St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School celebrated Catholic Education week with a Faith Based Play Day. Each classroom teacher and the Core French teacher lead the teams of children in faith based activities. There was singing, creating a story, forgiveness melts a frozen heart activity , love letters, the parable of the Good Samaratin and discussion of the miracles of Jesus. Connecting with Community Partners at St. John
During Catholic Education Week, St. John Catholic Elementary School students in Mrs. Vendramin’s grade 1 social studies class enjoyed a visit from Constable Coluzzi. The police officer was asked to answer some questions that the students developed together before having an opportunity to sit in the Greater Sudbury Police’s brand new dodge charger. Students learned the value of having police officers as one of our community partners.
Exploring Paths of Joy at St. Charles Elementary
To prepare for this year’s Catholic Education Week theme, “Exploring Paths of Joy”, St. Charles Catholic Elementary School students created their own unique footprint to symbolize their personal journey within our school community. The footprints were put together by Mme Bouzane’s class to make a giant quilt!
Students in all grades enjoy walking past the mural to admire the many patterns and designs and to find their own!
Planting Seeds of Joy at St. John
During Catholic Education Week at St. John Catholic Elementary School, Mrs. Gionet’s grade 1/2 class enjoyed listening to the book “The Tiny Seed” before having the opportunity to plant some flowers and vegetables with trustee Nancy Deni.
Singing in Celebration at St. Bernadette
The St. Bernadette Catholic School Choir, led by Mme Begic, practice a song over the morning announcements. They performed for the Catholic Youth Day mass celebrated at St. Andrew the Apostle Church. They sang the theme song for Catholic Education Week, “Exploring Paths of Joy.”
Mental Health Week – May 4-10, 2015
Despite the fact that mental health concerns affect one in five young people, fewer than
25 percent of children and youth with mental health problems receive treatment. The
biggest reasons for this are a lack of understanding and a fear of being stigmatized or
negatively perceived by others.
In Ontario, May 4-10, 2015 is declared Children’s Mental Health Week. This week is
about increasing mental health awareness, decreasing stigma, and increasing
knowledge about available help. Sudbury Catholic Schools would like to take this
opportunity to extend awareness of mental health and our board’s Mental Health and
Well-Being Strategy to students and parents.
Each of our schools will be provided with information cards and magnets to send home
with each student, highlighting the SCDSB Mental Health and Well-Being Strategy and
the website portal. Through these resources parents can become more aware of child
and youth mental health, gain knowledge of our board’s efforts, and have access to
resources.
Schools with students in grade 7+ will also receive posters to display throughout their
hallways and classrooms. By showcasing these posters, we are de-stigmatizing mental
health and creating a safe and accepting environment in our schools that is proven to
influence student well-being and improve conditions for learning.

St. Charles College Presents: Aida
In the heart of ancient Egypt a love story blossoms between a couple of star crossed souls mates. Radames, an Egyptian warrior, falls in love with the slave girl Aida, who is in fact the strong-willed princess of Nubia. With a plot to kill the Pharaoh and Radames’ wedding to the Pharaoh’s daughter at hand, both he and Aida must choose between duty to their people or their own love. Their beautiful and heartfelt journey, fantastic music by Elton John, dancing, lavish costumes and set are sure to capture the hearts of audience members of all ages!! St. James Junior Basketball Team Captures Gold
Congratulations to the St. James Catholic Elementary School Junior Basketball A Team that captured the Gold Medal in last weekend’s SCDSB Tournament. St. James players won both the male and female Most Valuable Player Awards of the tournament. Congratulations to Allie Weiler and Sam MacGillivary.
This is the second gold title captured this season by the team! Thank you to Coach, Mr. Denomme, Niki Denomme and school representative Ms. Denomme.
The St. James Junior Basketball B Team coached by Sarah Denomme also participated in the tournament and did very well.

Staff and Students at St. Charles Pray the Living Rosary to Kick Off Catholic Education Week
The St. Charles Catholic Elementary school community came together to pray the Living Rosary to kick off Catholic Education Week 2015. Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 made up the individual beads of the rosary, surrounding the remaining students with the peaceful prayer.
The word rosary means “crown of roses”. Our Lady has revealed to several people that each time they say a Hail Mary they are giving Her a beautiful rose and that each complete rosary makes Her a crown of roses. The Holy Rosary is considered a perfect prayer because within it lies the awesome story of our salvation. With the rosary, in fact we meditate the mysteries of joy, of sorrow and the glory of Jesus and Mary. It’s a simple prayer, humble so much like Mary. The heavenly Mother has invited us to say the Rosary as a powerful weapon againstt evil, to bring us to true peace.
