Parents visit St. Paul for Family Literacy Day

Mme Wright’s grade 2/3 French Immersion class invited parents to participate in some Family Literacy Day activities.

There were four different activities set up. The first was a read-aloud of the book entitled “The Book With No Pictures” by B.J. Novak. Everyone soon discovered that a book does not have to have illustrations for it to be a fun and entertaining read. The Book With No Pictures left everyone in giggles – especially when it was read by the adults!

The second station had the students share the books they created using the Book Creator App on the iPads. Students also taught the guests how to legally copy images from the internet to use in their own writing. They wrote their own riddles and knock-knock jokes at the next center. Finally, at the fourth station, they had some fun playing Bananagrams and Scrabble, two “word creating” games.

Afterward, the guests joined the students in their classroom for lunch. What a wonderful way to celebrate Family Literacy Day!

Hockey Sweater Spirit Day

The staff and students of St. Andrew School donned their Hockey jerseys on Friday January 16 to celebrate their annual Hockey Sweater Spirit Day. Over the years the students and staff have become very competitive especially when it comes to favourite teams. Pictured are Tomasso Deni and Mrs. Henry who are very loyal to their favourite teams of Boston and Montreal.

The winners from the competition go to the next level of the Championship being held at Marymount College in February.

Many thanks to the Knights for hosting the competition at St. Raphael School.

Core French students at St. Raphael learn about goal setting

At St. Raphael school, Mme Rocca’s Core French students from grades 4-8 learned about goal setting. They were taught that a goal is only words on paper unless a plan is devised to help achieve the goal. Students were asked to trace their hands and write down a goal as well as the steps they will take to meet that goal.

St. Francis Flames Melt Away Winter Blues with a Hawaiian Day

On January 9 students at St. Francis school participated in their very own Hawaiian day celebration. Students showed great spirit as they dressed up in Hawaiian shirts, straw hats and hula skirts. The sound of Hawaiian music welcomed students out of the cold weather as they arrived to school. The students were awarded the Hawaiian day as a result of reaching their canned food drive goal last December. St. Francis Flames donated over 3 000 cans for the Edgar Burton Food Drive which will help many families in the Sudbury community.

St. Andrew community enjoys Christmas mass together

Staff, students and families in the St. Andrew community enjoyed a beautiful Christmas Mass interspersed with beautiful song on Thursday December 18th. Father Sam opened his parish church of St. Andrew the Apostle to everyone so that we could enjoy our last Christmas Concert for St. Andrew School. The choir began the celebration by singing Rejoice and Sing the Good News and everyone did just that. The FDK children sang It’s Christmas Day, the SK/1 children sang Hush There’s a Baby, Grade 2 performed the Huron Carol, Grade 3/4 sang Drummer Boy and Mary Had a Baby and finally the Grades 4/5 and 5/6 classes joined voices to sing I Saw Three Ships and Something About Christmas. Pictured are the three Kings presenting gifts to the baby as the grade 2 class sang the Huron Carol.

Students cut their hair for cancer

The Christmas Spirit was in full bloom at Immaculate Conception School in December. Emily Lotter, Grade 1 and Morgan Bradley, Grade 4, teamed up to do something very special – cut their hair for cancer. The girls didn’t stop the “giving” with the donation of their hair. They also raised $1002.35 from the sale of their handmade angel ornaments to their school, families and many community organizations. The girls have each chosen Canadian organizations to donate their hair and money. Emily has chosen to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths and Pediatric Cancer Research and Morgan has chosen to donate to Angel Hair for Kids.
Many thanks go out to all who supported the girls. Immaculate Conception Cougars rock!
