MPP Rick Bartolucci Takes Part in Unique Workshop at Corpus Christi Catholic School

Mr. Rick Bartolucci, MPP for the City of Sudbury took time from his busy schedule to participate in “Learning Through the Arts” workshops held at Corpus Christi Catholic School recently. The three-year pilot project involving eight of the schools of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board infuses core curriculum subjects such as language arts, math, and science with art forms.

Eleanor Albanese, the project coordinator for Northern Ontario maintains that the use of art to teach the regular curriculum lends itself to a wide variety of individual learning styles among students. “Some children learn best through movement while others are better if they see or hear the words acted out,” stated Albanese.

“A study by Queen’s University showed students in the Learning Through the Arts program scored 11 percent higher in math compared to other students,” noted Albanese. MPP Rick Bartolucci echoed Albanese’s comments after observing the workshops in the Grade 1 and 4 classes at the school stating that, “Learning Through the Arts is an excellent program because it teaches the total child and enhances the students’ ability to understand complex material. Learning Through the Arts brings out the best in all of us,” concluded Bartolucci.

Director of SCDSB Recognized as Leader In Education

Zandra Zubac, Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board received a special award of merit from the Business and Professional Women’s Club (BPWC) of Sudbury recently for her significant contribution to education. The gala evening was a high point in the club’s history, celebrating 60 years of business and friendship. In recognition of this milestone anniversary the BPWC recognized “Women in Leadership in the Sudbury Community.” The awards ceremony was devoted to celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of working women. Over 30 women from the educational, health, legal, communication and political sectors were honoured throughout the evening.

Zandra Zubac is extremely pleased to have been selected as one of the recipients of the ‘”Women In Leadership Award.” She believes that, ”Women in Education should have a strong love of people, good work habits, a commitment to ongoing personal and professional learning, and a belief that you must never give up on your students.” Although the position of Director is an extremely busy one, Zandra continues to make her family and friends her top priority. She is an active member of her parish, St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, and a volunteer with the Serbian Heritage Program.

Zandra received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Laurentian University, and a Bachelor of Education Degree from Nipissing University. She has
also acquired a Masters of Arts Degree in Education from Central Michigan University and a Catholic Leadership Certificate from St.
Michael’s University, (University of Toronto). Zandra began her career as an educator with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board in the elementary panel as French program teacher. She was principal and vice-principal at six of the Board’s elementary and secondary schools before moving onto the position of Superintendent of Education in the fall of 1996 and Director of Education in 2002. Zandra’s chief duties as Director of Education are to liaise with the SCDSB elected trustees, to implement government directives at the system level, and to improve student achievement in collaboration with the Board’s “Partners in Education.”

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board would like to congratulate
Zandra Zubac on her dedication to education and her special award of
merit in recognition of the “Women in Leadership Award.”

PVEP Focus of Discussion at Regional Catholic School Council Meeting

Representatives from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s Regional Catholic School Council met recently to review a number of important items relating to Catholic schools in Sudbury and all school boards across the province. One of the key areas of discussion revolved around the Parent Voice in Education Project (PVEP) which is a discussion paper prepared by 20 parent leaders who have been appointed by the Minister of Education, Gerard Kennedy, to consult parents on ways to strengthen the parent voice at the local and provincial level. Regional Catholic School Council members, principals, board staff and trustees engaged in a lively debate on a number of questions posed by the PVEP discussion paper in preparation for the Ministry’s Regional Forum being held this Saturday afternoon at College Boreal.

Educators Improve Student Learning

Principals, vice-principals and Grade 4, 5, and 6 teachers from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board attended full day workshops dedicated to improving learning for junior grade students recently. The topics of study were based on the findings from the Expert Panel Reports in Literacy and Mathematics.

These reports are curriculum resources which were recently published and distributed by the Ministry of Education. Collaborative dialogue between the school partners quickly led to development of strategies to improve classroom practice. In turn, the implementation of these strategies will ultimately lead to higher levels of student achievement.

