St. Charles College Elementary Cards fill shoeboxes with love

Looking to answer the Essential Question “How are we church in the world?”, Mrs. Kathy Belanger’s 8A class and Mr. Thomson’s Grade 7/8 Life Skill’s class participated in Operation Christmas Child this year.

Operation Christmas Child is a special Christmas project affiliated with Samaritan’s Purse, a non-denominational Christian organization. With donated proceeds from an in-school Dress Down Day at St. Charles College, students went shopping at Dollarama and then had the opportunity to fill close to 70 shoeboxes with school supplies, hygiene items, toys and other gifts for children, ages 2-14, in less-fortunate countries around the world.

Mr. Thomson says “Every gift-filled shoebox is given unconditionally, regardless of religion, gender, or race, in a way that practically demonstrates the love of Jesus Christ around the globe.”

National Collection Week is Nov.14-20th with shoeboxes from Canada being shipped to places like the Ukraine, Haiti, El Salvador, Senegal and New Guinea.

Holy Cross Students Energized by Class Visit from Energy Minister

The grade 5/6 class at Holy Cross had many questions for MPP and Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault when he visited their class on October 11 to talk to them. Keen students emailed Thibeault two weeks ago with questions they had after studying electricity and energy conservation in science class. They were hoping that they would get an email response but were surprised when he offered to answer in person.

The students wanted to know about how we get electricity in Sudbury and Mr. Thibeault showed them an app called Grid Watch that shows energy consumption across the province in real time. He further elaborated that we get our electricity from a variety of sources but largely from the hydro-electric dams here in the north.

He addressed the students concerns about the safety of nuclear energy by explaining the many safety features he had seen in person at the power plants in southern Ontario. Many of the students are Simpsons fans and were relieved to hear that the plants we have do not resemble where Homer Simpson works at all.

There were further questions about what Members of Provincial Parliament do and what the responsibilities of and Energy Minister entail, prompting graded 5 student Woodrow Crowder to ask Thibeault how he manages such a large workload. Thibeault explained that he has many hard-working employees on his staff and that it takes a team to accomplish great things.

Activate your Recess at Pius XII!

Pius XII school is very excited to begin the ‘Activate Your Recess Program’. This is a partnership program with the SDHU and a local firm called Healthy Living Inc.. Recess gives children the opportunity to be active and engage in free play on a daily basis. This makes it an important school environment for the promotion of health-related physical activity. The program includes an activity pack with various sporting equipment for students to use at recess. The items are aimed at improving locomotor skills, ball skills, foot coordination, and visual-motor integrity.

Thank you Sudbury District Health Unit and Healthy Living Inc. for selecting Pius to receive this program!

Catholic Education Week May 1 – May 6: Opening Doors of Mercy

Pope Francis has declared 2016 a “Holy Year of Mercy” as a way for the Catholic church to “make more evident, its mission to be a witness of mercy”. The Holy Year began on December 8, 2015 and will be celebrated until November 20, 2016.

As well, Pope Francis opened the Vatican’s Holy Door on December 8th. The Holy Door is opened to evoke the concept of forgiveness which is the main focus of a Holy Year. The theme God’s mercy is illustrated in fifteen of the sixteen bronze panels that make up the Vatican Door. There are seven such Holy Doors in the world, including one in Quebec City.

Catholic Education Week 2016 combines both the theme of mercy and the act of opening doors of reconciliation, mercy and forgiveness to all around us.

Catholic Education Week is marked by special activities at all grade levels, including prayer celebrations and service activities.

We invite you to visit our schools during this special week and to participate in any of our activities as we celebrate Catholic Education Week 2016. See the list of activities.
