The staff and students of St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School enjoyed an afternoon of fun on March 20 as part of the the board Franco-Fun Day. The day began with singing Oh Canada in french and then a short description of the Franco-Ontario flag. The Core French teacher Mme. Price arranged an afternoon of fun activities including Salut (bingo), Musical chairs, fait moi un design (drawing out a given french word from the word list), mon beau drapeau (design core french flags) escargot (hopscotch) and a short french cartoon. Mme. Price and her Mother-in-law made homemade petes de soeurs as a treat for everyone. This was a great day of community building as the older Core French students helped the younger primary aged students with all the activities. Pictured is Noah and his team as they played escargot.

Sizzling Science at SCDSB Science Fair
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board would like to congratulate the following students and schools on their excellent achievements at recent Board-Wide Science Fair on March 26. After the judges had completed their task, thirteen projects were selected to advance to the Regional Science Fair to be held at Laurentian University on April 12th, 2014.

St. Andrew Receives Thanks
On Friday March 28th representatives from Samaritan’s Purse/Operation Christmas Child visited the staff and students of St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School. The students were given first hand descriptions of “shoe boxes” reaching children in the third world. St. Andrew School has participated in this social justice endeavour for the past two years and intend on participating once again next December. Students and their families gather small gift itemsfor either a boy or girl and place them in a shoe box. PIctured is a proud Mrs. Henry (principal) and the two Samaritan Purse representatives as they give her a thank you plague to place in the school foyer.
Twin Day at St. Charles Elementary – Would the Real Mr. Soehner, please stand up?!
The RAM school spirit was alive and thriving at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School once again! Staff and students coordinated outfits to look like a twin or someone they admired. They were seeing double all day as they travelled the halls!
Buddy Luoma, a year one FDK student, wanted to dress like his principal, Mr. David Soehner. They both planned to dress the same. On the morning of Twin Day, Buddy stopped in at the office to show Mr. Soehner how he was dressed up just like the principal. Much to Mr. Soehner’s surprise, several students and staff also dressed up in the black pants, dress shirts and ties!! By lunch time there were 18 Mr. Soehners walking around the school, complete with ID badges and all!
Celebrating Franco-Fun Day at St. Bernadette
March 20th, 2014 was Franco-Ontario Day at St. Bernadette Catholic School! Maxx, Tyler and Carter were busy making green and white cookies to help celebrate ” the love of our rich French heritage.” YUM!
SCDSB Band Enjoying a Successful Season
The Sudbury Catholic Elementary Band, directed by Vice Principal JoAnne Comisso and teaher Leanne Urso, has just finished a very successful Festival season. On February 27 the students performed at the Northern Ontario Music Festival, held at Sudbury Secondary School, where the students received a Silver award. To follow up that achievement, they competed at the Kiwanis Music Festival on March 24 at St. Benedict School. The band was very excited to receive a Gold award! All their hard work is definitely paying off, and we wish them continued success as they head into their spring concert season. This band is comprised of students from St. Anne, St. Benedict, St. Raphael and Pius XII Catholic Elementary Schools.
Franco-Fun at St. Ben’s
Students at St Benedict Catholic Secondary School participated actively in an afternoon of Franco Fun Day activities on Friday March 21st 2014. The students were submerged in the French culture, music, language, and food in a series of challenges which involved some friendly competition againstt each other for a chance to participate in the grand finale. There were many laughs shared as the day was a huge success and enjoyed by all!
Career Presentation at St. Andrew
The junior students at St. Andrew School enjoyed an interactive presentation from Dr. Adam Ball a local chiropractor and owner of the Crossfit Gym in Sudbury on Tuesday March 25th. Students learned that Dr. Ball attended school for 24 years to become a doctor of chiropractics. He chose this field because he saw a need to help people attain good health through nutrition and exercise. Students learned to practice proper posture and how to do squats to improve mobility and strength. Pictured is Dr. Ball and Rachel Uguccioni.
Marymount Regals Take OFSSA Curling Gold
The Marymount Regals curling team came home OFSAA champions this past weekend with an 8-3 win over Brockville in Brampton. The team, consisting of skip Krysta Burns, vice, Monica Graham, second Cynthia Furlotte and lead Kaylyn Collin and Kayla Nickson were elated with their gold medal win and the school’s second curling crown ever, and first since 1981. Team coach/teacher Brenda Thompson was extremely proud of the girls and was thrilled that they played so well and remained undefeated during every round. “I, as well as the rest of the school, are so proud of this team and their commitment to playing to the best of their ability,” Thompson said. “ Many of the students and staff were able to watch the final game line online, and were ecstatic to see the team crowned as the provincial champions, which is an absolutely incredible accomplishment!”
