Sudbury Catholic Schools receive 13 awards at the Regional Science Fair

The Sudbury Regional Science Fair took place at Laurentian University on April 6-7.

24 students represented the Board from six different schools: St.Anne School, St. James School, St. John School, St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, St. Charles College and Marymount Academy. The students presented 17 projects in total and showed passion and enthusiasm for each one!

Sudbury Catholic Schools earned 13 awards throughout the fair. Board results are as follows:

Sudbury Catholic Schools staff and students participate in Hour of Code!

All week our staff and students have been working together to complete coding activities during the #HourOfCode! The Hour of Code is an internal event that occurs in December which promotes coding in schools and Board. Board staff and educators were able to put their coding skills to the test and help our students achieve a new way of learning to code! 

Cards Customs makes their mark!

Cards Customs T-shirt shop is more then just an ordinary elective course for students at St. Charles College. This innovative in school business is flourishing this year with coop students collaborating together with teacher, Gregg Kolodinski to create and design logos for men and women’s apparel for sports, clubs and school spirit swag for many of our schools at Sudbury Catholic District School Board. 

Cards Customs established a community partnership with Kevin Roetscher, owner of HMR Branding here in Sudbury, which has opened the eyes of students to the value in learning business skills when they move on to post-secondary or the workplace once graduated.

This has given at risk students in the Open Doors program every opportunity to highlight their hidden talents, to engage in a hands on learning experience and be apart of a school wide project that is growing with interest. Co-op students are using their web design and marketing skills to develop fun and unique apparel, while seeking part time job opportunities.

Student’s testimonials justify the level passion and engagement in this new initiative at St. Charles College with the following statement.

Sudbury Catholic Schools take over LEGO Tournament

We wish to congratulate all students who participated in the City-wide First LEGO League tournament at Science North on Saturday, December 1. The schools of Holy Cross, Holy Trinity, St. Anne and St. James represented Sudbury Catholic Schools well at the tournament! We thank the students, their dedicated coaches and community sponsors who have helped grow the program over the years. Congratulations on an amazing effort by all! 

First ever STEM Olympics sees Holy Cross taking the gold!

The first ever STEM Olympics event was held today at St. Benedicts for some lucky Olympians from Holy Cross and St. Francis schools.

The event was organized by teacher, Loretta Cuda and involved four rotations – involving structures, catapults, boat construction and trivia.The morning began with Student Council President Adriana Cimino handing the opening ceremonies complete with the National Anthem. 

Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to students with the gold medals going to the “Black Bears” team of John Cunningham-Dunlop, Nicholas Bodnar, Summer Bayer and Samuel Grossi at Holy Cross. 

Learning Program at Sudbury Catholic Schools continue to benefit students during summer months!

Students at Sudbury Catholic Schools completed another year of summer learning last month! 95 students between Kindergarten and Grade 5 completed the three-week Summer Learning Program at St. Francis School from July 9 to July 27.

The students were divided into six classrooms, and included a numeracy and literacy session as well as a literacy and indigenous education session. Along with the six classroom teachers, there were also 12 robotics literacy tutors and eight Focus on Youth Camp counsellors present, providing a full educational team to provide rich learning opportunities for participating students.

Students were able to use the latest in technology to enhance their learning. Students learned the basics of robotics and practised their numeracy skills by using Ozo Bots, Dash bots, and other coding activities. Students worked on their literacy skills through a reading computer program called Lexia. New this year, the group also completed a Lego challenge design which was a great success.
As in past years, each morning began with a 30-minute session of Taekwondo, which helped to energize students and build confidence so that they were ready to learn. To encourage parent involvement, coffee chats were held each Wednesday covering topics ranging from tips to a successful school year and the ABCs of mental health.
The Board is thrilled with student participation in this year’s Summer Learning Program.
“It always amazes me to see what our youngest learners are able to achieve with the right opportunities, tools and support,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “Students participating in this year’s camp were able to keep the learning going over the summer, participate in something new and have fun while doing it! The growth and results that come out of the program are a testament to the wonderful staff that help to make this camp such as success each and every year!”

The Summer Learning Program is a Ministry funded program which aims to continue literacy and numeracy learning for students in the summer months in fun and engaging ways.

St. Benedict students are embracing the universal language of coding!

Grade 7 & 8 students are using their creative and fluid minds in the new coding room that they call their very own. Students have been working with different fun coding gadgets like Sphero’s, Code Gamers, Cyber Robots and Lego Mind Storm kits. A couple of our grade 8 students participated

Coding is a form of digital literacy, which is useful in everyday life. St. Benedict students are learning many traits and cognitive skills like perseverance, computational thinking, logic and problem solving while participating in the coding club.

Wil Pudapakkam is a grade eight student. He says “If you know how to code you can make apps, games and websites, which essentially entertains students and makes them happy.”

Another grade 8 student named Tyler Smith says “As the world get’s more technologically advanced, coding becomes more essential in getting a job, as there are more opportunities these types of fields.”

Our students participated in a presentation/workshop put on by the YMCA that is designed to help bridge the gap between youth in underrepresented groups and provide the digital skills that are critical to economic participation. The pilot will focus on building digital literacy skills, enabling participating youth, aged 12-16 roughly, to build a foundation for future engagement in STEM careers and the digital economy. Many of our students will be participating in the free 8-12 week program, which will run at the beginning of June at the YMCA.

Students’ in Mrs. Bock’s Language Arts class at St. Charles College Elementary were Skyping today.

They recently developed a soundtrack for the book by author Paul Toffanello, “Popchuck’s Revenge”. They had to find songs that connected to the story they read.

The top selections were presented by Skype to the author who hails from Timmins. Toffanello is now sharing the music selections with his movie producers!

Toffanello visited the students earlier in the school year to work with them on writing for a purpose. At the time, he shared the first eight chapters of his latest novel. He’s a former English teacher, Principal and Director of Education.

Secondary Students IGNITE their Math and Computer Skills with latest Technology!

Students at St. Charles College participated in the first annual IGNITE Technology Fair! Secondary Students have been incorporating math and computer schools with the newest technology to create more interactive and advanced projects and assignments. Technology includes the use if Green Screen, 3D Printers, Ozobots, Sphere-O and much more! All technology is now available in Secondary Learning Hubs.
