Longtime Sudbury Catholic District School Board Teacher Honoured at Annual Banquet

Chris Bartolucci, a thirty year teacher with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board was presented with the SCDSB Chairperson’s Award by Board Chair, Paula Peroni at SCDSB’s annual 25 Year and Retirement Banquet held at Bryston’s On The Park.

Mr. Bartolucci has been involved with St. Charles College, as a student from 1969 to 1973, and as a teacher/program coordinator from 1976 to present day. He received the prestigious award for his many years of service and dedication to both students and staff and for his long term commitment as a football, basketball and alpine skiing coach at St. Charles College.

“Chris Bartolucci has devoted his entire teaching career to educating and coaching students in an effort to make them better students and athletes,” stated Paula Peroni in the Board’s tribute to Bartolucci. “He is known by his present and former students as a great motivator who has inspired them to go on to careers in law, business, sociology, anthropology, religion and numerous other professions,” concluded Peroni

Effective May 1, Chris Bartolucci has taken on a new role in the football community as the Head Coach of the Sudbury Spartans Football Team. Over the years, whether on the field or off he has been an excellent role model for both students and staff, demonstrating a high degree of professionalism in both the teaching and coaching professions.

SCC Student Leaves His Mark at St. Charles College, Staff Pitches In

The St. Charles College football changeroom has gone through a major renovation. Matt Dumont, a Cards football player since 2002 came up with the idea of building individual lockers for the players in the football changeroom. He began designing the lockers with the help of the woodworking teacher, Mr. Baxter, in November 2005. Their design called for 43 individual booths.

Construction began in February 2006. Matt spent many hours of his own time on this project. Matt has truly left a legacy to his school. In his honour, a permanent plaque commemorating his efforts was installed in the changeroom. Many future Cardinal football players will now enjoy the luxury of sitting in their own personal booths in the locker area.

In addition to Matt’s contributions, special thanks also goes to the following; the Sudbury Catholic District School Board Maintenance Department, St. Charles College Custodial Staff (especially Mr. Louis Chretien and Mr. Rick Boudreau), Mr. L. Baxter, James Rand-student, Mrs. Dagostino (Athletic Director), Mrs. Mardero (Principal) and to the Friends of St. Charles College Football for their continued financial support. A very special thank you goes to Head Coach, Mike Fabiilli for his continuous commitment to the SCC Football program.

The Cards are now starting to prepare for their upcoming season in hope of capturing its 20th Senior Football championship. Go Cards, Go!

CPCO Spelling Bee a Huge Success

In the Sudbury Symphony INCO Search for Excellence Competition, hosted by the
Music Festival, Damien Lafromboise and Aimee Leonard received a $500 award each
and will perform with the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra in February 2007.

St. Charles College Alumnus ~ Damien Laframboise – Piano Concerto
Damien will perform with the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra in February 2007. He
will also receive a $500 award from INCO for his performance. Damien is presently
attending Laurentian University studying music.

Marymount Academy Student Nominated for 2006 Ontera Youth Achievement Awards

Alexandra Hickey, a Grade 12 student at Marymount Academy is a nominee in this year’s Ontera Youth Achievement Awards Ceremony that will take place on April 20, 2006 at the Radisson Hotel in Sudbury. Alexandra has been nominated in the ‘Student of the Year’ category.

Osprey Media Group has once again partnered with Ontera to host the second annual Northern Ontario Youth Program which includes the Osprey Youth Development Workshops and the Ontera Youth Achievement Awards. The Osprey Youth Development Workshop is a forum for ideas and actions needed to create opportunities for youth. This year’s topic is Education as a youth retention strategy: How can Northern Ontario secondary schools, colleges, universities, students and industry work together to adapt the school curriculum to meet today’s demands.

The Ontera Youth Achievement Awards recognize, celebrate and honour youth who demonstrate innovation, leadership, altruism and community building in the North. “We’re proud to present the Ontera Youth Achievement Awards,” said Ontera president and general manager Marc Rancourt at the media launch for the 2006 Northern Ontario Youth Program held at Tom Davies Square. “We heard many inspiring stories last year and that only strengthened our resolve to spotlight the young talent that abounds in the North. These awards are a symbol of our company’s dedication to building the new North.”

Alexandra was nominated for the Student of the Year Category in this year’s Ontera Youth Achievement Awards by Mr. Dan Bartolucci, one of her teachers at Marymount Academy. “Alexandra’s work ethic within the school community – both inside and outside of the classroom is outstanding,” states Bartolucci.”For a young lady who is already very active outside of the school, she is constantly seeking opportunities to get involved with school activities, and always welcomes the opportunity to be in a leadership role. Alexandra challenges herself and those around her to achieve their absolute best and it is this enthusiasm and initiative that deserves recognition. I have watched Alexandra mature both personally and academically over the past five years and there is no doubt in my mind that she will accomplish all of her future goals.”

Congratulations to Marymount Academy’s Music Program for Another Banner Year!

Marymount Academy’s music program has experienced another tremendously successful year at the Kiwanis Festival and the Northern Ontario Music Festivals with both the Junior and Senior Concert Bands and the String Ensemble receiving Gold Awards.

Gold Awards were also earned by Andrea Mikkila, Terri Scherzinger and Kristin Hamill for a flute trio; Karly Schofield, Katie Runions, Jennifer Innes and Samantha McIlveen for a flute quartet; Mary Jebreen, Rebecca James and Kaitlynd Burns for a Trombone Trio; Marla Parker, Allison Bruneau, Cassandra Chapman, Christy Pitt and Jessica Sigurdson for a Clarinet Quintet.

The String Ensemble and the Clarinet Quintet performed at the Kiwanis Festival Highlights Concert on March 25 at which time scholarships were awarded to members of the Senior Concert Band and the String Ensemble.

The Senior Concert Band has also been invited to compete in the Provincial Kiwanis Competition later this year.

Gold awards were also given to Marla Haring, Tilly Lanteigne and Marla Parker who competed in Solo Concerto classes

The Senior Concert Band performed at the Northern Ontario Music Festival In March 2006. This prestigious festival features more than seventy ensembles from all of Northern Ontario. The Marymount Senior Band was clearly working at a different level than everyone else.

A Gold Award, an invitation to compete at the National level and an overwhelming complimentary adjudication were issued to the Marymount band. In addition, Marymount placed 11 band members on the All Star band. All Stars include Colleen Keaney, Karly Scholfield, Marla Parker, Allison Bruneau, Marla Haring, Sofia Panchaud, Kelsey Gunn, Marissa Sikora, Samantha McIlveen and Megan Landry.
