With its ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and stewardship, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board (SCDSB) once again launched the School Conservation CHALLENGE for the 4th consecutive year, in September!

In 2006, Senior Administration approved the creation of a contest/challenge that would enhance the effectiveness of the Dearness Conservation Program in addition to acknowledging “Environmental Champions” within our schools! Thus, the “SCDSB School Conservation CHALLENGE” was born.

The selection of the CHAMPIONS for the School Conservation CHALLENGE is based on a point system using the three following categories:

1. An unannounced site visit during the school year.
2. An interview with the Principal of each participating school.
3. Submission of reports and other relevant materials by the participating school.

The school that has attained the most points using these three categories is deemed the winner – the school wins $1,500 to put towards a greening project at their school and a banner that they can display with pride for the next year! Two runner-up schools receive each a prize of $500 for greening projects as well!

Previous winners include Pius XII School (2006/2007), Immaculate Conception School (2007/2008) and St. Francis School (2008/2009).

Hip-Hip-Hooray for Baby Day!!!

On June 10th, Sudbury Catholic staff who had a baby (or grand-baby) born in 2009 were invited to the Catholic Education Centre to celebrate together as a community. There were beautiful babies everywhere and the new moms, dads, grandparents and siblings enjoyed each other’s company while board office staff provided some helping hands in order for guests to enjoy prayer and lunch together. The first annual Sudbury Catholic Baby Day was a huge success and everyone in attendance were thrilled to have the opportunity to get to know the “graduating class of 2027”. Congratulations to all the families and huge thank-you’s to all those who helped organize this great day! We are already looking forward to next year!!

Corpus Christi Wins Annual Battle of the Books

Congratulations to the Corpus Christi Battle of the Books Reading Club on their fine performance at the final competition on May 19 as they placed first in a field of 16 teams from around the Sudbury District. Students demonstrated great teamwork skills and amazing memories as they responded to questions about books they’ve read throughout the school year. Many thanks to the Sudbury Public Library for hosting the event and Chapters for sponsoring the event.

St. Anne Staff “Pied” for School Challenge

Students at St. Anne Catholic Elementary School were issued a challenge. The school takes part every year in the Jump Rope for Heart Event but Vice Principal Laura Stirrett felt that this year, they could do more. Stirrett set a few fundraising goals for the students and asked them to try to outdo what they had done in the past. If they met these challenges, then certain staff members would have to take part in some interesting challenges of their own.

The goals set for the students were as follows:
Bronze challenge – if the students raised $1000, then Vice Principal Laura Stirrett and Custodian Daniel Sauve would have their hair spraypainted different colours for the day.
Silver challenge – if the students raised $1500, Vice Principal Laura Stirrett and Custodian Daniel Sauve would have pies thrown in their face as well as have their hair spraypainted.
Gold challenge – if the students raised $2000, then the the Vice Principal and Custodian would have their hair spraypainted, pies thrown in their face… and would be subjected to a silly string attack.
Platinum challenge – after these challenges went out, Vice Principal Laura Stirrett threw down the final gauntlet and said that if these challenges were not only met but surpassed and the school raised $3500, then the students could subject not only herself and the custodian, but St. Anne Principal Guy Mathieu as well!

Well, the students surpassed all fundraising challenges and managed to raise an amazing $6300 in just one week. To the delight of students and staff, top fundraising students took the opportunity to spraypaint hair, throw pies and spray silly string at the Principal, Vice Principal and Custodian without consequences. In the gym the students screamed with excitement as the three staff members could do nothing but sit and take the abuse. Congratulations to all of the students and staff at St. Anne for taking on such a great challenge with fantastic school spirit!

St. Andrew Hosts Esso Family Math Night

Two primary classrooms were buzzing with activity recently as the St. Andrew School Council hosted an ESSO Math Night for the families of children from grades JK to 3. Over 65 people were in attendance. Each child worked with a parent, grandparent or aunt to complete fun “math activities”. Mrs. Emily Sheppard, the vice chair of the St. Andrew Catholic School Council, researched, organized and prepared everything for the evening. Several volunteers from Academic Services and 2 from the New Sudbury Best Start Hub led everyone in the activities. At the end of the evening each child left with a generous gift bag filled with math manipulatives and instructions of activities to do at home.

Retired SCDSB Teacher Looking for a Challenge

Retired teacher Peter Stankiewicz is doing just that on June 12 &13th. He will be biking 200 km from Toronto to Niagara Falls in The Ride to Conquer Cancer. “This trek is nothing like the challenge to battle cancer,” Stankiewicz says, “but through this ride I can do my part in this fight againstt a killer disease that has taken so many lives including those of many fellow teachers over the years as well as taking many teachers out of the classroom as they battle this disease.”

Training for the Physical Challenge

Peter is biking 30-50 km each day and occasionally rides 65 km plus. However it is the challenge of fundraising that is equally daunting. Peter needs to raise $2500 in donations before embarking on the Ride to Conquer Cancer. All proceeds will be going to The Princess Margaret which is one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world. It is estimated that 1 out of every 4 Canadians will die from cancer and 40% of women and 45% of men in Canada will develop cancer in their lifetime. Those that wish to can help him to meet this challenge by contributing to the cause where the money will be used to help support critical cancer research. Donations may be placed at www.conquercancer.ca by clicking on donate now then typing in his name then click on the name when it appears which will take you to his home page. Receipts will be issued for donations of $10 or more.

SCDSB Participates in “Triple P” Training

Educators from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board took part in Triple P Training (Positive Parenting Program) recently which provides participants with an overview of the nature and significance of child behaviour problems. The training also familiarizes participants with the principles of effective parent consultation. Educators were also guided though an exercise to assist in the identification of available and effective parenting services and resources in their communities as a starting point for increasing support networks.

St. Mary Staff Gets “Pied”!!

Recently students from St. Mary Catholic School in Capreol participated in the annual Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart Campaign. Each year the energetic students have raised an incredible amount of money. This year was no exception as they brought in an amazing $1,408.30. In the past fourteen years, St. Mary School has raised $46,072.01. The boys and girls had lots of fun while displaying some very skilled skipping techniques and slam dunking. As always they are very grateful to the wonderful volunteers who give so generously of their time to help out in such a big way. The school is particularly thankful to Miss O’Reilly for co-ordinating this big event. As an added incentive teachers agreed to be ‘pied’ if fundraising goals were met. Each teacher was ‘pied’ by the top fundraiser in his or her class. Mrs. Waszczylo, Principal, was ‘pied’ by the top fundraiser in the school, grade 4 student, Britney Chevrier.

Music Monday at St. Charles Catholic Elementary

On Monday, May 3rd, 2010 St. Charles Catholic Elementary School in Chelmsford gathered outside to participate in the nationwide event, Music Monday. More than 700,000 students from over 2,000 schools in every province and territory across Canada  celebrated the sixth annual Music Monday – a nation-wide, simultaneous concert to celebrate the importance of music in our lives – and especially in our schools.  This event underscores the importance of music education. Students and teachers from coast-to-coast took their music programs outdoors into their communities and performed the same song at the exact same time, uniting the entire country.

For the second year, the theme song for Music Monday was “Sing Sing,” written by multi Juno-award winning Canadian artist, Serena Ryder. St. Charles students and teachers also sang their school song, He’s Got the Whole World, and This Little Light of Mine.
