Two Sudbury Catholic District School Board students are bringing home gold medals in the 2021 Skills Ontario Competition! Veronica Zulich, student at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, achieved gold in the category of cooking while Isaac Chandler, student at Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School, achieved gold in CNC Woodworking. Both students are enrolled in Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs at their schools (Hospitality/Tourism and Green Industries, respectively). The Skills Ontario Competition is Canada’s largest skilled trades competition, and traditionally hosts over 2,400 students each May in Etobicoke. This year, the competition took place virtually. A total of seven Sudbury Catholic students competed in the event either presenting live or by submitting their projects to a panel of judges.

We would like to acknowledge teacher mentors Kirk McKee, Mike Sipos and Christina Thompson, as well as community partner Mark Gregorini (Verdicchio Ristorante), for continually supporting our students in exploring and pursuing careers in the Skilled Trades. We would also like to thank and acknowledge Cambrian College for their continued partnership and support,” said Peter Prochilo, Superintendent of School Effectiveness for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.

Through our partnership with Skills Ontario, we value the hands-on learning opportunities focused on skilled trades, pathways and career building that we are able to provide our students. We are also grateful to our educators and community partners for their dedication and mentorship to our students. Congratulations to all Sudbury Catholic students who participated and especially to Veronica and Isaac for their gold medal placements. We wish Veronica good luck on her next stage of competition; we know you will represent Sudbury Catholic with pride!”
Veronica Zulich will compete in the Skills Canada National Competition on May 28th which will also be held virtually.
13 projects from Sudbury Catholic Schools will advance to the Virtual 2021 Regional Science Fair. The Sudbury Catholic District School Board held a board wide virtual science fair where projects were judged and scored. Project topics included ‘What foods produce the most biogas”, “The Best Acoustical Set-Up” and “Sturdy Guard – Creating a More Secure Skate Guard.”
The top three Board Science Fair projects are as follows:
• Third Place: Mary Leigh (Marymount Academy) – The Best Acoustical Set-Up
• Second Place: Malachi Slack (Remote Learning School) – Dans Quelle Mesure les Désinfectants Fonctionnent-ils?
• First Place/Best in Fair: Cameron O’Daiskey (St. Anne School) – Snuffed Out
“Each year, our students present unique and creative science fair projects, and this year was certainly no exception. Though this year’s science fair looked a bit different, students were able to participate by showcasing their projects, experiments and visual evidence in an online forum,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “We thank our judges as well as our educators for guiding students and continually finding new opportunities for hands-on learning and growth. We wish participating students good luck in the Virtual 2021 Regional Science Fair!”

To help support students and encourage to make healthy and safe choices, St. Charles School has created the ‘Caught Being Safe’ campaign. Classes received tickets if they were caught wearing their masks safely and properly, being socially distanced inside or out in the school yard, and going above and beyond to keep the school safe. Classes are able to submit their tickets for a chance to win a pizza party.
The school hopes to continue the campaign throughout the year to celebrate student achievements!
Mr. McKee and the students in the Open Doors program created a wooden plaque to represent the Board – displaying our mission, vision, values and our logo. The students, in particular Elliot Hamilton, Shelby Dupuis and Isaac Chandler crafted the plaque and presented it to Superintendent of School Effectiveness Peter Prochilo and Director of Education Joanne Bénard.
The wooden plaque is proudly displayed at the Catholic Education Centre in the main foyer. Thanks to our students for their hard work and creativity – we wish them continued success in the program!
The leadership class organized a wonderful day to honor their fellow student Sebastien Parent. He is the Easter Seals Ambassador this year and they wanted to organize something special!
Michael Cullen (Sudbury 5), Joanne Bowers (Easter Seals), Mr. Mousseau (basketball coach) and Valentina Del Re ( Leadership teacher) worked together to make this fun day happen. “It’s great for school spirit, and teaches the students the value of giving back to the community”, said Mousseau. The boys and girls basketball teams played against the staff in front of a full gym of screaming gators.
Special shout-out to the cheerleading group who were awesome,Trenton our DJ, and Jackie the Sudbury 5 DJ who truly stole the show! Great times where had by all and the school raised $1025 for Easter Seals.
On Wednesday, February 26th, Student Senate members from all four Sudbury Catholic secondary schools helped wait tables at Tony V’s restaurant to raise funds in support of Australian bushfire relief. In addition to cash donations, a percentage of proceeds from meal purchases will be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Bushfire Appeal to provide food, clothing, and essentials, and recovery support to individuals and families in need. The students raised a total of $1220 ($500 from the restaurant and $720 in cash donations). Thank you to Tony V’s for supporting this fundraiser event!
St. Albert Learning Centre graduated their latest Personal Support Worker (PSW) class.
Being a PSW isn’t easy. PSWs face long hours, physically and emotionally demanding work.Being a PSW means you can make a real difference in someone’s life. You do what doctors, nurses, and sometimes even family can’t do: spend meaningful time with people. PSWs are the difference makers, the front-line workers, the glue of the health care world.
Congratulations to our latest batch of PSWs- may you find success in your future endeavours!
St. Charles College student, Teresa Aiello was recently recognized by the Learning Disabilities Association of Sudbury, receiving the Outstanding Student award for 2019.
Teresa is the perfect student to receive an acknowledgement by the Learning Disability Association this school year. She has been involved in the LDAS coaching program for five years. She has also been an LDAS Youth Ambassador for the past three years making her a voice for others who live with learning disabilities.
Aiello is seventeen years old now. She attends St. Charles College and is in her graduating year. She is consistently achieving marks in the 80 and 90 range.
Jodi Cunningham is a teacher who has spent several years watching Aiello in her role as a teacher. She believes that Aeillo is an excellent candidate for this award, as she uses her strengths to develop strategies that overcome the challenges of her learning disability.
