St. David School Uses Cooking and Math to Teach Valuable Life Skills

Authentic experiences that allow students to make real life connections will help them to grasp general mathematical principles and will help develop future math success.

At St. David Catholic School, the Intensive Support Facilitator, Lynsie Royer, leads a bi-weekly math focused cooking club for students in Grades 3 – 6.  Each week, students receive a recipe and a math learning goal.  Each weekly goal is connected to the Ontario math curriculum.  For example, doubling ingredients in recipes, inquiring about ratios and the favourite of most students, using division to share the delicious treats equitably.

“The after-school math and cooking club is hands down the most rewarding educational experience of my career,” said Lynsie Royer, Intensive Support Facilitator at St. David Catholic School. “It joins my two passions – math and cooking and my enthusiasm for both of these activities has transferred to the students.  We have lots of fun, laugh a lot, eat a lot and learn a lot.”

The School is proud to not only support the math curriculum in this extracurricular opportunity, but also to help develop a life skill that will ensure student success in the kitchen.

“Cooking Club is super fun.  Before cooking club, I really didn’t understand how to divide but Miss Royer taught me how using chocolate chips and measuring them into cups.  It turned out that I could divide and it was actually easy,” exclaimed Grade 3 student Ethan Webb.

St. David School is looking forward to continuing this new and exciting initiative in the upcoming 2017-2018 School Year.

Cards Raise Over $21,000 During Relay for Life Event!

The St. Charles College Cardinal Relay Committee presented a cheque of more than $21,000 to the Canadian Cancer Society during their annual Relay for Life event.
Lead organizers, Jennifer Humphrey and Krystal Rewega are looking forward to next year. Principal Patty Mardero says “it doesn’t matter what goal is set for the Cards, they always have a way of meeting and also exceeding their target which is a true testament to their character and strength.”

Popular radio personality DJ G-Rant of The New HOT 93.5 led the troops early Tuesday with an inspirational speech highlighting his own personal battle with the disease. He encouraged the students to give blood when they are the legal age to do so. He also inspired the students to think about their legacy in the world long after they are gone. He also participated in the highly emotional Survivor’s lap – where students, parents, grandparents and staff members who are fighting cancer walked together in unity with all other students following suit as their allies and supporters.

The day-long event featured water balloons, bucket drops, lots of music and entertainment, yoga, Zumba and many other activities to keep the students motivated and having fun throughout the day.

Students Complete Outer Space Tomato Seeds Experiment!

When do tomatoes taste absolutely out of this world? Ms. Visentin’s Gr. 2 students at Holy Cross Elementary School will soon find out. The children put their green thumbs to work by conducting a tomato seed experiment with two sets of tomato seeds. One package of seeds had been placed on a space station for a period of six weeks while the second package of seeds remained on Earth. The students had to predict which tray of plants had been exposed to outer space, prior to their germination. Every morning, the class leader collected data by counting the number of plant germinations and then watered them. Close observations were made by the children with the use of magnifying glasses to see if one set of seedlings appeared to grow differently than the other. The children will soon find out which were actually the “space seeds”. Our Grade 2 scientists will then bring the plants home to see if they produce “out of this world” tomatoes over the summer break.

Junior Girls at Immaculate Feel Empowered

Constable/Author Halley Willmott came to speak to the grade 5 and 6 girls about feeling empowered. Constable Willmott shared her personal journey while growing up and how she struggled to fit socially since she moved from school to school. As a result of that, Constable Willmott said that she found a love for reading and writing which led her to becoming a published author on top of being a police officer. Her message to the girls was that they all have gifts, talents and interests that they should embrace and that they are all valued and unique individuals.
