Community Partnership Benefits Students at St. David School

N.O.A.H. (New Opportunities and Hope), a committee made up of citizens who reside in the Flour Mill and Donavan areas of the city and the Greater Sudbury Police Service Neighbourhood Policing Unit worked in a pro-active capacity to host a fun filled day on the ice for over 100 pre teens and families. The purpose of the “winter safety” event was to provide an opportunity for youth who are from the Flour Mill and Donovan areas of Greater Sudbury to participate in a planned snowmobile ride and to participate in a variety of winter safety workshops.

Approximately 50 community minded snowmobilers provided area youth the opportunity to go for a snowmobile ride which was coordinated by members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service and S.T.O.P. officers. Following the ride, the snowy and frozen landscape served as a classroom where the youth participated in practical winter safety workshops and activities including first aid, healthy lifestyle choices, pre-trip planning, outdoor survival skills, risk and prevention of frostbite/hypothermia and winter water hazards. Participants will witness a live water ice rescue.

Jennifer Gran, grade 5 teacher at St. David Catholic School, stated that she was “impressed by the volunteerism, high level of community organization, and basic emphasis on fun and laughter throughout the day”. Gran stated.” My students learned valuable lessons in winter safety, were able to see local police as their friends and allies and were able to enjoy the winter weather while laughing and learning all at the same time”.

Sudbury Catholic Enhances Social Media Presence with Launch of Facebook Page

As a follow up to the launch of Board’s Social Media initiative, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is extremely excited to announce that it has launched the Sudbury Catholic Facebook Page.

As with the Board’s other social media initiatives, Facebook will be used to celebrate new programming initiatives, school events, upcoming events as well as a means to disseminate any urgent or otherwise important information out to parents, guardians, students and other stakeholders.

“Recognizing that Facebook has over 500 million users and is now used by 1 in every 13 people on earth, we feel that this is an exciting announcement and are encouraged by the interest already by staff, parents, students and community alike.” stated Barry MacDonald, Chair of the Board. “We know that is certainly not a replacement of the one on one conversation of which we encourage first and foremost, however, we feel that this is one more opportunity for us to celebrate our unique programming, school and Board successes, as well as informing the community of any important information that has happened or is upcoming.”

Catherine McCullough, Director of Education for the Board echoed MacDonald’s sentiments regarding the Sudbury Catholic Facebook page launch. “The statistics with Facebook are staggering,” McCullough stated. “Its use is growing so rapidly, we knew that this was an exceptional opportunity for us to enhance our Board’s communication to the system. Along with Twitter, and our Sudbury Catholic Youtube account, our new Facebook page will provide us with one more venue to incorporate social media as a means to connect with the Sudbury community and speaks to our strong commitment to 21st century learning at Sudbury Catholic.”

Sudbury Catholic Schools Celebrate the 100th Day of School

Elementary schools around the province are celebrating the “100th Day of School” this week. Teachers use this celebration day to reinforce required elementary numeracy skills such as — fun, hands on activities that focus on how to count to 100 by ones, twos, fives and tens, as well as sorting and classifying objects into groups. Literacy skills are reinforced by the presentation of thematic books and centres with a focus on oral communication.

At St. David School, the kindergarten class celebrated the day by reading the book “The 100th Day Worries”, created crowns with 100 objects pasted to them — then wore the crowns to celebrate during the day. The celebration ended with the creation of “fruitloop necklaces” — with 100 fruits loops on each.

Celebrating Numeracy Awareness on the 100th day of School

The students in Early Learning Kindergarten at St. Raphael School celebrated the 100th day of school with pomp and pageantry.

Students made books about the number one hundred. They also brought in collections of 100 items from home. The students also made ties to literacy by reading 100 books and even sang songs for the 100th day celebration.

Teacher Rosemary Tripodi and Early Childhood Educator Domenic Vicedomini also got into the spirit by wearing blazers with 100 colourful pom poms attached. They also decked out their classroom with 100 colourful balloons.

Vicedomini says “the day brought number awareness to such a large number”.

Tripodi says “it was also an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments and growth because this is the first year of school for many of the students”.

The day will continue with the creation of 100 Fruit Loop necklaces, and opportunities for the students to present their collections of 100 items.

Bear’s Lessard makes GTA All-Star Roster

St. Benedict football player Erick Lessard will be playing in the GTA all-star football game on Sat April 17th at McMaster University. Lessard, who attended an evaluation camp during the Bears bye week, made the Greater Toronto Area top 100 list. Although he had an early injury in another mini-camp, he was selected as one of the top 45 players.

Locally, Erick was an unanimous selection for SDSSAA all-star, at Offensive Tackle and was one of 4 Bear offensive linemen selected as an all star. Emilio Frometa, Spencer Dailey, and Lineman of the Year, Carter Long, were also selected. Erick helped the Bears return to the playoffs with a 5-3 record, ousting defending champs Notre-Dame, before losing to the eventual city champions, Lasalle.

Known as “Lizard” to his teammates, Erick is blessed with pro size (6’7″, 300 lbs) and has a great work ethic. He impressed coaches at the McMaster “Up Front” Offensive Linemen Camp, and scouts at the All-Pro football camp. Head coach Frank Rocca praises his big lineman, “A physical specimen, and an honour roll student, you don’t find that combo too often. The transformation since his Gr. 9 year has been truly remarkable, just scratching the surface of what he can really do.”

Rocca explains that Lessard has benefited from seeing other Bears going off to play university football both in the CIS, and NCAA. “The path has been set by others over the years, so he knows what he has to do to get there. He has written SAT’s, has a personal trainer and travels to compete againstt the best. For us at St. Benedict, he really stepped up as a leader this year.”

Erick agrees, “It’s nice to be recognized for all the hard work that I am putting in. I owe it to my coaches. I’m pretty lucky to have a head coach who has gone off to play DIV 1 in the NCAA, and also play pro in the CFL. Coaches are surprised to find out that I know zone blocking techniques, and all the calls to go with it. It makes me that more marketable.”

Erick has taken the year off from basketball to focus his off season training at T2 Training Systems at The Gym. “Training all summer gave him such a huge advantage with power and strength, coming into this season. This year he lined up on the ball with great confidence. Combine that with solid fundamentals and great technique, and that makes for a very overwhelming figure for the opposition” said Rocca.

Erick will look to add a few more camps over the summer to further increase his stock. Some coaches have commented that Erick could be one of the top recruits coming out of highschool, period. When asked about the amount of schools contacting the well natured Lizard, Rocca replied with a grin, “This is just the beginning for this kid.”

Pius XII Celebrates Jesus’ Presence in Our Lives

Today Pius XII students participated in a celebration of the Eucharist with Father Remi from Holy Redeemer Parish. Father Remi highlighted the importance and value of salt and the healing power of light to the students. Both the salt and light are symbolic of Jesus Christ’s presence in our lives as Catholics. We are blessed as a staff and student body to have Father Remi come celebrate the Eucharist with us in our school.”

Junior Math Night at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School

This past month, St. Paul the Apostle School hosted a junior math night for parents and their children in our junior grades. Krista Sarmatiuk and Connie Ubriaco from Academic Services joined our teachers to lead a very successful Math night. Students demonstrated the ir knowledge in solving math problems and parents got to learn about manipulatives, gallery walks and neat ways to solve multiplication problems. At the end of the evening parents were commenting on how much they enjoyed and appreciated seeing just what a math class now looks like.
