As the Olympics draw closer, Canadians can’t help but catch the spirit. Some of our SCDSB staff and students were lucky enough to be a part of this historic event this past weekend. One of our teachers from St. Charles College, Jennifer Petahtegoose, and her daughter Hannah, a student at St. James Catholic Elementary danced at the torch lighting ceremony in Sudbury with Kim Nootchtai and her daughter Brianna who is also a student at St. James. As well, Steve Callaghan, our Chaplain at St. Charles College has two sons who are graduates of St. Charles who were both Olympic torch runners for the ceremony.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS “FREE THROW” COMPETITION
What a way to kick off the new year! Students at Immaculate Conception Catholic School enjoyed participating in the yearly “Knights of Columbus FREE THROW Competition” on January 5th, 2010. Fun was had by all. The Knights of Columbus Council 7368 are dedicated to our community. Each year, they conduct the “Free Throw” competition in 7 local schools in Valley East. The winners will participate in the Regional Competition to be held at Immaculate Conception School on January 28th.
Bishop Alexander Carter Students Take Part in the Season of Giving
Students at Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School were challenged to bring in gifts to support the St. Vincent de Pol Society which is a charitable organization that helps out the less fortunate. Each of the homerooms were asked to bring in gifts and fill out a bingo card that had certain gift items on it. Once the certain gift was brought in, the item was checked off on the card. When the whole card was complete, the homeroom won the Bingo and received a pizza lunch donated by Topper’s Pizza. This year’s winner was Mrs. Roy’s grade 12 homeroom class. Mrs. Roy’s students were the first to bring in all of their gifts and have them wrapped and ready for donating. Ms. Prusila, a teacher at Bishop took on the organizing of this project when she joined the Bishop staff as she felt it was important to have the students take part in the season of giving.
St. Ben’s Students Learn About Hospitality and Tourism at Cambrian College
Students from St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School were invited to Cambrian College recently to learn more about their Hospitality and Tourism programming. It was a day full of activities and learning as the students participated in different workshops such as preparing their own lunch in the Fountaine Bleue Dining Room. Edith Vigna, the teacher from St. Benedict who accompanied the students said that the highlight for the group was making their own pizzas for lunch. ” We had a really good day at Cambrian College.” stated Vigna. “The kids were very interested and asked really good questions. They are looking forward to attending more workshops like these in the future!”
Glenn Thibeault Supports Community and SCDSB
Our Member of Parliament, Glenn Thibeault is well known for supporting our community and once again he has stepped up to the plate and is aiming the spotlight on the importance of Autism awareness. The calendar that he distributes has a personal message that details his tabling of a bill – bill C-360, an Act to Amend the Canadian Health Act (Autism Spectrum Disorder). If passed, this bill would ensure that the cost of Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) and Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) are covered by the health care insurance plan of every province. To support this, his calendar provides facts about autism to dispel myths and has also included artwork on each page that was created by the students of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.

Bishop Simard Celebrates Christmas with St. Ben’s
The staff and students of St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School were treated to a mass with Bishop Simard this past week. In the spirit of Christmas, Bishop Simard was invited to speak to the St. Benedict community and extol Christmas blessings upon them. As well, the Grade 8 students of St. James were also invited to share in their celebration.
St. John Catholic Elementary School Supports St. John the Evangelist Parish
Father Mathieu, Parish Priest of St. John the Evangelist in Garson accepted a cheque from Toni Kritz-Roque, the grade 2 teacher from St. John Catholic Elementary School last week. The school raised the money through gift donations from staff and students that were used to make baskets and then raffled off. As well, local business donated gift certificates for the school’s gift tree. Tickets were sold and a total of $1500 was raised to support the parish. The parish is using the money to purchase malaria nets for children in third world countries. Each net costs ten dollars and can potentially protect a small family or groups of children from malaria.
Sudbury Regional Police Supports St. David’s
The Greater Sudbury Police Services Admin. Chief, Deputy Chief and Inspectors went to St. David’s recently to spread the gift of the Love of Reading with the students and staff of St. David Catholic Elementary School. Each school day for one week, a member of the Greater Sudbury Police Services senior team took time out in the classrooms and read Christmas tales of peace, joy an giving. Students were inspired and enthused after the police services visits and were looking forward to sharing a good book with their mentors in the new year!
A Sharing of Culture and Support for St. Joseph and St. David
Students from St. Joseph and St. David’s Catholic Elementary Schools joined together for the day at St. David’s schools to build links between the two communities. The students’ teachers, Irene Dembek from St. Joseph and Christina Kilby from St. David’s brought their classes together as part of their multi-school project to build knowledge and understanding of the history and traditions found in Aboriginal culture. It is their hope that their project would begin building supportive relationships for Aboriginal students and illicit parent involvement in order to assist students in their embracing of their cultural background. Will Morin, a local artist and story teller was invited in to the school to share his stories and his expertise in Aboriginal culture with both the Aboriginal students as well as the general student population.
