Laurentian University primary ABQ participants were provided with some hands-on learning at Holy Cross. Students in Mme Sarmatiuk’s grade 3 FI class and Mme Blais-Callaway’s 4/5 FI class led a session on the use and impact of technology in the classroom. Students shared how their learning has been transformed by the use Showbie in their classroom. Students also taught the LU students how Explain Everything works and the benefits of using this app in a variety of subject areas. Students enjoyed the opportunity to “be the experts”.

Flat Stanley Visits St. David Catholic School
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is supporting learning across the border. Mrs. Gardner’s first grade class at Scared Heart School in Lyndhurst, New Jersey read the book “Flat Stanley” by Jeff Brown. It is the story of a boy named Stanley Lambchop. In the story, one night, a bulletin board falls on him and flattens him in his sleep. Stanley lives through the ordeal and makes the best of his new “flatten” state. Stanley discovers that he can be folded up and mailed in an envelope to different places. Stanley visits his friend in California and has a great time.
In supporting the students at Sacred Heart School, in New Jersey, Mrs. Christina Raso, Special Education Consultant for Sudbury Catholic Schools received an envelope in the mail containing Flat Stanley. Mrs. Raso brought Flat Stanley around the city of Sudbury and to the grade one class at St. David Catholic School. Mrs. Cimino’s grade one class read the story “Flat Stanley”, then had the privilege to meet him. Mrs. Raso will soon be mailing “Flat Stanley” back to New Jersey with a journal of his activities while visiting the city of Sudbury, including visiting Mrs. Cimino’s grade one class at St. David School. “It was really neat meeting Flat Stanley. He is really paper flat.” stated Gary Card, grade one student.
St. David School Celebrates Catholic Education Week by Focusing on the Value of Empathy
Rossella Bagnato, Superintendent of Effectiveness for Sudbury Catholic Schools visited Mrs. Cimino’s grade 1 class during Catholic Education Week to teach the students about the importance of empathy. “Empathy helps to create a healthy, loving school community. As a classroom teacher, I see the importance of teaching students to be empathetic at a very young age. Mrs. Bagnato used humour and literacy to connect a Inuit story to my students’ everyday life. They discussed how to build trusting friendships and how to support others less fortunate than themselves. This was all done through the lens of humour and it was a wonderful life lesson.” stated Mrs. Cimino, grade 1 teacher.
St. Charles Elementary Students Embraced Their School!
Staff, students and parents joined together to give our school a big hug, literally!
The hug was a part of Catholic Education Week, and is experiential programming by Heartspeak. The Embrace Your School initiative is about getting students involved in taking an active role in improving their school, and creating an opportunity to invite members of the school community to join them in creating a caring, safe and accepting school.
Clara Steele wins OAPCE Parent of the Year award
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is very pleased to announce that Clara Steele has been selected as this year’s recipient of the OAPCE – Ontario Association of Parents in Catholic Education Parent of the Year Award. This award is presented annually to a parent volunteer that goes above and beyond to support their child’s school and/or school board and supports the aims and goals of OAPCE. Clara is the current chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board Parent Involvement Committee and the chair of the Marymount Academy Catholic School Council and is certainly very deserving of this award.
Her dedication to our schools and school board and to enhancing the parent – school partnership has been exemplary. She is often described as the ‘school Mom’ as she is always there to lend a hand, to support and to listen. She has indeed been an integral and active member of each of the schools that her daughters have attended. “We are proud of the recognition given to Clara Steele as parent of the year by OAPCE. It is a beautiful and well deserved acknowledgement of the dedication and passion that Clara has demonstrated for Catholic education in Greater Sudbury and indeed Ontario”, said Chair of the Board, Michael Belmore. Clara will receive her award at the annual OAPCE gala award dinner in Toronto on May 7th.
Clara was very honoured when informed of this award. “I am completely humbled by this award. I have so enjoyed the past 16 years in our schools working with wonderful students, parents, teachers and administrators. It was truly a labour of love. I wouldn’t trade a minute and I am going to miss you all very much”, said Clara Steele.
Feeding the hungry
As part of the Catholic Education Week celebrations at St. Paul School, Mme Lawrence’s grade 5-6 French Immersion class assisted those who are less fortunate by making over 160 handmade sandwiches for the Elgin Street Mission. By helping those in need, the students showed a great example of stewardship and servant leadership. Mme Lawrence is very proud of her students who collectively completed their classroom mission to make their community a better place. The Elgin Street Mission served their handmade sandwiches that evening.
Youth Mental Health Walk-in offered for secondary students
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board in partnership with the Child and Family Centre is offering a unique service to all our secondary students. We will have a Youth Walk-In Service available on Tuesdays from 10:30am to 6:00pm (last one hour session at 5pm). Starting tomorrow!
Where do you go to see a clinician? Go to the Guidance Area at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School. This service is open to all secondary students, not just those from St. Benedict.

FDK Hatches Chicks
Egg-Citing News at St. David School!
For the past 21 days the Full Day Kindergarten students at St. David Catholic School have been doing an inquiry on chickens. Through books, drama activities, art projects, videos and songs the students have been learning about the hatching process of chicks. This week the students were very excited as they watched 14 new chicks hatch from their eggs in their classroom incubator!
“At St. David School, we strive to provide our students with authentic, hands on learning opportunities. This is an inquiry the entire school gets involved in and looks forward to every year” said Lindsay Michel, FDK teacher. “It builds community through learning, fun and hands-on real life experiences”.
“I learned that when the chicks come out of the incubator they are wet and when they dry off they go in the brooder. I like that my mommy can come to my school and see what we are learning” stated Emma Carlucci, St. David FDK student.
Parents and families that live in the Donovan, Flour Mill and Louis Street areas are reminded that St. David School is hosting it’s “Welcome to Kindergarten” morning on Tuesday May 10 at 11 am. All newly registered kindergarten students and their families are encouraged to attend.
