Indigenous Celebration Held

The Diocesan Centre is planning an inclusive day of celebration based on indigenous culture, and would love a big turn out at this event. All students, staff, families and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend! It looks to be a great day planned!

5:30 am. Sunrise Ceremony ~

8:00 am. Pancake Breakfast ~

9:00 am. Teaching Carousel – Stations will be set up to be rotated through – 6 stations with 20 minute presentations at each~

a) Children drumming station~

b) Craft – decade of the rosary with four/six colour beads + leather OR~leather bookmark

c) 7 Grandfather teachings

d) Legends – Elders telling the stories~

e) Medicines and Wheel

f) Sacred Elements (fire keeper, tobacco, stones, feather, pipe, drums, smudge, animals) ~

11:00 am. Healing Circle – prayers, scripture (trilingual), blessing~

1:30 pm. Feast – “pot luck”

3:00 pm Travelling Song/Blessing~

Sudbury Catholic Schools – Running for Terry

Sudbury Catholic Schools are extremely proud of their history with the Terry Fox Foundation. Over the last eleven years, several of the board’s schools, including St. Andrew, St. James, St. John, St. Paul and St. Raphael Catholic Elementary Schools have taken part in the annual Terry Fox run collectively raising almost $60,000. The Sudbury Catholic schools are part of more than 4,000 schools across Canada taking part – raising $6.8 million dollars for cancer research. On Wednesday, September 30, 2015, SCDSB schools will again take part in the annual Terry Fox run with this year’s run commemorating the 35 anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. “We are very fortunate to have extremely dedicated and engaging staff,” stated Joanne Bénard, Director of Education for the Board. “We recognize as a board the powerful and positive impact that the Terry Fox Foundation and the Marathon of Hope represent, and we are proud of the past efforts of our students and staff collectively supporting this important cause. We will continue to support this national school run with our school communities.”

St. John’s Wins Nesbitt Cup

St. John Catholic Elementary School’s Co-ed Hockey team wins gold for the second year in a row at the Nesbitt Cup. The St. John Jaguars played in the finals againstt Algonquin Public School winning 4-1. Their coaches are extremely proud of their team’s positive attitude and hard work. All players represented St. John School and the Catholic District School Board with integrity and respect. Many thanks go out to the very dedicated coaching staff, parents, and students. Way to go Jags!!

St. John hosts the Canadian Hearing Society on Literacy Day

St. John students had a special Sign Language presentation for Family Literacy Day. Pat and Lise from the Canadian Hearing Society showed students how Communication and Literacy comes in many different forms such as, writing a grocery list, reading a newspaper, reading a recipe and using Sign Language. Pat is the Deaf Literacy Coordinator and Lise is the ‘interpreter’ with the Canadian Hearing Society.

The morning began with the sharing of a story followed by a song called, Don’t Laugh at Me. The song fit well for Pat, as he is deaf, and he placed himself as the character signing the lyrics as they read, “I’m fat, I’m thin, I’m short, I’m tall, I’m deaf, I’m blind hey aren’t we all….someday we’ll all have perfect wings, don’t laugh at me.”

As the presentation ended, students were introduced to various vocabulary and they attempted their signing skills with hand expressions. Peculiar and familiar hand shapes had students interact with curiosity and laughter. At the end of the presentation, all of the students used ‘sign language’ to clap by raising their arms waving their hands to clap in appreciation.

Knights of Columbus Free Throw

The Knights of Columbus (Council 60740) held a Basketball Free Throw Competition for students from St. Paul, St. Raphael and St. John who won their perspective competitions at the school level.
The winners from the competition go to the next level of the Championship being held at Marymount College in February.

Many thanks to the Knights for hosting the competition at St. Raphael School.

Christmas Arts Spectacular tonight at St. Charles College

This morning, students at the feeder schools were wowed by the magical performances of St. Charles’ performing arts students. 

The yearly Christmas concert featured MC Jenna Daypuk belting out “Let it Go” from Disney’s “Frozen” which created a sing along by some 550 grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 students.

Other highlights include the choir and band ensembles as well as Parker Szilva and Ava Danyluk singing “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”.

The Arts concert is open to the public this evening, Thursday, December 11th at 7 p.m. in the St. Charles College gymnasium.
