St. Benedict Student, Andrew Kilby, Signs Commitment Letter with University of Waterloo

Andrew Kilby, student at St. Benedict C.S.S is taking his love of football to the next level! The 18 year old student signed his letter of commitment to play football with the University of Waterloo. Andrew completed the signing alongside his coach, Kim Labrosse.

“It’s something I have been working toward for a really long time, and it feels amazing to be here in this moment!” said Andrew Kilby. “Coach Labrosse has helped me so much throughout the years. He has made me a better player.”

In addition to his passion and talent for football, Andrew will be completing an undergrad in Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo. As a proud St. Benedict Bear, Andrew feels that the school helped prepare him for the future.

“St. Benedict is a school full of high achieving students – the teachers here really helped push me to the next level. I even had the opportunity to take a kinesiology course in Grade 11. I truly believe St. Benedict made me a better athlete and student and I feel very prepared for the next stage in both aspects” said Andrew.

Coach Kim Labrosse is very proud of everything that Andrew has accomplished.

“Academically, Andrew achieves what St. Benedict stands for. He will be an excellent addition to the University of Waterloo in that sense. When it comes to football, his work ethic is one of the best I have ever seen. He knows how to work hard, and he comes from a family that has taught him to be gracious and humble.”

“When we as coaching staff can help a student continue their dream, then we know we have done our job.” he adds.

2020 NHL draft history in the making for St. Charles College

The 2020 NHL draft has been a week of dreams coming true for three former St. Charles College students.

Three SCC students were drafted this week leading with Quinton Byfield who made history for the Sudbury Wolves franchise as the highest draft pick in Wolves history with a 2nd overall selection by the LA Kings.
Next came Jack Thompson who was drafted in the 3rd round by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

And the third draft made for a hat trick with Isaak Phillips being drafted in the 5th round to Chicago.

It’s history in the making for the players and the school says Athletic Director and Lead of the Hockey Skills Academy Darren Michelutti.
Michelutti says “With Sudbury Wolves students attending St. Charles College, the Hockey Canada Skills Academy has had the opportunity to learn and work with elite athletes like Quinton, Jack and Isaak. The students enrolled in the program get a firsthand experience to see that hard work pays off and dreams really to come true when you commit to your passions.”

Next year, another student/player Chase Stillman will be a 2021 NHL Prospect.

Michelutti has been building the Academy at the school for the past three years. Currently there are ninety-five students enrolled in the program.

St. Charles College students and staff excited for the return of World Junior Champion and fellow Card

Students and staff at St. Charles College will have to wait a little longer to see fellow Cardinal Quinton Byfield and his gold medal from the World Junior Championships.

After accepting his gold medal, he left the Czech Republic and returned to his hometown of Newmarket. He will soon reunite with the Sudbury Wolves briefly before departing for the CHL Top Prospect game along with fellow St. Charles student Jack Thompson. This game showcases the top NHL Draft eligible talent from across the OHL, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the Western Hockey League with hundreds of scouts in attendance.

Kristy Hebert, who teaches Byfield says: “It has been an unbelievable opportunity to have such a talented athlete in our school and community. Quinton has added so much to our programs, bringing a plethora of hockey knowledge and skill. As part of the Leadership class, he has mentored Mrs. Fowke’s Grade 1 students at Holy Trinity Elementary school as well as here at St. Charles College in our Life Skills program. He has made many connections to students and has been an outstanding role model; we couldn’t be more pleased for Quinton and his recent success at the World Juniors!”

The students at Holy Trinity are also eager for his return. It shared messages on social media wishing him luck at the World Junior Championships just before the holidays.

Marymount Academy wins 7th Consecutive City Championship!

A number of years back after Marymount won their 2nd consecutive title it was written that they still had a long way to go to match the impressive win streak of another local high school which stood at 6 in a row. That journey was completed on Friday night as the Marymount Regals edged out the Confederation Chargers 7-1 to earn their unprecedented 7th consecutive flag football championship.

After Confederation kicked a 1-point rouge to begin the fourth quarter, the Regals offense took charge and held the ball for the next eleven minutes of the quarter, completing the impressive drive with an Allie Weiler handoff to full back Carlie Parker from the 3-yard line straight into the end zone. Allie Weiler kicked a successful PAT and left only 54 seconds on the clock.

After a couple of threatening plays the Regals’ defense, coached by Jason Weiler, and had five shutouts in eight games, shut the door and secured the incredible win. Marymount had an impressive 27 game win streak dating back to 2014 that Confederation halted with a 1-0 win over the Regals two weeks ago in their regular season matchup. Head coach Dan Bartolucci explained

“We were disappointed after the loss to Confed. a couple of weeks ago, but we weren’t crushed. Confed. is a fantastic team, a team that forces us to be better. We learned a lot from that game, made some adjustments, and really worked hard in practice this past week. The Marymount and Confederation flag football rivalry is arguably the best rivalry in high school sports. There us a huge level of mutual respect on both teams. I could not be happier for each of our coaches, players, parents, staff, and alumni that have been supporting us with great numbers at each of the games this season. The crowd noise and energy at James Jerome on Friday night will be remembered by many for a long time.”
