Catholic Education Week is a unique opportunity to celebrate the great work of Catholic schools in the dynamic and creative integration of Catholic teachings and gospel values across the curriculum.
Throughout Catholic Education Week, our schools will be focusing on the theme “How Beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.” We invite all members of our community, especially our parents and trustees, to participate in the celebrations and activities that will mark the celebration of Catholic Education Week 2009 at our schools.

The McGuinty government is investing over $12 million in energy efficient retrofits for our four local school boards, Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci announced today.
“A vibrant school environment starts from the ground up. By retrofitting our schools we’re creating jobs while saving energy and money, and teaching our kids about greener ways to live,” said Bartolucci.
More than 1000 publicly funded schools across the province will be made more energy efficient to give Ontario students better places to learn and help boards save energy and money. Construction will start as soon as this summer.
This two-year investment will help improve existing schools across Ontario, while creating and sustaining more than 5,500 jobs. Of the $550-million investment, $400 million will be allocated to:
• Conduct energy audits to help manage and conserve energy
• Retrofit buildings with new energy efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and boilers.
Locally, these investments will save school boards money by reducing energy bills and will create jobs in our new green economy:
• Conseil scolaire de district du Grand Nord de l’Ontario – $1,796,375
• Conseil scolaire de district catholique du Nouvel-Ontario -$3,610,099
• Rainbow District School Board – $4,521,874
• Sudbury Catholic District School Board – $2,343,330
The remaining $150 million will be allocated on a project-by-project basis to improve the learning environment for students currently in energy inefficient portables and schools.
Ontario schools are also teaching kids how to be more environmentally friendly. Starting in the fall of 2009, environmental education will be added to the curriculum in every subject, in every grade. Programs such as EcoSchools are teaching students about conserving energy, minimizing waste and greening school grounds.
“Making our school facilities more energy efficient promotes better, greener learning environments — a key ingredient to building the best possible publicly funded education system in the world, and one that inspires confidence in our communities and success in our students,” concluded Bartolucci.

St. Francis Catholic School will hold an Open House on Thursday May 14th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. for those students and parents in grade 5/6 who might be interested in seeing the school and meeting the intermediate teachers.
This is an opportunity for the students and parents to visit St. Francis and meet the grade 7/8 teachers.
The school will also host a Spring Fair on Thursday May 7th from 4:30 to 7:00 pm. All welcome.
A St. Mary Catholic School Student was the recent winner of the PEO Bridge Building Competition held during National Engineering Week. The Sudbury Chapter of Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) held the 13th Annual PEO Bridge Building Competition at Council Chambers at Tom Davies Square for both elementary and secondary students.
Students had to construct a bridge from a kit containing only six balsa wood strips (36″ x 1/4″ x 1/4″) and one bottle of Elmers™ School Glue. Specific construction criteria had to be followed for the bridge building. Bridges were tested to failure in the “Bridge Crusher” which recorded the maximum load carried. Nicole Pinto-Ponce, from St. Mary Catholic School in Capreol was the overall winner in the competition. Nicole placed first in the Elementary division with an outstanding score of 213.2 points.
Her bridge held a load of 143 pounds!
Other members of the St. Mary Catholic School Team included Carli Meeks and Megan O’Link who placed 5th with a load of 30.5 pounds, Davey Meeks and Meagan Larocque who placed 12th with a load of 19.7 pounds, and Daniel Moxam who placed 21st with a load of 15.2 pounds. Nicole was presented with a trophy, which will stay at St. Mary Catholic School until next year’s competition.

The Learning Disabilities Association of Sudbury has selected Patricia Girlametto, a resource teacher at St. Francis Catholic School as the recipient of its 2008 Outstanding Educator Award.
Ms. Girolametto has been teaching for 25 years, primarily in the field of Special Education. She is being recognized for her “above and beyond” effort and enthusiasm in the classroom and for making a difference in the lives of many students. This prestigious award reflects the sentiments of not only the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, but also its students, parents and other educators with respect to the importance of her contributions.
“This award recognizes unwavering commitment and achievement, while supporting students with learning disabilities, as they strive to succeed at school and in life,” Ryan Minor, Chair of the Association’s Board of Directors.
“Ms. Girolametto has been a leader within the school,” states Lorrie Petryna, principal of St. Francis Catholic School. “With assistance from Cambrian College Glenn Crombie Centre, she provides opportunities for her students to work within their own grade level, using technology.”
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is accepting student applications for summer student employment until Tuesday, April 21, 2009.
Eligibility:
For grant eligibility requirements, students must be enroled full-time at the date of application, in either a secondary school or in a post-secondary institution, and intend to return to schooling full-time at the end of their period of summer employment. Students must be between the ages of 16-24, on the commencement of the work term; or between 16-29 if disabled as defined in the Human Rights Code, Sec. 10 and legally authorized to work in Canada.
Students who were employed by the SCDSB during the summer of 2008 and meet the above criteria, are eligible for re-hire but must complete an application form 2009 to be considered for employment during the summer of 2009.
Requirements:
Successful candidates who did not work for the SCDSB in the summer of 2008, must provide Human Resources Services with a current acceptable * Criminal Background Check before the start of their employment. Failure to do so will render the offer of employment null and void. The original document will be photocopied by Human Resources Services and returned to the individual upon request.
* To be deemed current, the Criminal Background Check must be no more than 3 months old at the date it is submitted to Human Resources Services.
