St. David Students Complete Cardboard Sled Races

Students at St. David School put their love of outdoors, creativity, and innovation into action with the Cardboard Sled Challenge! Studen used collaboration and teamwork skills to create a Cardboard sled to represent their class. The only materials they were able to use were cardboard and duct tape to make their epic creations. The project is part of the Canadian Playful Skills Network project – a national network of schools dedicated to deepening and broadening play-based pedagogies. 

Students raced their completed sleds with excitement on January 23.

“We did a net design to reduce the amount of seams in it,” said Grade 5 student Dharshan Shinoj.“We also did a small paper prototype before we started so can make sure it’s a feasible design.”

“To make it go fast, we put tape on the bottom and we coloured it with crayons so it’s waxy and slippery,” added Grade 5 student Xander Pharand.

The event was part of the Canadian Playful Schools Network – a national network of schools dedicated to deepening and broadening play-based pedagogies across four modes: green (outdoor-focused), screen (digital), machine (building and making for a purpose), and everything in between, which speaks to the fundamental importance of place, identity, language, and culture.

Marymount Students Place First in Province Wide Video Contest

Grade 7 Marymount Students placed first in the Short Video Contest presented by Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association. The contest was open to all English Catholic Schools in the province of Ontario. Videos celebrated the Catholic Education Week theme of We are many, we are one. 

The students, with help from their teacher Liane Dutrisac, chose to focus on their school – Marymount Academy. They took inspiration from the amazing programs, activities, clubs, and community initiatives that contribute to making the school a welcoming and inclusive place for all. The students wanted to convey the message that we can live the Catholic gospel values each day through community service opportunities, social justice initiatives and by creating experiences that spark joy. 

“I was not expecting to win, and I was super surprised that we got first place! We worked very hard on this project, and it was great to see the work pay off” said Codie Ward, Grade 7 student at Marymount Academy. 

“I am so blessed to part of this school and so happy we came in first place,” said Lydia Gnaly, Grade 7 student at Marymount Academy. 

“Our school was excited and overjoyed to learn that we won the competition. Our school’s mission and vision speak to the fact that at Marymount, we want to develop graduates who will be curious, compassionate, and kind leaders in our community and beyond. I think that the students were able to portray this well in the video that they produced,” said Cassandra Tenbergen, Principal of Marymount Academy.

Sudbury Catholic Schools Welcome the Year of the Rabbit!

The Lunar New Year is a time for celebration and renewal, and it is an important cultural event for many around the world. This year, the Lunar New Year falls on January 22nd, 2023, and marks the start of the Year of the Rabbit.

In Chinese culture, the rabbit is a symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity, so it is regarded that 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope.

Many of our schools find unique ways to celebrate this holiday, and we look forward to seeing how they will incorporate the celebration of Lunar New Year into the classroom by teaching students about the holiday and its history through activities.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity, and celebrating Lunar New Year is one way to accomplish this. By celebrating Lunar New Year, we promote understanding and acceptance of different cultures, and foster a sense of community within our learning environments.

Wishing everyone a Happy Lunar New Year! May the Year of the Rabbit bring good luck, prosperity, and hope to all.

Family Literacy Day 2023

Family Literacy Day is an important event that is celebrated annually in Canada on January 27th. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of literacy and the role that families play in supporting the literacy development of their children.

Sudbury Catholic District School Board recognizes the crucial role that literacy plays in the success of our students. Literacy is not only the ability to read and write, but also the ability to understand and use information in a variety of contexts. It is essential for academic success and for personal growth and development.

We also acknowledge the important role that families play in promoting literacy at home. Research has shown that children who have parents and guardians who read to them, talk to them, and encourage them to read independently, have a stronger foundation in literacy which can help them succeed at school.

That is why we encourage all of our families to participate in Family Literacy Day activities. Reading together as a family, visiting the library, and participating in literacy-related events can all be fun and engaging ways to promote literacy and support the literacy development of our students.

On this Family Literacy Day, let’s celebrate the power of literacy and the importance of families working together to support the literacy development of their children. Let’s work together to create a literate and informed community, where every child has the opportunity to succeed.

Holy Mother Statue Returns Home to St. Charles College

The Holy Mother Statue was first purchased by the 1951 Charter Class at St. Charles College and presented to the Basilian priests who ran the school at its Pine Street location. The statue was stationed above the front entrance for many years. When the Basilians sold the property, the statue stayed with the building.

Alumni of the Charter Class have arranged for the statue to be properly restored and donated back to St. Charles College in its current location. The statue will serve as a reminder of the kindness, compassion, and benevolence that the Holy Mother represented. She will hold a special place in the school, and will serve as a visible sign of our faith.  The statue was formally placed and welcomed back to St. Charles College during a special Mass which was held on January 11, 2022. Bishop Ron Fabbro, an alumnus, conducted the Mass and was joined by several other alumni including: Gerry Lougheed, Jim Gordon, Roland Muzzatti, Joe Pintur, Anthony Chezzi and Geoffrey Lougheed.

St. Albert Adult Learning Centre welcomes YMCA Settlement Worker!

The Settlement Worker in the Schools(SWIS) program is a partnership with YMCA Immigration Services and Sudbury Catholic District School Board in providing settlement services to the students and their families. Services are provided on an ongoing and as-needed basis.

SWIS Services may include:

  • Information and orientation sessions about the education school system focusing on support for school registrations, student requirements and education terminology 
  • Support in attending parent/teacher interviews
  • Social Integration support to participate in school events and activities
  • Needs assessment and referrals to community resources
  • Community connections to support systems within the schools and community
  • Social integration support to participate in school events and activities
  • Information sessions to school staff to ensure cultural awareness and understanding of the challenges newcomers face adjusting to a new academic environment
  • Study Buddy Initiatives

Grade 8 Students at St. Benedict Complete Festive Coding Activity

The Grade 8 Classes are celebrating Hour of Code with an old, familiar character from our youth.  Dr. Seuss’ Grinch is the focus of the coding exercise today at St. Benedict as the students login, engage and code their way to saving Christmas.  

A hush fell on the class, as the Grinch and his trusty, loveable dog, gave instructions for the project.  Students entered code, debugged and collected points as they walked through this excellent, Christmas-themed project for Computer Science Education Week.

All hearts grew three sizes this day!

St. Charles College Cards Collect over 100,000 Cans for the Sudbury Food Bank

Each year, the staff, and students at St. Charles College work together for a common goal; to support the Sudbury Food Bank through their annual Fall Canned Food Drive. St. Charles College is proud to announce that they have once again pushed the envelope – the school collected 101,402 cans and raised $16,143!

The Sudbury Food Bank relies heavily on the staff and student’s generosity to help meet the growing needs in our community. Year after year, students canvass neighbourhoods, bag groceries and complete in-school fundraisers to help support the local food bank. 

“Helping out with the SCC canned food drive is a fantastic way to serve our community. It feels good to help. It was also fun collecting cans with fellow Card classmates. Not only did I help my community, but I have memories that will last a lifetime,” said Alexis Texeira, Grade 11 student at St. Charles College. 

“It is great to witness staff and students come together to help members in our community who need our support. I am very proud of the students who gave their time to support the Food Bank and our community,” said Jennifer Humphrey, Teacher at St. Charles College.
