St. Charles College Presents “The Wedding Singer”

The S.C.C. Drama department is hard at work on this year’s musical “The Wedding Singer. It originally made its debut on Broadway in 2006, and was nominated for several Tony awards. Based on the film starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, the show features a rock score that will bring you right back to the 80’s. “The Wedding Singer” tells the story of Robbie Hart trying so hard to find love when it’s “right in front of his eyes”. The cast of 24 is creating a show that will definitely make you tap your feet to the beats and go right back to the 80’s! Audience members of all ages are welcome!
The play runs from May 11 – 15 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for seniors; children 5 and under free.

SCDSB Band “Heroes” Rocks Tom Davies Square

SCDSB rock bank Heroes was invited to kick off Children’s Mental Health Week (May 2 – May 9, 2010) at Tom Davies Square on May 3, 2010. The band members are comprised of students from Pius XII and St. Charles College and are under the direction of Pius XII Principal Luisa Bianchin and produced by Derek Zaher (educational assistant at Pius XII). The theme of Children’s Mental Health Week this year is “Bouncing Back” and Mayor John Rodriguez opened the event with a proclamation ceremony. Immediately following this, Cassandra Bazinet – lead vocalist of the band performed the opening song with Liza Rizzardi, a grade 2 student from Corpus Christi Catholic Elementary School and finished to a standing ovation. The band then performed a set of 8 songs that had the crowd clapping and moving to the music. Heroes will be the opening band for the SCDSB board wide Faith Day on May 27 and the students are quite excited for this huge event. “Today was good practice for the band to get ready for the Faith day.” said Principal Louisa Bianchin. “The band has been working so hard – usually three times a week and they are quite excited as the board wide Faith Day will be an amazing opportunity to perform in front of thousands of people!”

St. Mary Students Make the Most of Earth Day

St. Mary Catholic School students celebrated Earth Day by cleaning debris and picking up garbage along Lakeshore Street in Capreol..They filled 39 bags, some pieces of wood, collected several discarded large items and even found a bicycle! The Vermillion River area by the beach looks so much cleaner. Even the Canada geese came for a visit and honked their appreciation. Upon their return to school students created chalk Earth Day messages in the school yard.

St. Christopher Student’s Poem Advances to Provincial Finals

On April 22nd, St. Christopher School was very proud to celebrate Demerice Smith’s (Gr. 4) writing talents. As a part of the OECTA Young Authors Awards, Demerice’s poem, If I Were A Painting, claimed top honours at the city and unit levels. As a result, Demerice was presented with a certificate of accomplishment and her poem will advance to the provincial finals. Winners will be announced in early June. A big thank you to Mrs. DiGioseffo for co-ordinating the in-school event.

SCDSB Students are “Spellbound” at C.P.C.O. Spelling Bee

Elementary students from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board spelled their way to the Championship at the Catholic Principals’ Council of Ontario ( C.P.C.O. -Sudbury Chapter) Spelling Bee on April 21, 2010. Every two years, the C.P.C.O. sponsors this event and the Sudbury Catholic students have the opportunity to compete for the title of Spelling Bee Champion. In order to qualify for this event, each school participated in their own spelling bees and a semi-final competition was held in early April. The students that placed in the top three then qualified to compete in the final event. At the end of the night, the students that claimed the title of top spellers were Kaedan Cronk (Grade 7, St. Paul Catholic Elementary School) for the Intermediate Division and Kamilla Kowal (Grade 6, St. Michael Catholic Elementary School) for the Junior Division.
