remain open, according to reports from Regional Police, OPP and MTO, it appears that road conditions may deteriorate.
School boards therefore ENCOURAGE PARENTS TO PICK UP THEIR CHILDREN AT SCHOOL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Due to the upcoming ice storm, road conditions and in the interest of safety, all school related transportation services for English catholic, English public, French catholic and French public schools, operating in the districts of SUDBURY, ESPANOLA, MASSEY AND MANITOULIN are cancelled today. All schools will remain open, however, NO transportation will be provided. Parents who transport their children to school are reminded that they must pick their children up at the end of the school day.
The School Boards advise students and parents that secondary school exams taking place today will be rescheduled to tomorrow. Please check your school’s website, or call the school, for revisions to the exam schedule.
Pius XII Catholic Elementary School celebrated Family Literacy Day, a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27th to raise awareness fo the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. The theme this year is ’15 Minutes of Fun’. Pius XII welcomed parents, aunts/uncles and grandparents to come and have ’15 Minutes of Fun’ with their child(ren).
On Friday January 25th the staff and students of St. Andrew Catholic School donned their favourite hockey jerseys to celebrate the school’s annual Hockey Sweater Spirit Day. Staff and students welcomed Father Sam D’Angelo and Staff Sergeant Rick Waugh as guests who read hockey related story books to the children in all the classes. The older students enjoyed The Greatest Goal by Mike Leonetti and the younger students enjoyed Brady Brady and the Puck on the Pond by Mary Shaw and Chuck Temple. St. John Catholic Elementary School Secretary, Tara Large and Lunchroom Supervisor, Pat Burell show off some crafted recycled bags. Pat Burell likes to recycle, and sewed up Jammer cooler bags & pencil cases. She explains that the process is quite simple from cutting the bags to sewing them up. It teaches children that many everyday items can be recycled into a useful products. At St. John, staff teach that recycling is fun and every morning the announcements provide the students with useful tips.
Pius XII Catholic Elementary School is one of many of the Sudbury Catholic Schools who have partnered up with the Knights of Columbus for their annual ‘Free Throw Competition’. Since 1972, councils have sponsored the Knights of Columbus International Free Throw Championship for boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 14. Oscar Barowette, a Knights of Columbus member, feels that holding this competition is ‘a great way to get out into the public and introduce the Order to the community — while providing youths with a rewarding activity that yields a chance for local, state or provincial, and international recognition’. Good luck to all Pius Penguins, as well as all other Sudbury Catholic students who are moving on to the next level of competition.
On a very cold January 17, 2013, Sudbury Gospel singer Amy St. John brought her talent and her guitar to St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School to spread some of God’s sunshine and warmth with the staff and students. Amy led the children in several songs. Some of the songs enjoyed were Jesus Loves the Little Children, Jesus Loves me, This Little Light of Mine and many more. Amy’s faith shone forth in her smiles and music and was thoroughly enjoyed by all present.
The grade twelve law class at St. Charles College is celebrating victory after winning the City Mock Trial Championships January 14, 2013 at the Sudbury Courthouse. There were fourteen teams from all four Sudbury school boards competing for the coveted Justice Patricia Hennessy Trophy. Cardinal Miranda Goudreau won the Best Defense Advocate Award for her work on the drug possession and trafficking trial. Goudreau says “I have learned to live and breath Law all semester and it was nice to see all our hard work has paid off. I have never taken part in anything that has compared to this experience and this amount of work.” Teacher Jaime Sauve says “the team set itself above the rest because the oral presentation was excellent and the group came up with loopholes in the case that other groups had not considered.” This is the second time in three years that Sauve’s class at St. Charles College has taken the top prize. There will be no rest for the weary. The team must continue to work towards competing at the Provincial Championships in Toronto this April.
