Talent Beats Experience

This year’s Marymount Junior Regals Volleyball team began the season with little experience, a ton of talent and team spirit that was unrivalled. The team competed in numerous tournaments making it to the championship finals in four of six tournaments and capturing two Championships; the Champlain Tournament and the Cardinal Classic.

The Marymount Regals completed the regular season with an impressive 8-1 record to finish first in a very competitive field of ten teams. In addition, they defeated their toughest opponent, the Lasalle Lancers, in a close and exciting semi-final match to earn a spot in the City Championship. The Junior Regals represented Marymount Academy in a city volleyball championship for the 5th consecutive year.

The Lo-Ellen Knights would match up againstt the Regals in the final and were determined to beat the favoured Marymount Academy team. The Regals came out in the first set and showed the Knights they would have to play their best ball to bring down the young Regal squad as they were defeated 25 – 8. The Regal magic would continue as they dominated the match defeating Lo-Ellen in 3 straight sets to capture the coveted Division 1 Junior City Volleyball Championship.

Congratulations to the Junior Regals!

Local Author Visits St. Benedict Catholic School

Local doctor and author, Dr. Sean Costello visited St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School to speak to the students regarding the creative writing process and his new novel Here After.

Sean Costello is a master of the poignancy of everyday living. “Here After,” (his sixth novel) Dr. Costello tackles a difficult subject with wit and humanity-and a couple of really good scares. It’s a father and son story that will touch your heart.” (author Susie Moloney)

While researching this novel, Sean learned of organizations like Child Find and the role they play in the process of returning missing children to their families. In honour of that role, he has decided to donate all personal proceeds from the novel to Child Find.

Dr. Costello addressed the Grade 11 and 12 students at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School and encouraged them to read and write as much as possible if their long term career goal is to be an author. “The more you write, the easier it gets,” Costello told the students.

Dr. Costello is also an anesthesiologist and writes novels on a part time basis as more of a hobby. Costello also urged the young aspiring writers to take in writing conventions as much as possible to meet the agents and publishing companies.

Dr. Costello’s other works include Eden’s Eyes, The Cartoonist, Captain Quad and Finders Keepers.

Sudbury Catholic Board Places Schools in East Planning Area Under Review

In accordance with its Pupil/School Accommodation Review Regulation BR 10, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is in the process of conducting an Accommodation Review for its family of schools situated in the East Planning Area. Sudbury Catholic Schools Director of Education, Catherine McCullough will recommend an action plan to Trustees at a special Board Meeting in May 2010.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is committed to providing a full range of educational opportunities equitably distributed across a broad and diverse geographical area. Due to ever-changing factors such as mobile population, changes in funding, new legislation, changing in educational objectives, community aspirations and physical limitations of buildings, the Board is obligated to monitoring and evaluating all schools on a regular basis.

Given the present state of its priorities, the Board will be focussing its attention on the East Planning Area for the purpose of this Accommodation Review which will include the following schools;

Elementary:
Pius XII Catholic School
St. Andrew Catholic School
St. Bernadette Catholic School
St. John Catholic School
St. Mark Catholic School
St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School
St. Raphael Catholic School

Secondary:
St. Charles College
St. Albert Adult Learning Centre

The School Accommodation Review may result in such changes as boundary adjustments, major additions, renovations and alterations to school buildings, blending or twinning arrangements for school organization and/or programs or school consolidations

The Board is in the process of informing parents, staff, school councils, and school communities of the logistics and time lines regarding its Accommodation Review. The Sudbury Catholic District School Board has hired the firm of Waston and Associates Economists Ltd. (one of Canada’s leading economic firms) to prepare population, household, employment and student enrolment forecasts in the City of Greater Sudbury and more specifically in the planning area of the schools under review. This information will greatly assist the Sudbury Catholic District School Board in assessing opportunities for long term growth and development and help guide the Board in the implementation of accommodation strategies that will serve to enhance student learning.

Accommodation Review Committees (ARC’s) will be created to provide the Sudbury Catholic District School Board with information re School Valuation Framework and applying this framework to the schools under review, giving consideration to the value of the students, community, school board and the local economy.
