St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School Celebrates “Bully Busters Day”

As part of their anti-bullying program, students at St. Paul the Apostle inaugurated the “Bully Busters” team into their school.

Lead by the school’s student parliament and Mrs. Lee, (teacher), the student body prepared rap songs, poster contests and messages about bullying for their February12th, “Bully Busters Day.”

Throughout the day students participated in anti-bullying and bullying awareness activities. Special guests from the community were also invited to take part in the “Bully Busters” presentations.

Local Author, Dr. Sean Costello to Speak to St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School Students

On Monday, February 23, 2009, local doctor and author Dr. Sean Costello will visit St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, 2993 Algonquin Road from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. to speak to the students re the creative writing process and his new novel ‘Here After’.

Sean Costello is a master of the poignancy of everyday living. Here After, (his sixth novel) Dr. Costello tackles a difficult subject with wit and humanity-and a couple of really good scares. It’s a father and son story that will touch your heart.” (author Susie Moloney)

While researching this novel, Sean learned of organizations like Child Find and the role they play in the process of returning missing children to their families. In honour of that role, he has decided to donate all personal proceeds from the novel to Child Find.

St. Anne Catholic School Enters into Unique Videoconferencing Partnership with Science North

St. Anne Catholic School has entered into a unique partnership with Science North in piloting an in-class videoconference session. Mr. Thomson’s grade 6 class will participate in piloting the Science North video conferencing school program “Predators and Prey” on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 from 12:35-1:55 p.m.

Grade 6 students will utilize newly installed Smartboard technology in the classroom to conduct a videoconference with a Bluecoat from Science North. The program Science North is presenting is Predators and their Prey. It is a program suitable for grades 4 to 6 but has specific curriculum links in grades 4 and 6. The videoconference will be approximately 50 minutes in duration. The program includes a Science North science kit containing animal skulls, skeletons, tracks, etc.

This videoconference provides the students with not only a “one of a kind hands on learning experience” but also demonstrates how the use of technology can foster creative and unique partnerships in the Sudbury community

Marymount Academy Students Kick Off Heart and Stroke Campaign

Marymount Academy will be kicking off the start of its Heart and Stroke campaign on Friday, February 20, 2009 . Representatives from the Marymount Catholic Charities Council (MC3) and the Heart and Stroke Foundation will be in attendance to help raise awareness for the kick off.

Marymount Academy will host a school skating/sliding day at Queen’s Athletic Field. Students wishing to take part in these activities will be asked to make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The school has already received donations from local Sudbury businesses who are helping to sponsor the event. These proceeds will also go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Special guests such as the Chief of Police, Ian Davidson, staff from the City of Greater Sudbury Fire Department, and a young girl who has been affected by heart disease, will join Marymount students for the kick-off to the Heart and Stroke campaign.

Bishop Carter Catholic Secondary School Students to Canvass for the Heart and Stroke Campaign Wednesday, February 18, 2009

Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School students will be canvassing for the Heart and Stroke Foundation during the evening of February 18, 2009. As part of the Foundations Heart and Stroke Awareness Month, students have been actively engaged in recruiting other students to go out that evening in their neighbourhood to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Money raised will go toward funding research and other programs which are of vital importance to the health of the Sudbury community. Bishop Carter staff will be providing the students with pizza and hot chocolate to help keep them warm when they return to the school on what could prove to be a cold winter’s night.

If students are unable to take part in the fundraising blitz on the night of February 18, they are still being encouraged to choose an evening in February that best suits them and to fundraise on that evening. Also half of the proceeds of the school’s dress down day in February will go to the Heart and Stroke foundation.

School Buses, St. Benedict C.S.S. Open House, SDSSAA games cancelled today due to weather

Please be advised that due to weather conditions, the St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School Open House scheduled for tonight Tuesday, February 10 has been cancelled and will be rescheduled to Tuesday, February 17, 2009.

School buses have been cancelled and schools remain open.

According to SDSSAA rules, whenever school buses are pulled off the road, all SDSSAA games are called off. Accordingly, all games scheduled for today will be postponed and rescheduled in the not-too-distant future.

Led by the school’s student parliament and Mrs. Lee, (teacher), the student body has been preparing rap songs, poster contests and messages about bullying. On Thursday,February 12, 2009, St. Paul Catholic School will be celebrating a “Bully Busters Day.”

Throughout the day students will be participating in anti-bullying and bullying awareness activities. The school has also invited special guests to join them such as Denise Fraser from the Greater Sudbury Police Force, police and her son, Marc Fraser, who oversees the Echo program for the Childrens’ Aid Society

Xstrata Nickel makes a difference at two Sudbury Catholic Schools

On behalf of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and St. Anne and St. James Catholic Schools, we would like to thank Xstrata Nickel Company for their generous gift of $881.00 for the purchase of two full goalball kits. Their commitment to helping develop the sport of goalball in our schools is sincerely appreciated.

Goalball is a team sport designed for blind athletes but can be played by sighted athletes as well. It is an established Paralympic sport.

Participants compete in teams of three, and try to throw a ball that has bells embedded in it, into the opponents’ goal. They must use the sound of the bell to judge the position and movement of the ball. Blindfolds allow partially sighted and sighted players to compete on an equal footing with blind players.

SWAT Teams Descend on Sudbury Catholic Schools

SWAT Teams are alive and well at Sudbury Catholic Schools…SWAT (Students Who Assist Technology) launched this new and exciting initiative at the Board’s Catholic Education Centre.
Forty students from eleven of the Board’s schools participated in a one-day session with the TIM Teachers (Technology Integration Mentors) and Tech Coordinators.

The SWAT teams have a very important mission: Helping to bring technology into their 21st. century classrooms.

One student from each of the Grade 7 and 8 classes was nominated by their teacher to join the inaugural team of Students Who Assist Technology. Grade 7 and 8 students at SCDSB are part of the “One to One Laptop Program” in which each student has a Macbook laptop to use for the school year.

As any classroom teacher will tell you, it is not only difficult to keep up with the ever changing world of technology, but it is especially difficult to keep up with the technological aptitudes of the students – or said simply “the kids know more than the adults.” That is why the SWAT team was formed.

These students will be recognized as the experts they are. The goal is to have them help with the little problems that arise when using technology in the classroom. The students will also be asked for feedback on various aspects of the laptop program and are asked to share their knowledge with others. From time to time, the group will gather in person but for the most part it will be done through the use of technology. In fact, they had the opportunity to reflect on their day and give feedback through a wiki. A wiki is an interactive webspace where students are able to post their comments and respond to the comments of others.

This group is not expected to tackle this mission alone. Along with Lisa Samuels, Technology Coordinator, three teachers have been assigned the task of helping teachers to integrate technology into the 7 and 8 classrooms this year. These teachers are called Technology Integration Mentors (TIM teachers). Each TIM teacher supports fifteen different classrooms and has taken on the role of organizing and guiding the SWAT team.

The first day with the SWAT team included team building games and exercises, a video chat with the Superintendent of Education Jean McHarg, an overview of their roles, a tour of the Information Management Services Department, an interactive whiteboard activity, words of encouragement and thanks from the Director of Education Catherine McCullough, followed by a pizza lunch. After lunch students had the choice of creating podcasts, promotional videos, logos, instructional videos, posters, brochures or songs, all within the overall theme of the Laptop Program. SWAT Team students used the Macbooks to produce projects of considerable quality in a short period of time.

These new ambassadors for the laptop program have returned to their schools where they will take on a leadership role in their classrooms and will be called upon to assist students and staff with basic troubleshooting, software questions, setting up and using projectors, interactive whiteboards and many other technologies.
