St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School Holds 8th Annual ‘Christmas Sponsored Families’ Campaign

St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School will be holding its 8th Annual Christmas Sponsored Families Campaign to support families from St. David, St. Francis and St. Christopher Catholic schools as well as the Salvation Army. Each home room class will sponsor a Greater Sudbury family to help brighten their Christmas. The students also raise money to purchase gifts for the children and collect food items, all of which are donated to the schools and the Salvation Army and delivered to the families. It is a wonderful tradition at St. Benedict which has brought a great deal of joy and commitment to both students and staff over the last eight years.

The Salvation Army will be picking up the packages on Friday, December 15, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, 2993 Algonquin Road for 18 families. Staff and students at St. Benedict’s will deliver the remaining packages to the respective schools.

Congratulations to Emily Rabski, a Grade 4 student at Pius XII Catholic School for her first place finish in the Fire Chief For The Day Contest. As part of the winning package, Emily was picked up at her house by fire trucks, Aerial 1 and Pump 2 and transported to the
Van Horne Fire Station where she received a tour and proclaimed Chief For The Day!

Emily was later escorted back to the school by the Acting Fire Chief, Marc Leduc for the official Chief For The Day presentation in her classroom. The City of Greater Sudbury Fire Services also participated in a special ceremony honouring her as the first place winner of the 2006 Fire Chief For The Day Contest.

The Fire Chief For The Day Contest was open to all grade four students from the four school boards in the City of Greater Sudbury. Students were invited to participate in creating an escape plan of their home with the help of family members. In order to qualify to win, a contestant had to:

1. Indicate two ways out of each room
2. Identify the location of their smoke detectors
3. Indicate the meeting point outside of the home
4. Identify the emergency phone number
5. Complete and practice the Fire Safety Plan of him/her home

A total of 1,869 students from all four school boards were invited to participate in the Fire Chief For The Day Contest. This activity focused on ensuring that every family developed and practiced a home escape plan would help to save their lives in the event of a fire.

Ontario Skills Medalist Recognized by Sudbury Catholic Board

Jordan Lanteigne, a Grade 12 student at St. Charles College was awarded a silver medal for his plumbing talents at the 17th Ontario Skills Competitions held in Kitchener on May 2, 2006. The annual trades competition allows students from across the province the opportunity to compete and to apply their skills in Construction, Design, Manufacturing, Transportation, Communications and Hospitality.

Jordan demonstrated interest in plumbing in his first year of Construction Technology courses at St. Charles College. In Grade 11 Jordan received a coop placement with United Plumbing co-owned by Leight and Angela Faubert. The Faubert’s were very impressed by Jordan’s work ethic and offered him the opportunity to work as a coop student at United Plumbing during his Grade 12 year.

Given his talent for the trade, Jordan was selected by the Sudbury Catholic District School Board to represent St. Charles College at the 2006 Ontario Skills Competition where he received a silver medal for his efforts. He was recently recognized by the Sudbury Catholic District School Board for his dedication to his craft and his excellent achievement.
