SCDSB Students Captivated by Smart Youth Power Assembly

Norbert Georget presented a powerful presentation on teenage drinking and driving, substance abuse and peer pressure to secondary students from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board at the United Steel Workers Hall recently. The Smart Youth Power Assembly is a hard hitting, graphic and compelling presentation on the consequences of drinking and driving, alcohol and drug abuse and teen suicide with respect to today’s youth.

Norbert has delivered his Smart Youth Power Assembly to over one million students in 2,000 schools throughout Canada and the United States. He is an internationally renowned speaker, student motivator and paramedic with over 22 years experience. The Smart Youth Power Assembly began as a hobby on Norbert Georget’s days off but quickly turned into a full time commitment speaking to thousands of youths across North America.

A teacher in the truest sense of the word, Norbert knows young people and what problems they face. His audience was captivated by his exuberant presentation that was entertaining, enlightening and powerful. Norbert Georget received the Saskatchewan R.G. Olson Emergency Medical Services Award in 1991, the Saskatchewan Safety Council Award in 1989, a Certificate of Appreciation from British Columbia’s Counter Attack Program and he was also the recipient of the 1988 Provincial Safe Grad Recognition Award in Saskatchewan.

St. Charles College, ESP Program Recognized by Greater Sudbury Police Force

St. Charles College and the Empowered Student Partnerships (ESP) were honoured for the many initiatives dedicated to enhancing school and community safety by the City Greater Sudbury’s Police Services Board. St. Charles College was the first school in community to spearhead the ESP initiative in partnership with the Greater Sudbury Police Services.

Since January 2004 the ESP committee has hosted exhibition basketball games, various guest speakers, dance theatre and numerous other awareness/educational campaigns. At the request of the Greater Sudbury Police Services, Ms. Salvador, Ms. Mayer and student moderator, Kayla Martell were honoured with Certificates of Appreciation for their on-going commitment to enhancing community safety through the Empowered Student Partnerships.

In addition to receiving the Police/Community Partnerships Award, presented by Ray Bonin M.P. Nickel Belt, St. Charles College was also presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Greater Sudbury Police Services Board and a Certificate of Recognition from Rick Bartolucci, M.P.P. Sudbury.

SCDSB Presents Dearness Environmental Society Initial In-Service for Year 5

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board will be presenting the first In-service of Year 5 for new Dearness Conservation (DC)Teachers on Tuesday, December 6, 2005 at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s Catholic Education Centre.

The day’s agenda will include an overview of the big picture regarding the global need to reduce consumption, a report from the Board’s facility services re the rebate that each school will be receiving from the energy savings for Year 4 of the DC Program, and an on-line presentation on the new SCDSB Conservation Website.

Dearness Conservation is a multi-year program designed for school boards to improve their energy use, water consumption and waste management practices. A co-operative team of students, teachers, principals and custodians work together with DC to help schools conserve resources and protect the environment.

Fast Eddy McDonald Visits St. John Catholic School

Toronto born yo yo champ Fast Eddy McDonald recently visited St John School to demonstrate with yoyos how students need to practice in order to succeed. The workshop was fascinating and absorbing for both students and parents, who were also invited to attend. The three time Guiness World Record holder has given similar workshops across the province where he is always enthusiastically received.

St. Charles College Student Awarded YMCA Canada Peace Medal

Kayla Martell, a Grade 12 student at St. Charles College, was presented with the YMCA Canada Peace Medal at the Rotary Club of Sudbury’s Sunrisers breakfast meeting held at the YMCA Sudbury. Kayla has used her personal strengths and talents to work at creating a safer community. Her vision and commitment to creating a climate of respect and acceptance for everyone, regardless of differences, has resulted in a significant change in the school climate.

Kayla has assumed a leadership role with the Empowered Student Partnerships program at St. Charles College and promoted numerous initiatives designed to create awareness related to student and school safety. Her enthusiasm never wavers, resulting in the Greater Sudbury Police Services Board presenting her recently with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Kayla continues to inspire peers and teachers alike with her vision and commitment. She shares and promotes her goal of creating a climate of respect and acceptance where everyone feels valued. Congratulations Kayla!
