MMA & CYGA Visit the Idywylde

On Tuesday, October 29th fifteen students from Marymount Academy’s Gr. 11 Fitness Class visited the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club for a Day Event as part of the Canadian Youth Golf Alliance’s (CYGA) Search for Self I course. The students have been studying philosophy of life issues under the instruction Ryan Cooney, founder of the CYGA every three weeks. The program is a voluntary one that the students are offered and the feedback has been nothing but incredibly positive. Brandon Beeson, chairman and Northern Ontario Director of the CYGA says that “the partnership with Marymount Academy over the past couple of years has been wonderful. The students are eager, very cooperative, and appreciate the opportunities that are presented to them with the CYGA. The Canadian Youth Golf Alliance is a not-for-profit organization that focuses on assisting youth in “at-risk” environments with issues that they sometimes struggle with that surround every day discussions. Dan Bartolucci, teacher at Marymount Academy and the CYGA Board’s Education Chair agrees that “the opportunities presented to these youth through the programs offered by the CYGA are outstanding. Last year, the CYGA employed 28 youth from around the province and three of these youth were Marymount students”.

The Day Event at the Idylwylde offered seminars by the managers of a number of departments from greenskeeping and course management to event coordination, to every day bookings through the pro shop. For more information about the CYGA please visit:

Everyday They’re Shuffling

In secondary school, a culminating wrap-up assignment can look like something that is done with a pen and paper or it can be a little more active and impacting.

That’s why the St. Charles College grade 9 girls’ physical education class run by teachers Chantal Dagostino and Sean Gilroy is training to participate in the Salvation Army’s Santa Shuffle Fun Run and Elf Walk.

Almost forty of the students have been training hard for what they are calling the “First Annual SCC Back to Basics Run/Walk/Santa Shuffle”.

The class has also teamed up with teacher Beverly Belanger’s Leadership class. The students are promoting active living as well as supporting the Salvation Army women and Families of Sudbury to make Christmas a possibility for everyone.

Dagostino says “the aim is to start a yearly trend as well as have 100 participants including staff members and students take part this year alone. This way their culminating activity in this class is far-reaching.”

Running St. Anne Angels are on the Move

Students at St. Anne Catholic School in Hanmer have recently started their Angels Running Crew. This running club is in its second year, and students were eager to hit the ground running.
St. Anne students in Grades 4 to 8 have signed up for this activity that will lead them to a healthy lifestyle that includes getting regular exercise. They are encouraged to set their own personal goals throughout the year and persevere to achieve them. Students will learn correct form of running, proper nutrition for health, and how to build endurance to run longer distances. “I really enjoy the running club because I like participating in all the teams and clubs that St. Anne has to offer,” said Abby Gladu, a Grade 6 student at St. Anne Catholic School in Hanmer.
Students will have an opportunity to participate in various events around the city, such as the Sudbury Santa Shuffle and Sudbury Rocks Races.
With only their first practice under their belt, these Sudbury Catholic Schools students ran a combined distance of over 57 kilometres, all during a 40 minute lunch break. Some of these students even reached distances of 4 kilometres on their own at the first practice. Way to go Angels!

St. John Catholic Elementary School Walks for Terry

In an effort to ensure that Terry Fox’ legacy remains vibrant and relevant, all staff and students from kindergarten to Grade 8 walked for Terry. Students were made aware that as the future generation, they are the key to helping to make a difference in the world! St. John student Logan Vaillancourt proudly shows off his Terry Fox t-shirt during the school’s walk.

St. John Students Shine at Laurentian X-C Running Challenge

On September 26th, 2013, over 800 students from across Greater Sudbury elementary schools participated in the Laurentian X-C Running Challenge at Laurentian University.  St.John’s student, Shane Poitras, brought home the gold in the Senior Elementary Boys Division with a record time of 12:07, placing him 1st among 223 grade 7 & 8 boys.  Shane has proven to be an exceptional athlete and we are overwhelmingly proud of his admirable victory!  As well, Hannah Whyte placed 4th in the Junior Elementary Girls Division and Colin Burrell placed 3rd in the Junior Elementary Boys Division.  Overall, St. John’s team ranked 2nd for Junior Girls, 3rd for Junior Boys, and 6th for Senior Boys of over 20 schools!  Coaches Cori Walker and Tania Vaillancourt are tremendously proud of all of their athletes for their dedication, positive attitudes, and perseverance!

Bishop ACCSS Holds Club and Sports Fair

Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School hosted a Grade 9 Club and Sports Fair during the third week of school. Often Grade 9 students find entering Grade 9 and a new high school scary or intimidating. The staff and students at Bishop want students to feel comfortable in their new school and want to encourage students to get involved. Many studies speak to the importance of students getting involved in their school. Students who are involved in any extra curricular activity (sports or clubs) are more likely to stay in school and report higher levels of engagement. Grade 9 students had the opportunity to see the many clubs and sports teams at the school during their annual Club and Sports Fair. Senior students at the school were responsible for setting up a booth and promoting their activity to the Grade 9 students. The Grade 9 students were able to sign up for a club/sport and enjoyed seeing what the school had to offer.

Cards show their Faith

St. Charles Cardinals celebrated its first mass of the school season on Thursday, September 12, 2013. More than nine hundred fifty students attended mass in the school gymnasium with Father Jim Ketzler of St. John’s parish presiding. Students are always invited to assist as servers at the masses. This month, it was the senior football team members who assisted with the procession and helping Father Jim. Kudos for the St. Paul Panthers

On Thursday, June 13, representatives from the Canadian Diabetes Association were on hand at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School to present the St. Paul Panthers Running team with two banners. The students and staff that make up this club had participated in the 2013 Sudbury Rocks race, and were thrilled to be acknowledged for their efforts. The group was presented with the Sudbury Rocks School Challenge banner for Highest Percentage of Participation for an Elementary School, as well as Highest Amount of Pledges raised for an Elementary School. Stacey Vendramin, a teacher at the school as well as a running coach for the team was thrilled with the presentation for the students. “It is a great group of kids that really embraced the running challenge,” Vendramin stated. “They really enjoyed themselves and recognized the importance of being physically active and working together as a group. We are looking forward to future running events!”