Each school in the Sudbury Catholic Board has selected a lead teacher in literacy and a lead teacher in mathematics. These teachers will be provided with additional training and time to implement the strategies within their own classrooms. In addition, the lead-teachers will be given the opportunity to share this research-based information with the other junior grade teachers in their schools. Junior educators, with the support of school administrators have been invited to journey forward in their quest of best practices to improve learning for all students.

SCDSB Appoints New Principals

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board has appointed Guy Mathieu, the principal of Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School in Valley East to become the new principal of St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School effective January 31, 2005. Mr. Mathieu replaces Teresa Stewart who will be retiring at the end of January after 30 years of experience with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.
Sherry Bortolotti, principal of St. Andrew Catholic School will be the new principal of Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic School. Judy Bellmore, who retired in June as the principal of St. Andrew Catholic School will return to her former position until the end of the school year.

SCDSB Elects New Chair and Vice-chair

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board elected a new chair and vice-chair at the regular meeting of the board held at the Catholic Education Centre on December 7, 2004. Paula Peroni, a longtime Trustee with the Board returns as Board Chair, a position she is no stranger to having been elected previously as Chair of the Board in 2000 and 2001. Mrs. Peroni brings a wealth of experience with her and is currently an executive member of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) and the Canadian Catholic School Trustees’ Association (CCSTA). In returning to her former role, Peroni commented on the changes she has witnessed in education since she first became a Trustee and the Board’s reaction to these changes. “Our greatest challenge as a board is to help the Minister of Education understand the important issues in education today such as ongoing funding for transportation and special education,” stated Peroni. “The vision of this Board will be not only be to maintain but also to improve the excellent faith-based education for our students in the way of new Information Technology initiatives, ”concluded Peroni.

Barry MacDonald, elected last December as a Trustee with the Sudbury Catholic Board will assume the position of Vice-Chair. “I would like to thank the members of the board for placing their confidence in me in my new portfolio as Vice-Chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board,” stated MacDonald. “Being a new Trustee and new to the Board, I found this last year to be a very challenging one. I would like to thank our previous Chair, Ray Vincent for his excellent leadership and I am looking forward to working very closely with our new Chair, Paula Peroni, fellow Trustees, and Director of Education, Zandra Zubac in continuing to provide for the physical, spiritual, intellectual, cultural and moral growth of our children in our Catholic environment,” noted MacDonald.

SCDSB Superintendent Recognized for Dedication to Exceptional Children

The Ontario Council for Exceptional Children presented long time educator and SCDSB Superintendent of Education Michael Csinos, with the “Educational Leader of the Year Award” at its 48th Annual Conference held in Ottawa recently. Each year awards are presented to individuals who have contributed in several significant ways to exceptional young people or the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).

Michael Csinos has been an area Superintendent with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board for the past 21 years. Under Mike’s tenure, the welfare of exceptional students, their educational assistants and their families witnessed tremendous gains. As Superintendent responsible for Special Education, Mr. Csinos supervised a group of elementary schools, three secondary schools, a staff of educational assistants, an adult and continuing education school, and a classroom at the Children’s Treatment Centre. In addition, he was also responsible for special education programs, department staff and committees and secondary teacher negotiations and staffing. Presently, he participates in the Children’s Treatment Centre Committee at Laurentian Hospital, the Joint Liaison Committee at Network North and the Special Needs Regional Resource Advisory Committee Cambrian College. Mike’s list of past associations is equally impressive, having been a member of the Hungarian Heritage Society, the Child and Family Centre Advisory Board, the Community Child Abuse Committee at the Children’s Aid Society and the Laurentian University Museum and Arts Centre Advisory Committee. He has also been a strong advocate of the CEC both at the local and provincial levels. The Sudbury Catholic District School Board applauds Mike Csinos’ dedication to exceptional children and congratulates him on an award well deserved.
