Pius XII Students Embrace French Culture Through Manie Musicale

Junior Core French Students at Pius XII Catholic School have been immersing themselves in the world of French music through Manie Musicale, an international “battle of the bands” competition that took place this past March. The competition features artists from French-speaking countries worldwide, allowing students to explore the diversity of the Francophone world through music.

Under the guidance of Miss Cousineau, students joined schools from across Canada and the United States in this engaging musical event. As part of the experience, students have been listening to songs, watching music videos, and sharing their opinions in French. They have also been actively involved in the competition by voting for their favourite songs, predicting which one will win the contest.

“This is an incredible opportunity for students to experience French language and culture in a fun, meaningful way,” said Core French Elementary Prep Teacher, Michelle Cousineau. “It broadens their understanding of how widely French is spoken and helps them connect with the language through music.”

According to the school, by participating in Manie Musicale, Pius XII students are not only strengthening their French skills but also developing a deeper appreciation for the global Francophone community.

St. David School Receives Sports Equipment Donation from Jays Care Foundation

St. David School is excited to thank the Jays Care Foundation’s RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) Program for their generous donation of sports equipment, including baseball gear, Blue Jays caps, and shirts for our students.

The RBI Program helps bring baseball and softball to young people who may not have access to these opportunities. Thanks to this donation, St. David students will be able to enjoy the game, build teamwork and discipline, and connect with the Blue Jays community.

A special thank you to Mr. Mailloux, who worked hard to apply for and receive this grant. He has also volunteered his time to support the program and has been involved in Blue Jays after-school training. His dedication to the students and the program is truly appreciated.

Thank you again to Jays Care Foundation and Mr. Mailloux for making this possible and supporting our students in such a meaningful way!

St. Charles Catholic Elementary School Choir Delights at Board Meeting

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board extends its heartfelt gratitude to the St. Charles Catholic Elementary School Choir for their outstanding performance at the recent Board meeting.

The choir’s incredible voices brought a sense of joy and warmth to the event, creating a memorable moment for all in attendance. Their dedication and talent were evident in every note, showcasing the spirit of community and creativity that the Board proudly supports.

Laurentian University Experts Bring Geoscience to Life for St. David Students

Students at St. David School had an exciting opportunity to explore the world of geoscience during a special visit from Laurentian University experts. Geoscience Technologist Cailyn Morgan and Professor Tobias Roth engaged Grade 4 and Grade 4/5 students in a hands-on learning experience about rocks and minerals.

Through interactive exploration, students examined various geological specimens and even had the chance to try on the specialized gear used by geoscientists in the field—learning firsthand just how heavy the equipment can be! The session provided a deeper understanding of Earth Sciences and sparked curiosity about the natural world.

Sudbury Catholic Schools extends its gratitude to Cailyn Morgan and Tobias Roth for an engaging and educational morning that brought science to life for our students.

A Sweet Start to Lent: Shrove Tuesday Celebration at the Catholic Education Centre

Today, staff at the Catholic Education Centre (CEC) gathered to celebrate Shrove Tuesday with a delicious pancake breakfast! From flipping pancakes to sharing a meal, it was a wonderful way to come together before the Lenten season begins on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

In addition to the Catholic Education Centre, students and staff across our schools are marking Shrove Tuesday. Traditionally, this day is a time for reflection, reconciliation, and preparation for the Lenten journey. The word “shrove” comes from the old English word “shrive,” meaning to confess and receive absolution.

Pancakes have long been a symbol of this day, as people historically used up rich ingredients like eggs, milk, and butter before the Lenten season of fasting and prayer. As we gather to share in this tradition in our own unique ways, we are reminded of the importance of faith, repentance, and renewal.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated school volunteers who help bring this tradition to life for students! May this celebration prepare our hearts for the solemn and prayerful season of Lent.

Immaculate Conception Catholic School Celebrates the Virtue of Compassion

Last week, the Immaculate Conception Catholic School community came together to celebrate the virtue of the month; Compassion, recognizing students who exemplified kindness, empathy, and a commitment to helping others.

