In November 2006, students from Greater Sudbury elementary and secondary schools were invited to participate in the my!sudbury / oui!sudbury campaign contest and share their pride for the community.

“Through this contest it became evident that the youth of Greater Sudbury have a tremendous sense of pride for their community,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor John Rodriguez. “Many essay entries and pictures depicted our beautiful landscapes, attractions, schools and friendly neighbourhoods. These youth truly feel that ‘my!sudbury’ is their own.”

my!sudbury oui ! sudbury is more then a slogan – it is a campaign that gives all members of the community the pride to act as ambassadors for Greater Sudbury. The campaign assists in building a foundation for community cohesiveness in order to attract business investment, recruit and retain professionals, promote tourism and encourage internal investment.

SCDSB Hosts Kindergarten Information Night, Powering Young Minds Through Play

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board welcomed prospective kindergarten parents and guardians to its second annual Kindergarten Information Night held at Marymount Academy. The purpose of the evening was to inform and enlighten parents regarding the Board’s kindergarten program and allow them to gain an understanding of the Catholic system which integrates faith and culture.

Sudbury Catholic District School Board Trustees, Senior Administration as well as school principals, vice-principals, kindergarten teachers and members of the Academic Services staff were also on hand to discuss the different supports that the Board has to offer, including community partnerships that enhance and support its programs.

Lucie Cullen, Academic Superintendent of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board invited parents to visit many of the school and special interest group displays and kiosks and to personally connect with staff and agencies that were located on site throughout the evening. “Kindergarten is a bridge between early childhood development and the compulsory school system,” stated Cullen in her address to parents. “Classrooms of young children function as caring communities and are in effect, extensions of the home. The Sudbury Catholic District School Board offers students that same positive nurturing environment. As well as meeting the physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs we also have an added dimension and that is spirituality. We are there to nurture the faith of our early learners,” concluded Cullen.

New in this year’s presentation to the audience was the unveiling of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s state of the art eMac computers designed specifically for the kindergarten program. The eMac computers are now being introduced into the classrooms as a technological tool to promote literacy and numeracy and to enhance student learning.

St. Albert Students Intent on Making the Match to Mining

Students from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s St. Albert Adult Learning Centre had the opportunity to take in a “Making the Match to Mining” forum at the Council Chambers in Tom Davies Square in mid-January. The City of Greater Sudbury Community Development department in conjunction with the Economic Development Corporation hosted this information session to allow representatives from 6 different mining companies the opportunity to speak about entry level mining positions within their companies.

The focus of the mining presentations centred on several common themes such as; “Do these types of positions really exist, if they do, what skills are they looking for, what type of previous work experience would enable someone to confidently approach their company for an entry level position? What skills or experience would they advise someone to acquire so that they could be considered for entry level employment?”

The intent of the forum was to enlighten potential miners/students and surface workers on the proper qualifications for employment in the mining sector and to afford them the opportunity to learn what skills and education they need to acquire prior to being considered for hire.
