St. Anne Food Drive, A Huge Success!
Congratulations to St. Anne Catholic School on their extremely successful food drive before the holidays. The drive was spearheaded by Grade 5 teacher, Mr. Michael Cayen, and saw over 7,000 food items collected. All items were donated to the Knights of Columbus in Hanmer
Mr. David Martin’s class not only met, but surpassed his challenge. As a result, Mr. Martin agreed to shave his head. Grade 7 and 8 students looked on eagerly and actively participated in the head shaving. Hanmer families will benefit from the generous spirit of students, their families and others who have donated time, food and money to the St. Anne Catholic School Food Drive.

Regals Celebrate Grade 8 Day!
More than 200 girls from ten of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s elementary schools were given the opportunity to take part in Marymount Academy’s Grade 8 Day Festivities recently.
The energetic and highly interactive performance, set in a talk
show theme, captured the enthusiasm of the young students. Lead by the Marymount band, Bad Ink, the entire assembly rocked, danced and cheered in a celebration of ‘life at Marymount’.
Multimedia presentations, along with student interviews offered insights into the numerous clubs, activities and organizations at the school. Following the presentation, the students enjoyed a pizza lunch and had the opportunity to speak with a number of secondary school teachers. The day was a huge success with all students leaving with a greater appreciation of the amazing and unique environment of Marymount Academy.
SCDSB Elects Chair and Vice-Chair For 2005-06
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board held elections for the positions of chair and vice-chair at the regular meeting of the board at the Catholic Education Centre on December 6, 2005. Paula Peroni, a longtime Trustee with the Board was acclaimed during the meeting and returns as Board Chair for the second consecutive year.
Mrs. Peroni served as Chair of the Board on three previous occasions in 2000, 2001 and 2004 and is currently an executive member of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) and the Canadian Catholic School Trustees’ Association (CCSTA). In claiming her role as chair, Peroni is looking forward to the guiding the Sudbury Catholic District School Board through many of the challenges that lay ahead.
“With labour peace in our schools guaranteed for at least the next three years, now is the time for the provincial government to address the shortcomings inherent in the education formula,” stated Peroni. “I along with my fellow Trustees, colleagues at the Ontario Catholic Schools Trustees Association and representatives from all School Boards in Ontario will be pressuring this government to increase the funding benchmarks for salaries and benefits over the next year. The implementation of a coordinated model of care and service for children with special needs is also a matter that deserves a great deal of attention,” concluded Peroni.
Barry MacDonald, having been elected as a Trustee with the Sudbury Catholic Board in December 2004 was also acclaimed and returns for a second year in the position of Vice-Chair. “I would like to thank my fellow Trustees for their vote of confidence in granting me the opportunity to become vice-chair for a second term,” stated MacDonald. “I would also like to congratulate Paula Peroni on returning to her position as Chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. The Board has experienced excellent leadership under Trustee Peroni’s tutelage and I look forward to working with her, my fellow trustees and Board administration in continuing to deliver quality Catholic education for our students.”
Local Red Cross Recognized for Work in SCDSB Schools
Danielle Gelinas, Community Service Coordinator for the Canadian Red Cross Society, Sudbury recently received the Ontario School Counsellors Assocation (OSCA) Appreciation award at the OSCA Conference in Toronto. Danielle and the Canadian Red Cross Society, Sudbury were nominated by Maurizio Visentin, Guidance Counsellor at
St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School.
The award was presented to the Red Cross in recognition for their educational partnership work with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s secondary schools. St. Benedict and Bishop Alexander Catholic Secondary Schools have invited the Canadian Red Cross to address and reinforce expectations in the Choices Into Action and Healthy Active Living Ministry of Education documents.

St. Francis Catholic School Hosts SCDSB Boy’s and Girl’s Invitational Volleyball Tournaments
St. Francis Catholic School hosted the SCDSB Boy’s and Girl’s Invitational Volleyball Tournaments recently. A total of 12 teams participated in the boy’s tournament with 14 teams participating in the girl’s division.
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board would like to thank all of the coaches and volunteers who continue to give of their own time to attend practices and volleyball tournaments. Also, thank you to Mr. Jean Gallien who continues to do such an amazing job organizing and running our volleyball tournaments.
