On February 1st, the Sudbury and District Health Unit and St. John Catholic Elementary School came together to offer an informative and tasty evening for families called E.A.T. (Eat Healthy, Anaphylaxis Awareness and Take and Taste). The SDHU began the evening with a presentation on allergies and anaphylaxis awareness. Families then sampled a variety of tasty, nutritious and nut-free lunch items such as egg salad pitas, veggie wraps, snack mix, fennel salad and black bean brownies. Students and their families explored new fruits such as papaya, mango, star fruit and grapples. There were interactive games for the children and recipes for the parents!

St. John Students Celebrate Literacy Day with a Twist
Primary students at St. John School celebrated World Literacy Day on Friday, January 27th with a Fairy Tale twist. Students enjoyed dressing as their favourite Fairy Tale character as they spent the morning engaged in literacy activities. At one station, students played Fairy Tale Trivia, answering questions about some of their beloved stories. Students also listened to and acted out Fairy Tales with their teachers.
St. John Students Stand Up Against Bullying and Wear Pink!
As a part of Bullying Awareness Week, and International STAND UP to Bullying Day, students at St. John wore pink! Pink day was a wrap up to a week of awareness activities, lessons and announcements all geared to help students advocate againstt bullying.
St. John’s Third Annual Relay for Life
As part of the school’s Catholic Education activities, St. John Elementary School held their third annual relay for life on May 6, 2011. Students, staff and invited guests started off their day in the gymnasium to listen to speakers from local cancer organizations talk about the positive impact the school’s relay has had on the community. As well, survivors connected to the school– be it parents, grandparents, friends etc, were introduced as honoured guests (donning yellow survivor t-shirts) and all were holding balloons with inspirational messages written on them. For the first part of the relay, the survivors and their family did their own few laps and the students stood in the middle of the loop and clapped and encouraged them shouting this year’s relay theme – “Fight Back!” At the end of the survivor’s loop, they released their balloons into the air taking with them, their hopes and wishes. The students then joined in and the relay officially began. After the walking portion was over, the entire school took part in a votive ceremony presided over by Father Sam D’Angelo. The grand total collected by St. John’s was an astounding $3437.94. “It is a day about celebrating courage and strength,” said Tricia Dowdall-Cerilli, principal of the school. “We remember those who have lost their battle and support the students and family left behind. It truly connects the school, parish and community as we stand united againstt cancer and whole-heartedly encourage those with the disease to Fight Back!”
St. John Students Get Hooked On Voting
Grade 4-6 students at St. John School in Garson recently participated in a “Student Vote” program sponsored by Elections Canada which gave them the opportunity to experience the democratic process firsthand as well as practice the habits of informed and engaged citizenship. April 28th, 2011 was our designated “Student Vote” day and students took on the roles of Deputy Returning Officers, Poll Clerks and voters parallelling the adult electoral process. The exercise of a mock election proved to be a very empowering process and students are eagerly awaiting the election results both at the school and federal level.
ST. JOHN SCHOOL 5/6 COED BASKETBALL TEAM BOARD AND CITY CHAMPS!
Congratulations goes out to the St. John School 5/6 Co-Ed Basketball Team who powered their way through the St. Raphael Royals 3rd annual 3 vs 3 Tournament and the Greater Sudbury Board of Basketball Officials Wrap Up Tournament with a combined total of 11 wins and 0 loses to take first place in both tournaments! St. John Catholic Elementary School Shows They “Can” Do It!
The students of St. John school are extremely proud to announce that they collected over 22,000 cans for the Garson Food Bank during its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. This year, the students set their sights on trying to meet last year’s total (16,000) and ended up surpassing it by an overwhelming 6,000 cans. All students and staff of St. John school should be very proud of their good deed in support of the Garson Food Bank.
St. John Catholic Elementary School Celebrates Terry Fox
On Thursday September 30, 2010, students and staff held their annual Run/Walk Event in memory of Terry Fox. Students were encouraged to bring in a Twoonie in support of the Terry Fox Foundation. The event was a huge success!
Golden Visit at St. John
Tessa Bonhomme inspired students and staff today at St. John School in Garson to never take their eye off the goal. Through a personal account of her struggles and triumphs during her twenty year career in hockey, we learned that with commitment, perseverance and hard work anything can happen – even a dream!
