunity for students to explore the world of books and familiarize themselves with the many resources available for them and their families. Many have stated that they want to come back and bring their parents along!”

Fruity Fridays and Tasty Tuesdays at St. Bernadette

Students at St. Bernadette Catholic School always eagerly eat up all the nutritious offerings prepared and delivered by volunteers Gerda Weiss, Wendy Visneski and Henriette Waschuk.
Thanks to sponsorship through the Childhood Enfance program, St. Bernadette and many other Sudbury Catholic Schools regularly enjoy healthy snacks such as fresh fruit and tasty vegetables. Mrs Gerda Weiss, who has been actively involved with St. Bernadette for over 25 years as a parent, lunch supervisor and volunteer, stated that, “No matter what type of nutritious snack we prepare, it could be broccoli and cauliflower, the students always finish their serving and often ask for more!”

St. Bernadette Celebrates Christmas with Parish Partners

The entire school community of St. Bernadette Catholic joined together to rejoice in the true meaning of Christmas at their annual celebration held for the first time this year at St. Andrew the Apostle Church. Father Sam D’Angelo presided over the mass and the students sang wonderful Christmas hymns and performed a play entitled “Christmas Play for Children” which was also written by Father. The church was full of parents, grand-parents, relatives, friends and neighbours all gathered in prayer. Parent, Mr. Dan Bronicheski said, “The idea of joining together at our church to rejoice in Jesus’ birth is an excellent opportunity for the entire school community to pray together at this special time of year. This has been a spectacular event, certainly the best concert I have ever attended!” After the mass everyone attended a joyous social gathering in the church basement hosted by the Catholic School Council.