Students were honoured for their meaningful actions, whether through offering a helping hand to a classmate in need or sharing words of encouragement. Their gestures, both big and small, reflected the true spirit of compassion and the values at the heart of our school community.

A special thank-you goes to Mrs. Mailloux’s Grade 3/4 class, who led the school in a moving reflection, inspiring all to continue fostering a culture of care and support.

Sudbury Catholic District School Board Hosts First Round Dance at Marymount Academy

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s Indigenous Education Team proudly hosted its first Round Dance at Marymount Academy, bringing together staff, students, families, and community members for an evening of ceremony, unity, and celebration.

The event created a welcoming space for participants to connect through song and dance while fostering a deeper appreciation for Indigenous culture. Guided by the wisdom and leadership of Elders, a Pipe Carrier, a Stickman, an MC, Singers, and dedicated volunteers, the gathering honored the spirit of community and reconciliation.

“We are grateful to everyone who contributed to this special event,” said Ginette Toivonen, Indigenous Education Facilitator for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “The Round Dance was a meaningful opportunity for learning and connection, and we look forward to continuing to celebrate and support Indigenous education by hosting more events like this in the future for our community.”

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board remains committed to promoting cultural awareness and creating inclusive spaces where Indigenous traditions are honoured and shared.

Growing Young Minds in the Great Outdoors: Outdoor Learning in Kindergarten

Did you know that outdoor learning is a game-changer for young children? At Sudbury Catholic Schools we believe in providing students with meaningful experiences that foster both learning and well-being. Our kindergarten students at St. David recently had an exciting opportunity to take their classroom outdoors, exploring nature while developing essential physical literacy skills.

Led by Mr. Atkinson, this engaging outdoor activity encouraged students to connect with the environment, stay active, and develop important skills such as creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. Research shows that hands-on learning in natural settings enhances cognitive development, promotes physical health, and nurtures a lifelong appreciation for the world around us.

We extend our gratitude to our dedicated teachers for making learning both fun and enriching. Through outdoor exploration, we are shaping curious, confident, and resilient learners—one adventure at a time!

Together in Service: St. Benedict, Holy Cross, and St. David Schools Raise Over $28,000 for the Sudbury Food Bank

In partnership with the Sudbury Food Bank, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is proud to celebrate the success of St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School’s second annual Food Drive. This year, the school community, with help from Holy Cross and St. David Elementary Schools raised $28,056.70 and collected 2,100 cans to support individuals and families in need across the Sudbury region. This marks an increase of $6,552.83 from last year’s total of $21,503.95, highlighting the school’s continued dedication to giving back to the community.

The Food Drive, a cornerstone of St. Benedict’s holiday initiatives, reflects the school’s strong commitment to social justice. The Christmas season provides an opportunity to support local food banks, particularly during a time when the need is greater than ever. According to Food Banks Canada, March 2024 saw over 2 million visits to food banks nationwide, a record high underscoring the urgency of addressing food insecurity.

The Food Drive campaign ran from November 25 to December 11, featuring several impactful initiatives that brought the community together: 

  • St. Benedict students prepared and served pasta dinners for families, students, and community members at St. Benedict and Holy Cross.
  • St. Benedict students collected donations at Chris’ Your Independent Grocer and Messier’s Your Independent Grocer.
  • St. Benedict’s fundraising team organized a class competition to raise funds, fostering teamwork and school spirit.
  • Representative St. Benedict Bears also attended both Holy Cross and St. David Elementary schools for a pep rally, that energized their school partners to join forces in collecting monetary donations and non-perishable food items. 

“This initiative has given our students a chance to reflect on their blessings, connect with their community, and develop leadership skills through community service,” said Principal Beverley Belanger. “We are deeply grateful to all our contributors; this includes our students, staff, families, elementary schools, and, of course, our local partners, including Messier’s Your Independent Grocer, Chris’ Your Independent Grocer, Caruso Club, and Vito Brand Meats, whose support made this achievement possible.”

“I’m truly inspired by the way our school community came together to support those in need this year,” said David Akero, St. Benedict student and Sudbury Catholic District School Board Student Trustee. “The Food Drive showed us the importance of food banks and the meaningful accomplishments we can achieve by coming together as a community.”
