Student Senate at Sudbury Catholic Schools donates over 150 coats to those in need

The Student Senate at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board has given the gift of warmth this holiday season! The fundraising campaign was spearheaded by the Student Senate, which is comprised of 10 secondary students representing all four secondary schools in the Board. 

The group encouraged staff and students to donate clean, gently used coats of all sizes to families in need. Working with Derek Cashmore of Cooper Equipment Rentals, the coats will be donated to the N’Swakamok Native Friendship Centre and then made available to those in need in our region and in other communities throughout Northern Ontario. The original ask was 100 coats, however the Sudbury Catholic School community surpassed that goal, donating over 150 coats and over 50 winter accessories including hats, scarves and mitts to help families stay warm this Winter.

“The Student Senate members are not just leaders in their schools, but leaders in the greater community,” said Amanda Barry, Teacher Facilitator of the Student Senate. “The students embody the Catholic Graduate Expectations and model stewardship through their actions and their love for others. They have more plans to serve the local community in 2019, so stay tuned!”

“The amount of spirit and compassion exemplified by everyone involved is truly breathtaking,” said Kira Gouchie, Student Trustee and member of the Student Senate. “It was so amazing to see all the students come together for a great cause during the holiday season.”

The Student Senate coat drive ran from November 19 – December 7, 2018. The group is hoping to make the drive an annual fundraiser as part of their Student Senate initiatives. 

Cards Customs makes their mark!

Cards Customs T-shirt shop is more then just an ordinary elective course for students at St. Charles College. This innovative in school business is flourishing this year with coop students collaborating together with teacher, Gregg Kolodinski to create and design logos for men and women’s apparel for sports, clubs and school spirit swag for many of our schools at Sudbury Catholic District School Board. 

Cards Customs established a community partnership with Kevin Roetscher, owner of HMR Branding here in Sudbury, which has opened the eyes of students to the value in learning business skills when they move on to post-secondary or the workplace once graduated.

This has given at risk students in the Open Doors program every opportunity to highlight their hidden talents, to engage in a hands on learning experience and be apart of a school wide project that is growing with interest. Co-op students are using their web design and marketing skills to develop fun and unique apparel, while seeking part time job opportunities.

Student’s testimonials justify the level passion and engagement in this new initiative at St. Charles College with the following statement.

Secondary Schools Open Houses Schedule

Calling all future secondary students! See below for when each of our Secondary Schools are hosting open houses this Winter. It’s an opportunity to learn about the programs offered, meet potential teachers and classmates and see what is unique about each school community.

SCC’s First international food fair was a hit!

St. Charles College students from three different clubs, the International English Café, Model United Nations Club and Student Council worked in collaboration in promoting and organizing their country booths to create such a successful annual food festival.

The international food fair was comprised of 25 countries from around the world that predominantly symbolized the cultural diversity that is most evident throughout the school. Countries like China, Philippines, Vietnam, Japan, Russia, Mexico, Greece, Italy and much more were represented with fine décor, music and home made food .

The importance of this event was to allow students and teachers to come together as a school community to promote an inclusive learning environment, while taking an interest in building cultural diversity within the school. The students gained a thorough understanding of the importance of multiculturalism through our community.

The event was held Thursday, November 15th, from 10:00-1:00pm; where over 700 students from grades 7-12 participated, enjoyed the delicious foods and learned about the various countries on display.

St. Charles College Honours Treaty Relationship

In honouring the significance of treaties and the treaty relationship, we have two students helping to raise a special flag in our front foyer. Madison Solomon and Hannah Morningstar are both descendants of Chief Shawenekezhik, a signatory to the Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850. In raising the flag with Madison and Hannah, we would like to acknowledge that we are in the Robinson Huron Treaty territory. St. Charles College also acknowledges this treaty relationship on our announcements every morning.

Student Senate organizes board game night for international students!

Student Senate brought together our school community with a special board game night at Café One! The night brought together 31 students from St. Benedict C.S.S, Bishop Alexander Carter C.S.S, St. Charles College and Marymount Academy. Fun was had by all as students were able to play games, make new friends and even indulge in a few treats!

St. Charles College raises 133,000 cans for Sudbury Food Bank!

St. Charles College’s annual food drive brought in 133,000 food items for the Sudbury Food Bank this year. This food drive helps feed our community and helps students learn how to be leaders. It teaches them the value of hard work and allows them to empathize with others who are less fortunate. The students filmed and edited a video -which is on our youtube site- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=old6eMRO0S0. They also spent their evenings and weekend at various grocery stores bagging groceries and collecting cans. Other students went door-to-door to collect.

Feeder schools, Holy Trinity, St. Paul, St. John, Pius XII, St. Francis, and St. David also played a big role in collecting cans. They support the food drive every year and they are a huge part of its success.

SCC Staff and Students Welcome International Students with Open Arms!

Today was about welcoming and celebrating our international students in taking a big leap forward and stepping out of their comfort zone to meet new friends and build on their English speaking skills. Every Tuesday and Thursday during lunch, the English Café run by Mrs. Blackwell and Mrs. Sanowar is open not only for international and ELL Learners, but for our domestic students to have the opportunity to introduce themselves and make new friends.
Some of our 9 and 10 English students extended their warm wishes in writing the international students a personal message to welcome them to our SCC community and describe what it means to be a true “Cardinal”.

Mckenna Annett, a grade 9 student writes, “Hi! Welcome to St. Charles. We hope you have a good high school experience here. Remember once a card, always a card! We hope you enjoy sports teams and clubs to meet new people”.

The English Café is a social club that runs interactive cultural activities, games, and dance offs and plans upcoming educational trips to Toronto, Niagara Falls and Killarney throughout the year. This is an interactive space for students to feel comfortable, supported and accepted in sharing their cultural differences.

Our international students can give international experience to our own SCC students, expand our worldview, and learn the value of linguistic and cultural diversity. Our current student population demographics are changing and we are proud – this is significant and life changing for all, as we become a much more welcoming and inclusive society.

St. Charles College student Dana Lewis was crowned Miss Wikwemkoong

St. Charles College Student Dana Lewis was crowned Miss Wiikwemkoong during the Wiikwemkoong Cultural Festival in August. Dana, who is the goalie for the St. Charles College Girls Hockey team used her hockey skills in the talent portion of the pageant. She also won first place in the biography portion helping her to earn her Crown. Dana stated that she is very excited and honoured to represent her community at various events, celebrations and pow wows as Miss Wiikwemkoong. She was invited to speak about the missing and murdered Indigenous Women at the Sisters in Spirit Conference in October.

In Dana’s biography she wrote: “Giving back to the community is a big part of who I am. At a young age I was provided with the teachings and knowledge for sewing and over the past years I started teaching young girls ages 7-12 how to sew. I facilitate many workshops showing the youth how to make their own regalia, hand drum bags, ribbon skirts. By teaching these youth, I’m passing down my knowledge of our culture for the next generation. I believe that we should be encouraging our next generations to continue with these teachings so they can teach the next ones. This is who I am, a daughter, sister, auntie, teammate, role model, teacher. I believe that becoming a leader takes time, and that Miss Wiikwemikoong will provide me with the experience to one day be a strong leader for my community, my people, my nation.”

St. Charles College is proud and honoured to celebrate Dana’s triumph with her, her family and community.
