It was all in the name of building new friendships for the future students of Holy Trinity Catholic School in an active and healthy way!
Families of children who currently attend St. Andrew, St. Bernadette and St. Raphael Catholic Elementary Schools came together in the gymnasium at St. Charles College on April 16th, 2015 to participate in a fun-filled evening of Zumba and Yoga. Many parents and teachers enthusiastically took to the gymnasium floor and the gym mats to participate in the exercises!
The night was made possible through the funding of a Ministry of Education Parents Reaching Out grant focused on increasing parental engagement in education.
As gracious hosts, the St. Bernadette School families collected items to create gift baskets with themes like “cooking with family”, “a family indoor movie night” and “outdoor family activities”. Sudbury & District Health Unit Public Health Nurses, Stacey Gilbeau and KC Rautiainen, also joined in the amusements and helped out by drawing the winners of the three baskets at the end of the evening.

Learning about Métis Culture at Sudbury Catholic Schools
The Grade 4 French Immersion students at St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School attended a Métis presentation Tuesday, April 14th at St. David Catholic Elementary school. The students enjoyed a presentation by Scott Carpenter, a Community Development Officer with the Metis Nation of Ontario, who shared stories about the Métis culture, and taught the students about different tools, toys and clothing used by the Métis people. The students enjoyed being able to feel the various furs and learn about what each tool was used for during the War of 1812. The students were especially excited to try out the games the Métis children enjoyed.

Snowshoe adventure

Students were thrilled to bump into the building site of their future elementary school, Holy Trinity Catholic School, scheduled to open its doors in September 2015.
Needless to say their snow shoeing adventure was extraordinary and certainly memorable!
Grade 1 class reflects on Christmas miracle with special visitors from SCC
Each year the students in Mme Perrin’s Grade 1 class at St. Bernadette Catholic School reflect upon the miracle of the coming of our saviour, Jesus. Together with friends from Mrs Sauve’s, Human Growth Class at St. Charles College, the students extended their knowledge of the story of Christ’s birth by building a crèche.
Christmas Arts Spectacular tonight at St. Charles College
This morning, students at the feeder schools were wowed by the magical performances of St. Charles’ performing arts students.
The yearly Christmas concert featured MC Jenna Daypuk belting out “Let it Go” from Disney’s “Frozen” which created a sing along by some 550 grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 students.
Other highlights include the choir and band ensembles as well as Parker Szilva and Ava Danyluk singing “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”.
The Arts concert is open to the public this evening, Thursday, December 11th at 7 p.m. in the St. Charles College gymnasium.
Christmas for Kids Campaign in full swing at St. Charles College
Each year, the students at St. Charles College join forces with the students in their homeroom to help put gifts under the Christmas tree in a home somewhere in Sudbury.
Deacon Steve Callaghan organizes the campaign with the administrators working in the eight feeder schools – St. Bernadette, St. Andrew, St. John, Pius, St. Paul, St. Mark, St. David and St. Raphael. Deacon Steve says “The administrators at each of these schools know which family is in dire need of support and what life is like for them.”
After students are selected, the child writes a letter to Santa and each homeroom “adopts” one of the children. Money is then raised during the month in the mission envelope. All money is then given to a designated student on December 11th so that the shopping can be done.
Deacon Steve Callaghan then brings the wrapped gifts to the school principal on December 17th and 18th and the principal contacts the family for pick-up. He says, “When the principal and the secretary see us hauling in present after present – they are overwhelmed and often cry because of the generosity of our children.”
St. Bernadette students stand up for peace
To celebrate anti-bullying week St. Bernadette students wore blue to signify that they Stand Up! for La paix! St. Bernadette School’s motto is “La paix c’est notre priorité.”
Director Joanne Bénard in the hot seat at St. Bernadette
During her recent visit to St. Bernadette Catholic School, Director of Education Joanne Bénard sat in the “hot seat” with students in Grades 3 through 6.
The Director joined in as students used an application on their iPads called Puppet Pals to practise their French language oral communication skills. Students recorded themselves interviewing each other and they asked and answered questions “en français”. Once the interviews were over, students shared their creations with their classmates using the SmartBoard. Mme Perron (Gr. 3), Mme Chevrier (Gr. 4) and Mme Therrien (Gr. 5/6) have been team-teaching with a focus on increasing self-confidence, motivation and engagement for second language French Immersion students for the past school year. “Students are always enthusiastic to participate in authentic opportunities to use their oral communication skills. Using technology to enhance their performance is a very successful approach!”, stated Mme Perron. Mme Therrien said, “The students were thrilled when Mme Bénard partnered with Grade 5 student, Sabrina Crossthwaite! Interviewing the Director of Education, en français, a great opportunity to showcase how well our students are able to communicate in their second language!”
